Some flaws, not worth buying. 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book because it uses a hands-on approach, plus I was attracted by its colourful pages and neat layout. But I was somewhat disappointed after reading it and trying out the exercises. The chapter on macros and VBA is the worst. One macro on printing slides did not work out as intended. The VBA part was poorly explained, you end up staring at lines of code and wondering the logic behind them. Another glitch is that the clipart used in the exercises may not be available to every Powerpoint 2000 user, so some of us have to take the trouble to download them from Microsoft's Live Clipart Gallery. The course coverage isn't as comprehensive as it meant to be. For instance, it does not teach you how to simulate an object (such as a bird) flying across the slide. I expect more from an advanced level book like this. My first, and probably last, book from the Shelly Cashman series.

Editorial Review:

Part of the highly successful Shelly Cashman series, this text goes beyond the basics to teach students introductory and advanced topics in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.

Editorial Review:

In this book, presentations guru Nick Oulton sets out a revolutionary approach that will allow you to use PowerPoint to multiply the power of your presentations. You will radically increase the chances of them impressing your audience and achieving your objectives. Using tried and tested principles, shows how, through practical, systematic thinking and kick starting your attitude to the visual aids you use, you can ditch old habits and bring your future presentations to life in a way that truly enhances the clarity of what you put over, and fires the imagination of those to whom you present. The book is accessible and practical, it: helps you question unwarranted assumptions about presentations and visual aids that can leave your presentational impact stillborn; sets out a logical way to set objectives and put together a presentation that is audience-focused and likely to persuade; shows in detail how PowerPoint' slides that truly illustrate and explain, rather than simply list points, can add significant power to your presentation; and specifies a clear series of formats and approaches that can create such powerful slides. The book illustrates its approach clearly and in detail: using real company examples (including xxx) and a series of 40 colour-images to show how such slides can work. Additionally, the book provides unique links to web sites where you can see more about this sort of presentation in action. It is no exaggeration to say that using the lessons in this book can radically change your presentations for the better - in a way that your audiences will appreciate and which will bring the results you want.

Kathy Jacobs tells it all!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I am a college instructor and teach PowerPoint classes and I am also contracted by many large companies to teach PowerPoint to their employees. One of the hardest parts about teaching software is finding a good book that not only explains the software, but is interesting to read and, most of all, captures the FUN of this program. Well, Kathy Jacobs has done all of this in this book. It's easy to read and she doesn't miss a trick. She not only covers the basic step-by-step stuff all the other books cover, but she also covers all the common glitches we run across when using PowerPoint. Stuff like links that break and movies that won't play on laptops - the kinds of things that only a PowerPoint USER would understand. No more do we have to settle for books that only tell how to use the program when everything is working - Now we have a book that shows how to workaround the common problems as well. My hat's off to Kathy on this one. EXCELLENT BOOK!

Editorial Review:

The peskiest PowerPoint problems are investigated-saving to removable media, how to back save, fast saves and other presentation corruptors, the AutoFormat feature, video drivers, hardware acceleration, and missing slide content. Also detailed is how to use PowerPoint for informational kiosks, games, and web sites. Tips for creating reports and graphical essays and for using PowerPoint with other products in the Microsoft Office suite are provided.
