Ok for the moderate user 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

As with all these "bible" software books. They are really a handy reference. Particularly for the moderate excel user.

More seasoned users could do just as well with the hundreds of online help areas centered around excel. I picked up this book to help me get over the "ribbon" hurdle with excel; but find I simply use online help rather than cracking open this book.

I give it 3 stars b.c it does what it professes to do.

excellent reference for beginners and those needing a refresher 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book is concise and has many of the key ideas that beginning SAS programmers need. It is a good reference even for advanced SAS programmers but does not go far beyond the basics. If you use SAS regularly this will not have enough information for you. However, it is the quickest way to find out how to do something basic that you either have never done or forgot how to do. I only have the 2nd edition, so I can't comment on any changes that may be incorporated in the third edition.

Editorial Review:

Getting started with SAS is easy with The Little SAS Book. This friendly, easy-to-read guide gently introduces you to the most commonly used features of SAS software plus a whole lot more! The book has been revised to include concepts of the Output Delivery System; the STYLE= option in the PRINT, REPORT, and TABULATE procedures; ODS HTML, RTF, PRINTER, and OUTPUT destinations; PROC REPORT; more on PROC TABULATE; exporting data; and the colon modifier for informats. You'll find clear and concise explanations of basic SAS concepts (such as DATA and PROC steps), inputting data, modifying and combining data sets, summarizing and presenting data, basic statistical procedures, and debugging SAS programs. Each topic is presented in a self-contained, two-page layout complete with examples and graphics. This format enables new users to get up and running quickly, while the examples allow you to type in the program and see it work!

Great Study Guide 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I purchased Andy's book as well as the PMBOK in June, 2008 to study for my PMP exam in July, 2008. The book delivered on its title, since I was able to pass on the 1st try. This book does an excellent job of laying out exactly what to expect on the exam. PM can be a "dry" subject, but I felt that this book did a good job of presenting the material in a logical manner that made it easier to understand. Other reviewers suggest purchasing this book and the PMBOK together as a package and I agree. With both, I don't think you will have much trouble prepping for the exam. I was able to get through the book several times and used the PMBOK to shore up the presented subjects as needed. The language used in this book was clear, concise and presented in a welcoming manner. One negative is that there isn't a large question bank to accompany this book. If you are looking to get a lot of practice questions, I would add an additional reference to your purchace. I would have liked to have more practice questions, but I chose to review every question in the book and the practice exam and felt confortable taking the actual exam. Overall, I would absolutely recommend this book and the strategy above as a means to get your PMP credential.

Editorial Review:

This self-study guide for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam from the Project Management Institute contains everything project managers need to pass the PMP Exam, including 44 processes, and 592 inputs, tools, and outputs. Why are people still buying this book? 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I give this book a 3 because it was great when it was written. But now, it is not a very good book to read. Most people who read it acknowledge they can't understand it. There are two excellent books on the market that should be read if you want to learn design patterns.

Head First Design Patterns (Head First) - is the best book to read on what patterns are as solutions to a problem in a context. Fun to read, useful, really wonderful *****.

However, if you want to learn what patterns really are - the thought process behind them, read Design Patterns Explained: A New Perspective on Object-Oriented Design (2nd Edition) (Software Patterns Series) *****

A related book that would also be a good read is Scott Bain's Emergent Design: The Evolutionary Nature of Professional Software Development (Net Objectives Product Development Series) *****

Let's give tribute to the acknowledged #1 classic in the modern software industry. But it is not the book to read to learn patterns anymore.

Editorial Review:

Four top-notch authors present the first book containing a catalog of object-oriented design patterns. Readers will learn how to use design patterns in the object-oriented development process, how to solve specific design problems using patterns, and gain a common vocabulary for object-oriented design.

Editorial Review:

The updated new edition of the classic Introduction to Algorithms is intended primarily for use in undergraduate or graduate courses in algorithms or data structures. Like the first edition, this text can also be used for self-study by technical professionals since it discusses engineering issues in algorithm design as well as the mathematical aspects.

