Editorial Review:

Forget those funky robot toys that were all the rage in the '80s, XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Transformations) is the ultimate transformer. This powerful language is expert at transforming XML documents into PDF files, HTML documents, JPEG files--virtually anything your heart desires. As useful as XSLT is, though, most people have a difficult time learning its many peculiarities. And now Version 2.0, while elegant and powerful, has only added to the confusion.

XSLT Cookbook, Second Edition wants to set the record straight. It helps you sharpen your programming skills and overall understanding of XSLT through a collection of detailed recipes. Each recipe breaks down a specific problem into manageable chunks, giving you an easy-to-grasp roadmap for integrating XSLT with your data and applications. No other XSLT book around employs this practical problem-solution-discussion format.

In addition to offering code recipes for solving everyday problems with XSLT 1.0, this new edition shows you how to leverage the improvements found in XSLT 2.0, such as how to simplify the string manipulation and date/time conversion processes. The book also covers XPath 2.0, a critical companion standard, as well as topics ranging from basic transformations to complex sorting and linking. It even explores extension functions on a variety of different XSLT processors and shows ways to combine multiple documents using XSLT. Code examples add a real-world dimension to each technique.

Whether you're just starting out in XSLT or looking for advanced techniques, you'll find the level of information you need in XSLT Cookbook, Second Edition.

Editorial Review:

Web Services is the latest trend to hit the software industry. It promises to promote interoperability among disparate applications; i.e., applications written in different languages and running on diverse platforms. This book covers Web services protocols SOAP, WSDL, UDDI and the J2EE APIs that are used with these protocols including: JAX-RPC, JAXM, JWSDL, and JAXR. The author explains in detail how to use these Java APIs with the J2EE platform and also provides detailed information on security issues and interoperability between J2EE platforms and .NET. The book also includes a primer on XML, XSD and JAXP (the Java XML API), which is necessary basis for understanding how to process SOAP messages.

Editorial Review:

As a developer new to Web Services, how do you make sense of this emerging framework so you can start writing your own services today? This concise book gives programmers both a concrete introduction and a handy reference to XML Web Services, first by explaining the foundations of this new breed of distributed services, and then by demonstrating quick ways to create services with open-source Java tools. The book explores four key emerging Web Services technologies:
XML Remote Procedure Calls (XML-RPC)SOAP - The foundation for most commercial Web Services developmentUniversal Discovery, Description and Integration (UDDI)Web Services Description Language (WSDL)
For each of these topics, Web Services Essentials provides a quick overview, Java tutorials with sample code, samples of the XML documents underlying the service, and explanations of freely-available Java APIs. The book also includes a guide to the current state of Web Services, pointers to open-source tools and a comprehensive glossary of terms. If you want to break through the Web Services hype and find useful information on these evolving technologies, look no further than Web Services Essentials.

These reviews are all very misleading as they refer to a previous edition of the book which is no longer available, the third edition of XML For Dummies. XML For Dummies, 4th edition, the book featured here, addresses many of the concerns raised in the reviews of the third edition.

For real dummies 1 out of 5 stars.

Great for beginners 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As the suffix title suggests, this book _does_not_rush_ things; very obviously catered for novice developers, it slowly oozes out information a step at a time. The authors exhibit their virtuous patience by going into great lengths to introduce the technology concepts that support XML web services, complete with comprehensive diagrams. These base explanations facilitate a firmer foundational understanding that no developer of XML web services should do without.

Accompanying this conceptual theory are practical-driven chapters, each demonstrating a facet of web service development in the .NET Framework and Visual Studio .NET. The instructions are so minutely explicit and clear, virtually taking the reader by the hand (so much so might annoy more seasoned developers), that building the examples listed are exceedingly easy tasks. And I do not mean that in a blind copy-and-paste manner; the baby steps are enriched with proper explanations to ensure readers have sufficient knowledge of why such a piece of code exists somewhere. Even the asynchronous and multi-threading chapter, a topic that most developers tend not to have a good grip on, is written with amazing clarity. The book's 16 chapters are incredibly easy to read and digest, possessing little (if not none) of that confusing wordy fluff that delivers nothing; this one goes straight to the point, short and sweet.

Sometimes however, short can also mean _truncated_. There are places where it simply stops and closes shop on the chapter when more demonstrations are expected. Take for example the fifth chapter, where it is supposed to show using web services with HTTP requests along (without SOAP). It explains alot about HTTP-GET and HTTP-POST, but only walks through a HTTP-GET practical. I felt omitting HTTP-POST would not fair well in the light of educating novices.

While on the flow of novice practices, it also strangely presents a mix of good and legacy (not necessarily bad) examples. The use of the StringBuilder class to append strings together is a good one, but continuing to code with "" and string.ToLower() show an affinity to past platforms. string.Empty and CaseInsensitiveComparer are respectively preferred choices in the .NET Framework practice.

