tries to cover too much 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book has some good information, but it tries to cover too much. It covers web services created in .NET, Java, and even Perl. Most of the book is related to .NET though.

It is funny that in the intro the authors say they assume you already know XML, but then the first chapter is an intro to XML. Actually, that's one of the reasons I bought the book though. I didn't want to buy a separate XML book.

The other reason I bought the book is that it was on the bargain rack. I wouldn't have paid full price since I am not interested in .NET.

Editorial Review:

XML in Data Management is for IT managers and technical staff involved in the creation, administration, or maintenance of a data management infrastructure that includes XML. For most IT staff, XML is either just a buzzword that is ignored or a silver bullet to be used in every nook and cranny of their organization. The truth is in between the two. This book provides the guidance necessary for data managers to make measured decisions about XML within their organizations. Readers will understand the uses of XML, its component architecture, its strategic implications, and how these apply to data management.

Okay book, but are you using all these languages? 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is okay, but is your development team really using all these languages? If you need to learn XML with a certain technology, get Professional PHP4 XML or Manning's new Java and XML book and many others. Not only do these books cover the same material as this one, they cover some really advanced topics such as architecture and design issues as well as giving you heads up on the latest versions such as php 4.3.0. This book also doesn't nearly tell you about all the potential problems that you can have with working with PHP where Professional PHP4 XML will answer just about every question you ever had plus everything else you didn't think of.

Editorial Review:

XML is the leading standard for enabling business-to-business e-commerce, as well as any application that needs to communicate across different platforms. This book focuses on the application of XML when using scripting languages, because these languages make it easier to quickly build Web applications. Two of the most popular open-source languages are covered - Perl and Python - but there are chapters on PHP and several upstart languages, including Ruby and Rebol. The book gives coverage of the core XML processing issues, including the basics of parsing XML documents, converting XML to and from different formats (including HTML), and translating objects for use with databases.

Editorial Review:

In Microsoft's Office 2003, users experience the merger of the power of the classic Office suite of applications with the fluidity of data exchange inherent in XML. With XML at its heart, the new version of Microsoft's desktop suite liberates the information stored in millions of documents created with Office software over the past fifteen years, making it available to a wide variety of programs. Office 2003 XML offers an in-depth exploration of the relationship between XML and Office 2003, examining how the various products in the Office suite both produce and consume XML. Developers will learn how they can connect Microsoft Office to others systems, while power users will learn to create and analyze XML documents using familiar Office tools. The book begins with an overview of the XML features included in the various Office 2003 components, and explores in detail how Word, Excel, and Access interact with XML. This book covers both the user interface side, creating interfaces so that users can comfortably (and even unknowingly) work with XML, and the back end, exposing Office information to other processes. It also looks at Microsoft's new InfoPath application and how it fits with the rest of Office. Finally, the book's appendices introduce various XML technologies that may be useful in working with Office, including XSLT, W3C XML Schema, RELAX NG, and SOAP. Office 2003 XML provides quick and clear guidance to a anyone who needs to import or export information from Office documents into other systems. Both XML programmers and Office power will learn how to get the most from this powerful new intersection between Office 2003 and XML.

Editorial Review:

Java has evolved into a robust, high performance programming language that is well suited to a range of different environments, be it on a middle tier Application Server or a client browser. Regardless of the architecture of your application you are using, it will almost certainly need to make use of data that is stored in some form of database. Relational databases are the data store of choice in the vast majority of businesses, and have also evolved enormously over the recent years, into powerful and feature-rich data management systems.

This book aims to teach you how to use these two powerful technologies to build successful Java database applications. You will find out how relational databases work and how you can use them in your Java programs, through the JDBC interface. You will see how to apply your new skills in an enterprise environment and by the end will be building sophisticated web-enabled Java database applications that incorporate other technologies, such as XML.

This book covers:

Using the JDBC API to build database-driven Java applications
Introduction to new JDBC 3.0 features
SQL and relational database design
Object-relational mapping frameworks and techniques
Debugging your application and logging its activities
Applying Java and JDBC skills in a J2EE environment
Integrating XML into you Java database applications

A good HTML 4 reference, written well 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is a thick book. But never misunderstand the fact that no matter how many pages are included in a computer reference, there will always be information missing for the most advanced user. HTML 4 is covered in-depth -- and should be the primary reason for wanting to purchase this title, for I have not found a better reference on the subject anywhere. Java 1.2 and XML receive good general overviews. A review previous to mine suggests other, more comprehensive titles, if one wants to delve into the world of Java and XML fully. An excellent suggestion and something that should be taken into account before buying.

