Not for beginners 3 out of 5 stars.

While this may be an excellent reference for experienced Linux users, it will be of very limited use for beginners or those who use Linux through a graphical interface. It is also specifically directed towards Fedora. It would be helpful if your descriptive blurb on the book revealed these two facts.

Editorial Review:

Linux Pocket Guide gets you up to speed quickly on day-to-day Linux use. It's organized the way you use Linux: by function, not just alphabetically. It's not the 'bible of Linux; it's a practical and concise guide to the options and commands you need most. It starts with general concepts like files and directories, the shell, and X windows, and then presents detailed overviews of the most essential commands, with clear examples. You'll learn each command's purpose, usage, options, location on disk, and even the RPM package that installed it. The Linux Pocket Guide is tailored to Fedora Linux--the latest spin-off of Red Hat Linux--but most of the information applies to any Linux system. Throw in a host of valuable power user tips and a friendly and accessible style, and you'll quickly find this practical, to-the-point book a small but mighty resource for Linux users.

Describes a Lot you can do with Outlook 5 out of 5 stars.
28 of 34 people found this review helpful.

Microsoft's Outlook is the hands down most popular package in the world for handling e-mail. The overwhelming percentage of peopel using Outlook use it only for handling e-mail. They ignore that in revision after revision, down through many years Microsoft has expanded the functionality built into the program to becomen what Microsoft calls a Desktop Information Manager. Not only that, but in keeping with Microsoft's traditions, it has kept the Outlook look and feel rather consistent across the range of functions.

Among the standard features built into Outlook 2007 include what you might call a contact management system (and you don't have to pay extra for it). With you can keep a lot of information about your contacts, not just their e-mail addresses. Then there's a calender, scheduling system, sending yourself notes (kind of like those little yellow slips), keeping a journal and lots, lots more.

Like the other For Dummies books, this book uses simple English to explain things and yet covers the subject very completely.

Editorial Review:

  • Most users take advantage of only two percent of Outlook's power; this book shows them how to harness frequently overlooked tricks and techniques that can significantly boost productivity
  • Shows how to manage time and information in the new interface, covering instant searches, the To-Do bar, color categories, and task integration with OneNote, Project, Access, and Windows SharePoint Services
  • Explains how to connect across boundaries with access to WSS data, two-way sync and offline access, calendar sharing, smart scheduling, RSS support, electronic business cards, and the improved out-of-office assistant
  • Demonstrates how to stay safe and in control with the improved spam filter, anti-phishing capabilities, e-mail postmark features, e-mail folder organization, and information rights management

Good in combination with other resources 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The content of this book is very good, but sentence structures are often confusing and vital information is sometimes missing. The quality varies greatly from one chapter to another, however, and some chapters are very well written. In combination with other books, this is a good resource, but on its own it can be frustrating at times.

blissfull 3 out of 5 stars.

Book is a decent introduction to C# although at 1782 pages a bit of a slog. It doesn't cover enough detail to be good reference, however. I find I need to look at online documentation for even some simple issues. I am an experienced programmer, so I know what I want a language to do. What I am interested in is "how do I do what I want to do?". This book has not proven to be good at answering these kind of questions. But in its defense, I have not found other books to be better - even highly recommended ones.

Editorial Review:

Updated for .NET 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008, this book is the ultimate guide to C# 2008 and its environment. Beginning with a look into the architecture and methodology of .NET, the team of superlative authors explains why the C# language must be considered in parallel with the .NET Framework. Completely new chapters on LINQ, SQL, ADO.NET entities, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, Windows Presentation Foundation, arrays, and event logging deliver essential information to help you gain a clear and thorough understanding of all that C# 2008 has to offer.

A nice, basic GIS primer with ArcGIS software included 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I teach an introductory GIS course using this book. I like the simple, informative layout and the exercises that are useful, if a little basic. One of the real values of the book is the inclusion of a trial version of ArcGIS 9.2 with a full gamut of extensions (there is a newer book out with 9.3), as well as exercises that go along with the book.

This in itself is very valuable, because it allows my students to use the state of the art software during the course on their personal computers. Unless you have access to ArcGIS from another source, I would highly recommend purchasing the book new, since the trial software is one-time use only.

Editorial Review:

With revised material and new exercises based on ArcGIS version 9, this updated work acquaints geographers and GIS professionals with the principles of GIS as it teaches the mechanics of using ArcGIS software. Conceptual material is followed by scripted software exercises. Necessary GIS skills are presented in a variety of areas--map symbology, data overlay, map projection, and data conversion--as the making of maps and the analysis of geographic data is conceptualized. Spatial modeling exercises using the Model Builder technology of ArcGIS version 9 are also provided. Other topics covered include organizing data, planning a GIS project, creating derived data, and presenting results.

A tool rather than a toolkit 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book delivers exactly what it says. Except that word "toolkit" in its title - you'd better think about this book being a single tool, not a whole toolkit. Ralph Kimball actually has a whole lot of books on data warehousing published, this is one of them, a tool in the toolkit. This one seems like a good starting point to the entire series, and it only shows a single facet - the dimensional modeling.

The book explains the basic principles of creating dimensions and fact tables in a data warehouse (assuming a relational star schema), and then dedicates a chapter per industry to show how those principles apply to sales, order management, CRM, accounting, human resources, financial services, telecoms, logistics, education, health care, e-commerce, insurance etc. Each one appears to be significantly different from the others.

There is a couple of teaser chapters starting with "we have that other book covering this, but will brief you out". Nice and makes you want to read the other books too.

The book also includes guidelines to the warehouse building process, in terms like "know your business sponsor", "talk to your users" and so on. Difficult to say what it has to do with dimensional modeling, perhaps it's included in all the books in the series.

There is no word on software, hardware, physical architecture, tuning or performance in this book. It is a textbook in dimensional modeling, period.

The book is written clearly, has a handful of simple and uniform diagrams and is easy to follow. It only leaves you wondering just how exactly large is the whole data warehouse area, how many pieces you need to collect yet.

Recommended.

Editorial Review:

Single most authoritative guide from the inventor of the technique.
* Presents unique modeling techniques for e-commerce, and shows strategies for optimizing performance.
* Companion Web site provides updates on dimensional modeling techniques, links related to sites, and source code where appropriate.

Editorial Review:

It has been more than twenty years since desktop publishing reinvented design, and it's clear that there is a growing need for designers and artists to learn programming skills to fill the widening gap between their ideas and the capability of their purchased software. This book is an introduction to the concepts of computer programming within the context of the visual arts. It offers a comprehensive reference and text for Processing (www.processing.org), an open-source programming language that can be used by students, artists, designers, architects, researchers, and anyone who wants to program images, animation, and interactivity.

The ideas in Processing have been tested in classrooms, workshops, and arts institutions, including UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, New York University, and Harvard University. Tutorial units make up the bulk of the book and introduce the syntax and concepts of software (including variables, functions, and object-oriented programming), cover such topics as photography and drawing in relation to software, and feature many short, prototypical example programs with related images and explanations. More advanced professional projects from such domains as animation, performance, and typography are discussed in interviews with their creators. "Extensions" present concise introductions to further areas of investigation, including computer vision, sound, and electronics. Appendixes, references to other material, and a glossary contain additional technical details. Processing can be used by reading each unit in order, or by following each category from the beginning of the book to the end. The Processing software and all of the code presented can be downloaded and run for future exploration.
