Terrible CD companion 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Terrible CD companion. Most samples have errors, don't run as installed due to incorrect paths and missing connection strings and database auth's. Very frustrating book to learn from if used as a STEP by STEP as the title indicates. Seek a different learning source.

Disappointed Forta Fan 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have almost every book that Ben Forta has written on ColdFusion and have been a big fan of his teaching and writing style but this book is a big disappointment to me.

Firstly, I did not purchase volume 1 since I already have a basic working knowledge CF thanks to his previous books and at the current prices didn't think I needed a reprise. Vol 2 appeared to cover the new CF8 features but it appparently is not a stand-alone version since there were no instructions as to where to obtain and install the sample code and tutorials used in the book. I finally found the link on the back cover, visited the Forta/book site and accessed the forum. I found the supporting files to Vol 2, downloaded and installed them, then discovered that I apparently needed databases and files included in previous books. Not only that, but to "reduce the price" of the book, half the chapters are online.

Chapt 29 spent a great deal of Page space (which seems to be at a premium) expounding on the need to create a good user experience (navigation techniques, fast downloads, etc) - this book was supposed to be on CF8, not best practices in website design. I would have preferred he used the valuable page space for CF8 features and techniques.

I still haven't located what appear to be missing files in a missing directory called "imageserver", (which displays a "page not found" message when trying to view the example code files in Chapter 33) even after spending some frustrating time surfing the online forum.

I expected a book devoted to the new and upgraded CF8 features and not revisiting previous code examples (like Next N) unless the new features impact the former way of doing things, which are covered in a previous Forta books like: Macromedia ColdFusion MX 7 Web Application Construction Kit and Advanced Macromedia ColdFusion MX Application Development (3rd Edition).

I paid almost $50 for one volume of a 3 volume book which is mostly a rewrite of the previous content and half of that is only available on line. I would rather have paid a bit more for new valuable content on the changes in CF8.

When I purchase a book, I expect a book that I can read sitting in a chair - not sitting at a computer reading a pdf file or printing it out on a ream of paper!

Forta's other books are great but this book is not worth the price.

Editorial Review:

ColdFusion 8 Web Application Construction Kit, Volume 2: Application Development begins by introducing important code organization and management techniques, and then progresses to topics that include integrating with all sorts of other technologies (including PDF, Adobe Flex, Ajax, advanced SQL and databases), debugging, and optimizing performance. From design and planning, to application deployment and troubleshooting, this instructional reference is all you need to successfully work, create, and progress with ColdFusion 8, the the most important ColdFusion since the product was created back in 1995

Gopalakrishnan does it again.. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

RAC Handbook is an excellent RAC book for new and experienced DBAs. The book is not one of the several 600 page RAC books that contain pages of not-so valuable information. The RAC Handbook is around 400 pages and it is packed with excellent detail on how to install RAC and troubleshoot common performance issues. The author of this book, K Gopalakrishnan is also the author of "Oracle Wait Interface: A Practical Guilde to Performance Diagnostics & Tuning" by Oracle Press. This book won an Oracle award and it one of the best performance tuning books. The RAC Handbook features an excellent chapter on Cache Fusion and several easy to understand examples of how blocks are transferred amongst multiple nodes. The RAC Handbook also has a decent chapter on ASM which could have been a little longer and could have gone into more detail. The chapter on RAC installation will walk you though using the cluster verify utilities which can and will alleviate many headaches that can be experienced during a RAC installation. This book is a great read for anyone that wants to build their RAC skills. Gopalakrishnan is an excellent author and I trust his research.

Books Online gone prolix 2 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

I was disappointed with this book, which I bought together with SQL Tuning by Dan Tow, hoping to get well-digested expert advice. SQL Tuning was all that I hoped for, and I highly recommend it.

This book, though, has that creepy quality so common to MSFT Press books, where very knowledgeable people, usually connected with the MSFT development teams, list feature after feature in long, passive-voice descriptions, failing to discriminate for the reader and advise as to what is useful and what is not. You have the sense that they spent lots of time at trade shows touting the latest horde of "features", and little time coding under the strain of deadlines and client expectations. To them, every SQL Server nuance is always useful and wonderful and should get fair mention :(

This is a simple example, but SQL Tuning tells me that table scans are normally fine when selecting above 20% of rows, and index seeks are good for row counts under a percent, the space between depending on circumstance (which gray space the book goes on to address). This book, meanwhile, provides no real guidance, and tells me that table scans can be good, and indexes are useful too, and that SQL Server handles both nicely, and that the optimizer selects one or the other, and that it uses iterators, and that they are important, and that you can see what the optimizer has selected, and that you can change that if you want, and that you can automate the change, and that you can document the change, and here are the 4 related undocumented stored procs, and that this is new for 2005, and that there are other related matters, and that SQL Server has all this. Thanks!

Seems they are always plugging the product and never can admit to having suffered with its complexity. The recommendations, if you get them, are always muted by a kool-aid soaked affinity for SQL Server, which does all things well and will never fail to offer just the feature you need to succeed.

The book runs very long and strikes me as a big core dump on 3,000 topics, none of which seem prioritized or emphasized in distinct categories. Sure, the book has distinct chapters into which related material is dumped, but this fails to serve as **guidance**, which is what you are buying the book for. Not written by people in the trenches. Not recommended unless you want to buy some additional MSFT documentation.

Not As Useful If You Already Work In BI 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've already got experience with tools such as Cognos, ProClarity, Informatica and others. I bought this book to figure out how to use Microsoft's BI tools.

The book really is a case study book where you are the business analyst, the data modeler, the systems analyst the ETL guy and the report developer. It is written with a "learn by doing" premise. If you haven't done all of the business requirements exercises, data modeler tasks, etc... you won't be able to do the Integration Services exercises or the MDX exercises in the book. In other words, you must 1) read the book in the order of its chapters and 2) do the exercises in the chapter order.

Additionally, many chapters are a review of the theory (like snowflake vs. star), business requirements gathering and why you have data marts stuff like that. If you already know how to do these things, or you know that you don't have to take on that role, then you probably won't find this book as useful.

Good series, this volume is not as great as other in the series... 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I got this book, along with Volume 1 and 2, and I will say that I was more than a little disappointed. The biggest issue that I have is that half the book is not included in the book. Basically, in the front of this volume, it says that chapters 41-54 are only on-line. For me, I like having the books for reference when I am not at my computer, so having those sections on-line only are more than a little annoying!

I also noticed more typo's in this volume than the other two. The actual content in the book is fairly helpful and have helped me out.