Regarding "Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2," it should be noted that for first-time site developers that are looking for an introduction to HTML 4, this is probably not the best way to go. The basics of Web development, such as the best placement for links, graphics, and text, are summarized in the first fifty pages. (First-timers should look for Web development books that cover both HTML 4 and graphic design well.) Following, is a reference-style book that comes in very handy when looking for specific information (that this book covers). I would say, and I think that I share the sentiment of other readers, that this book is geared toward the intermediate to advanced site developer.

Several more aspects worth noting: The style of writing is clear and straightforward, with few grammatical mistakes; there are plenty of examples (code and screen) with good descriptions of why something works; and I would've preferred that the screen shots be in color, but that would probably double the price.

This is a good reference book for HTML 4, that includes an overview of XML and Java. It's not everything, but it's excellent nonetheless.

Editorial Review:

Web developers must master several technologies to create sophisticated Web sites. Platinum Edition Using HTML 4, XML, and Java 1.2 gives Web developers this information in a concise tutorial/reference style that contains lots of code examples and real world solutions. This book not only teaches the most popular technologies, but shows Web developers how to build the most popular Web applications, including animation, interactive forms, Web databases, e-commerce, and Web broadcasting.

Not worth the time, not worth the money 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book based on the 4.5 stars that the original reviews had given it. It must have the author's friends. None of the examples work and could never work no matter what platform. It is obvious that the author never actually worked through these issues although it looks good enough that it faked me out. Examples: he uses virtual base classes as if they were implementation classes (DOMImplementation class), he uses methods that dont exist (System.out.null()), he fails to declare or instantiate items that he uses in the examples, ..., ..., ... It took me a month to work my own way through the 2nd chapter. Not worth the time, not worth the money.

Editorial Review:

This title provides a comprehensive reference/tutorial for Java programmers who want to tap the synergy of XML and Java in key Web development tasks.

The Java, XML, and Web Services Bible serves as a reference/tutorial for a variety of XML and Java related topics. It covers areas such as B2B, Instant Messaging, Java and XML Binding, Scalable Vector Graphics, and Application development with XML and JSP. It discusses some commercial and open technologies used with Java and XML such as Cocoon, Batik, and Xerces.

Editorial Review:

This book will be for XQuery what The Java Programming Language is for Java: a complete description of the language, suitable for both beginners and experts. This book is what you need to understand the basic design goals of XQuery and its application in real-world development. It provides solid coverage of XQuery, and is appropriate as a tutorial and a reference. The W3C specification is dense, poorly written, very formal and abstract, and does not contain many examples--exactly what you'd expect from a formal specification. Consequently, developers are starving for information about and examples of XQuery. Because the formal specifications are most people's only source of information about the standards, and because they are so difficult to absorb and internalize, other developers and programmers are at a distinct disadvantage. Anyone who wants to know what a particular XQuery expression is supposed to do, or how to accomplish a particular task using XQuery, will turn to this book. Its many examples make it very accessible.

tons of exercises 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book provides tons of "StepByStep" exercises to learn all about remoting, web services, etc. It's a great book for those that do not hae tons of experience in these areas. In the same token, it maybe too much coding for the experience developer who is looking to gain just the facts to pass the test. If someone is looking for that, then look at the MS Press book.

The one real complaint that I have is with the layout of the book. There is a lot of line wrapping which isn't really necessary, they could use the width of the page. But, this is the fault of the publisher, not the author.

Overall, another great book by Mike!

Editorial Review:

This certification exam measures your ability to develop and implement middle-tier components, server components, and XML Web services by using Visual Studio .NET and the Microsoft .NET Framework. This exam counts as a core credit toward the new MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) certification as well as a core credit toward the new MCSD .NET track.

The Training Guide series is the most successful self-study tool in the market. Its teaching methodology is superior. The accompanying CD features PrepLogic testing software, which includes one complete PrepLogic Practice Test with approximately the same number of questions found on the actual vendor exam. Each question contains full, detailed explanations of the correct and incorrect answers.