In its new edition, Introduction to Algorithms continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to the modern study of algorithms. The revision has been updated to reflect changes in the years since the book's original publication. New chapters on the role of algorithms in computing and on probabilistic analysis and randomized algorithms have been included. Sections throughout the book have been rewritten for increased clarity, and material has been added wherever a fuller explanation has seemed useful or new information warrants expanded coverage.

As in the classic first edition, this new edition of Introduction to Algorithms presents a rich variety of algorithms and covers them in considerable depth while making their design and analysis accessible to all levels of readers. Further, the algorithms are presented in pseudocode to make the book easily accessible to students from all programming language backgrounds.

Each chapter presents an algorithm, a design technique, an application area, or a related topic. The chapters are not dependent on one another, so the instructor can organize his or her use of the book in the way that best suits the course's needs. Additionally, the new edition offers a 25% increase over the first edition in the number of problems, giving the book 155 problems and over 900 exercises that reinforce the concepts the students are learning.

Excellent Show and Tell 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the things that is so great about Robin William's books including this one is that she gives you the graphic supporting the text on the same page. You do not have to search for the graphic a few pages before or behind the text. Everything she says makes sense when you see the graphic.

Editorial Review:

So you have a great concept and all the fancy digital tools you could possibly require¿what¿s stopping you from creating beautiful pages? Namely the training to pull all of these elements together into a cohesive design that effectively communicates your message. Not to worry: This book is the one place you can turn to find quick, non-intimidating, excellent design help.

PERFECT! AWESOME! Need I say more? 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

When I went for a job interview a few months ago all I knew about SQL was that it had something to do with databases. When I informed the interviewer I didn't know SQL, the look on his face let me know I was doomed. So as soon as I left that interview I got online and purchased this book determined to learn as much as I can, in an inexpensive way, and quickly. Wow! This book turned out to be all of those things. It is very easy to understand and made SQL seem like a breeze. I loved the examples and plan to purchase an intermediate-advanced SQL book very soon. Hope SAMS Teach Yourself can help me out with one of those too. With their help I think I can add 'knowlege of SQL' on my resume.

Editorial Review:

Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes has established itself as the gold standard for introductory SQL books, offering a fast-paced accessible tutorial to the major themes and techniques involved in applying the SQL language. Forta¿s examples are clear and his writing style is crisp and concise. As with earlier editions, this revision includes coverage of current versions of all major commercial SQL platforms. New this time around is coverage of MySQL, and PostgreSQL. All examples have been tested against each SQL platform, with incompatibilities or platform distinctives called out and explained.

Editorial Review:

JavaScript is a powerful, object-based scripting language; JavaScript programs can be embedded directly in HTML web pages. When combined with the Document Object Model (DOM) defined by a web browser, JavaScript allows you to create Dynamic HTML content and interactive client-side web applications. JavaScript syntax is based on the popular programming languages C, C++, and Java, which makes it familiar and easy to learn for experienced programmers. At the same time, JavaScript is an interpreted scripting language, providing a flexible, forgiving programming environment in which new programmers can learn. JavaScript: The Definitive Guide provides a thorough description of the core JavaScript language and both the legacy and standard DOMs implemented in web browsers. The book includes sophisticated examples that show you how to handle common tasks, like validating form data, working with cookies, and creating portable DHTML animations. The book also contains detailed reference sections that cover the core JavaScript API, the legacy client-side API, and the W3C standard DOM API, documenting every JavaScript object, method, property, constructor, constant, function, and event handler in those APIs. This fourth edition of the bestselling JavaScript book has been carefully updated to cover JavaScript 1.5 (ECMAScript version 3). The book also provides complete coverage of the W3C DOM standard (Level 1 and Level 2), while retaining material on the legacy Level 0 DOM for backward compatibility. JavaScript: The Definitive Guide is a complete programmer's guide and reference manual for JavaScript. It is particularly useful for developers working with the latest standards-compliant web browsers, like Internet Explorer 6, Netscape 6, and Mozilla. HTML authors can learn how to use JavaScript to build dynamic web pages. Experienced programmers can quickly find the information they need to start writing sophisticated JavaScript programs. This book is an indispensable reference for all JavaScript programmers, regardless of experience level.