Almost needless to state, even with the "Advanced" part of the book, one should not be expecting any serious deep topics or design patterns revolving web services here. But I couldn't help but feel it waste for such fantastic writing style not delivering something more that is usually arcane in other books. Who should be blamed for desiring more out of a delicious meal?

Great book to get developers started and up to speed with XML web services. But those looking to become _masters_ should read something else.

Good: Crystal clear explanations; easy following; great beginner material
Bad: Little to offer beyond the beginner; odd omissions; few legacy practices

Editorial Review:

Teach yourself how to write and deploy XML Web services for Microsoft .NET-one step at a time. XML Web services can vastly simplify application integration and interoperability, but developing them requires an understanding of many different programming techniques and technologies. This step-by-step tutorial delivers expert, task-based instruction designed to help you apply what you already know about C#, Microsoft Visual Basic, and other object-oriented programming (OOP) languages to XML Web services development-at the pace that best suits you. Topics include XML Web services architecture; writing, testing, and debugging Web services; and consuming Web services asynchronously through clients or with HTTP; and advanced topics such as managing Web service state, security, SOAP, and .NET remoting. The book features skill-building lessons and practice exercises, with plenty of examples in both the C# and Visual Basic .NET languages.

Good crash course 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I knew nothing about XML and needed to come up to speed quickly. This book served that purpose well. It starts with basic theoretical explanations and goes into some technical detail. It did not teach me "everything" I needed to know, but it did a good job of getting me started. I would recommend it for a novice with little to advanced technical background who needs to learn XML.

Already out of date 2 out of 5 stars.

XML is changing at a lightning fast pace, and this 2000 book is already out of date.

A concise and useful set of exercises 4 out of 5 stars.

A great introduction to XML.
The example programs and tutorials cover a breadth of topics. The sections are related and continue to build on useful tools and suggested practices.
I would recommend the book to anyone new to XML that wants to rip through some examples and would like to know about dtd and xlst.

Editorial Review:

XML Weekend Crash Course covers the ins and outs of XML in 30 sessions. Each session is designed to take 30 minutes to complete, so the Crash Course is an intense 15-hour learning period. You can complete the Crash Course over a single weekend -- but you can also easily adapt the Crash Course sessions to whatever schedule best suits your needs.

Great book for "real-world" XML 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Everybody or most of everybody that are in web design in some form or another have heard about XML or even used it a bit. But personally I feel there are a small amount of resources out there that really teach you how to use XML in "real-world" scenarios. It's nice to know what it is and know that many applications use it behind the scenes, but it still doesn't help people understand how to use it for our own web applications.

This book solves that problem wonderfully by first showing you first what XML is and how to format proper XML documents. Then the author discusses how to publish XML documents in a couple web site examples (web catalog for one) and showing how to style these documents using regular CSS and XSLT, schemas as well as other technologies such as XPath and XQuery.

Each chapter presents a new problem (rendering XML to print, searching and merging documents, integrating web services, RSS feeds) and goes through step by step in how to work it out with really nice code examples. You really don't need to read this book end to end to get the most out of it. Just pick a chapter and read through it since the author re-summarizes what was previously covered to bring you up to speed.

So for example, if you have XML documents that you need to integrate into a database (DB2, SQL Server, etc) or want to learn how to create XML documents from a database table(s) it first shows the necessary SQL to pull the data you need, then how to use various tools to create your format.

The book does use one program (Stylus Studio 2006) in particular but the author mentions other open-source programs that you can use as well (in Appendix too). A great little book (under 300 pages) that shows you some great uses for XML as well as teaching you how and why you should use it.

A great buy!

Editorial Review:

  • Offering a unique approach to learning XML, this book walks readers through the process of building a complete, functional, end-to-end XML solution
  • Featured case study is an online business product catalog that includes reports, data input/output, workflow, stylesheet formatting, RSS feeds, and integration with external services like Google, eBay, and Amazon
  • The format of presenting a problem and working through the design to come up with a solution enables readers to understand how XML markup allows a business to share data across applications internally or with partners or customers even though they might not use the same applications

Errors, Lots and Lots of Errors 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

37 errors are listed on the author's site. I think I found some new ones as well. The material moves from the specific to general, so that the reader must skip around quite a bit. The aforementioned errors make learning XML very tedious and frustrating. An edit should have done - it is apparent none was. I have used Castro's books in the past and have never experienced the problems I have with this one. I recommend against purchasing this book and I hope Peachpit will not repeat the problems encountered within.

Editorial Review:

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is revolutionizing the way people work with the Web. In XML, markup tags are readable by humans and machines, making XML a well-supported way to create, distribute, and present information. Hundreds of thousands of readers learned HTML from Elizabeth Castro with HTML 4 For the World Wide Web: Visual QuickStart Guide. Now, using concise instructions and plenty of screen shots, Elizabeth Castro teaches beginning users all they need to know to write XML codes, XSL, and Cascading Style Sheets, as well as providing the scripts required to generate each piece. For anyone wanting to learn XML and use it to generate dynamic Web sites, Castro's book is an excellent and affordable resource.
