Outstanding Guidance! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire Step-By-Step series covering MS Office. I strongly suggest any student, curious George or researcher to pick up a copy and read it. I recently purchased MS 2007 Access, Excel, Power Point and Word set in the Step-By-Step series. The authors are concise in their descriptions without being boring and the information is invaluable.

PowerPoint: The Dark Side 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Edward Tufte insightfully tells us how PowerPoint corrupts the communication process by forcing its format on content. For me, this is just another example of dumbing down in general. No longer do managers communicate via reasoned analysis through narrative. No, all communication must be as brief as possible and to the point. Unfortunately, sometimes the point needs more than just a multi-bulleted slide. Tufte's argument is highlighted by the PowerPoint parody of the Gettysburg Address. I too experience the constraint of expressing important detail, context and relationships when the expectation is to fit it into a Word table or a Power Point presentation. Now, this is not a call for wordiness. Unnecessarily long and tedious papers will do just as well in stifling communication. The point is to learn to write well and communicate well, without surrendering to the allure of the promises of new technology that may actually provide the opposite. Read Tufte's treatise and get a good idea of what not to do and why.

Speeds the transition from older versions 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have used Powerpoint extensively since the first edition and know it better than most -- and I have alwasy been able to easilly adapt to the latest version. This one is DIFFERENT -- and that's an understatement. Most will think, as did I, that MS screwed up a good program. But there is genius to the new "ribbon approach" - once you get used to it. You will need focus, patience and a helper, like the "Dummies" guide. I wish they had better titles, because having it sitting next to your desk makes YOU feel like a Dummy ... bet get over it, get the book and it will speed up your transition to the new version significantly. Could have had a bit more on the "power-features" but definitely worth the money.

Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 Step by Step This is a good book for an 76 year old man like me. It was a great help in teaching me to do a PowerPoint program. This is a good book for beginers. Its not perfect, but I could not find a better book for a beginner like me, I know as I tried a few of them including "For Dummies"

One of My Favorites! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The Step by Step books are my second favorite to use and this particular book follows suit. I chose 4 stars because these books as far as layout and ease of undertanding/use goes, are just one step under what I consider the best out there, the "Inside Out" books.

Very satisfied 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Small Business Resource 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent resource for small business owners with little computer knowledge who may need to create business presentations and even basic graphics for logos or flyers. For those small business owners who think out of the box, this book can help with learning PowerPoint's graphics features to create letterhead, business postcards, customer thank you cards, and even newsletters. Good resource!

True or False?
Most PowerPoint presentations are:
compelling illuminating informative clear and to the point
Answer: False
Make a change following the principles of Stephen Kosslyn:
a world authority on the visual brain a clear and engaging writer
Making PowerPoint presentations that are clear, compelling, memorable, and even enjoyable is not an obscure art. In this book, Stephen Kosslyn, a renowned cognitive neuroscientist, presents eight simple principles for constructing a presentation that takes advantage of the information modern science has discovered about perception, memory, and cognition. Using hundreds of images and sample slides, he shows the common mistakes many people make and the simple ways to fix them. For example, never use underlining to emphasize a word--the line will cut off the bottom of letters that have descending lines (such as p and g), which interferes with the brain's ability to recognize text. Other tips include why you should state your conclusion at the beginning of a presentation, when to use a line graph versus a bar graph, and how to use color correctly. By following Kosslyn's principles, anyone will be able to produce a presentation that works!

Another winner in this series 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

For a senior citizen who now uses a computer daily for work, hobbies, and teaching after his first 60 years with no experience whatsoever in using computers, many of the tasks are daunting. Without the background computer experience that the younger people grow up with, each new (to me) application is not at all intuitive, and this book enabled me to put together a series of one hour Power Point presentations of 30-60 pictures each in less than a day. This was done using only the book and without outside help. I now have the confidence to use it regularly and receive rave reviews for the clarity of my teaching from young adult people in my class. The pictures with arrows and numbers on the screen are essential to my understanding of the use of the program.

Editorial Review:

  • Covers new PowerPoint features including how to create presentation slides, dress them up using templates and graphics, add sound and animation, and present in a business or Internet setting
  • Equips users to present visually charged, captivating slideshows
  • Sophisticated, revised full-color design provides readers with easier navigation
  • Shows users how to make real-world use of PowerPoint 2007 with highly visual two-page tutorials and numbered, step-by-step screen shots in full color on high-quality paper
