But the great lords of Law and Chaos have other plans for this tormented adventurer.

Editorial Review:

“The stories here are the raw heart of Michael Moorcock. They are the spells that first drew me and all the numerous admirers of his work with whom I am acquainted into Moorcock’s luminous and captivating web.”
–from the Foreword by Alan Moore, creator of V for Vendetta

When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melniboné, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique hero–weak in body, subtle in mind, dependent on drugs for the vitality to sustain himself–with great crimes behind him and a greater destiny ahead: a rock-and-roll antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the sixties into one enduring archetype.

Now, with a major film in development, here is the first volume of a dazzling collection of stories containing the seminal appearances of Elric and lavishly illustrated by award-winning artist John Picacio–plus essays, letters, maps, and other material. Adventures include “The Dreaming City,” “While the Gods Laugh,” “Kings in Darkness,” “Dead God’s Homecoming,” “Black Sword’s Brothers,” and “Sad Giant’s Shield.”

An indispensable addition to any fantasy collection, Elric: The Stealer of Souls is an unmatched introduction to a brilliant writer and his most famous–or infamous–creation.

“The most significant UK author of sword and sorcery, a form he has both borrowed from and transformed.”
–The Encyclopedia of Fantasy

Editorial Review:

“Moorcock’s writing is intricate, fabulous, and mellifluous. Reading his words I was, and am, reminded of music. His novels are symphonic experiences. They dance and cry and bleed and make promises that can live only in the moment of their utterance.”
–from the Foreword by Walter Mosley, New York Times bestselling author of Blonde Faith and Devil in a Blue Dress

Elric of Melniboné. The name is like a magic spell, conjuring up the image of an albino champion and his cursed, vampiric sword, Stormbringer. Elric, the last emperor of a cruel and decadent race, rogue and adventurer, hero and murderer, lover and traitor, is mystery and paradox personified–a timeless testament to the creative achievement of Michael Moorcock, the most significant fantasy writer since Tolkien.

Now comes the second in this definitive series of Elric volumes. Gorgeously illustrated by acclaimed artist Michael Wm. Kaluta and including a new Introduction by Michael Moorcock, this collection features, along with Elric, such renowned characters as Erekosë, Rackhir the Red Archer, and Count Renark von Bek. Readers will delight in adventures that include “To Rescue Tanelorn . . .,” “Master of Chaos,” “The Singing Citadel,” “The Black Blade’s Song,” and the novella version of “The Eternal Champion.”

Elric: To Rescue Tanelorn is essential reading for every fantasy fan and provides indelible proof–if any was needed–of the genius of Michael Moorcock.

“The most significant UK author of sword and sorcery, a form he has both borrowed from and transformed.”

A rare achievement 4 out of 5 stars.

I'm truly sorry for having taken so long in discovering Michael Moorcock. The element of the supernatural in his stories is as uncanny and unearthly as in vintage Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft. Definately the most addictive fantasy I've picked up in some time: the prose runs on adrenaline, every chapter ending on a hook that makes the book nearly impossible to put down. But it is the Elric character that bestows upon this series its deserved immortality. An albino, a weak offspring who should've died and yet lived on to become the most powerful sorcerer of his age...Elric is the archetype of all visionaries throughout the ages - those who felt the burden of existence too intensely to bear it. Those whom the rest of humanity both requires and scorns.

An Eternal Champion 5 out of 5 stars.

"There are 6 books in the original Elric saga; Elric of Melnibone is the first. All of them are classics not to be missed. Unlike most modern fantasy works, Moorcock's books have complex plots and are rich in language. Keep a thick dictionary at your side as you read these."

Editorial Review:

Elric of Melniboné is a requisite title in the hard fantasy canon, a book no fantasy fan should leave unread. Author Michael Moorcock, already a major player in science fiction, cemented his position in the fantasy pantheon with the five-book Elric saga, of which Elric of Melniboné is the first installment. The book's namesake, the brooding albino emperor of the dying nation of Melniboné, is a sort of Superman for Goths, truly an archetype of the genre.

The youthful Elric is a cynical and melancholy king, heir to a nation whose 100,000-year rule of the world ended less than 500 years hence. More interested in brooding contemplation than holding the throne, Elric is a reluctant ruler, but he also realizes that no other worthy successor exists and the survival of his once-powerful, decadent nation depends on him alone. Elric's nefarious, brutish cousin Yrkoon has no patience for his physically weak kinsman, and he plots constantly to seize Elric's throne, usually over his dead body. Elric of Melniboné follows Yrkoon's scheming, reaching its climax in a battle between Elric and Yrkoon with the demonic runeblades Stormbringer and Mournblade. In this battle, Elric gains control of the soul-stealing Stormbringer, an event that proves pivotal to the Elric saga. --Paul Hughes

Editorial Review:

Elric of Melniboné is the haunted, treacherous and doomed albino sorcerer-prince. An introspective weakling in thrall to his black-bladed, soul-eating sword, Stormbringer, he is yet a hero whose bloody adventures and wanderings through brooding, desolate lands leads inexorably to his decisive intervention in the war between the forces of Law and Chaos. This volume brings together The Stealer of Souls and Stormbringer, the first two published books of Elric’s adventures, and confirms Michael Moorcock’s place as one of the most important fantasy writers of our time.

Disappointed 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 9 people found this review helpful.

After reading Part 1 of this series, I had mixed feelings about the characters and storyline as a whole. Now, having finished the 2nd part I have to say that I am left with a rather disappointed feeling.

Elric is constantly pitying himself and making foolish decisions throughout the story. These are interspersed with noble acts that in themselves are unmoving. The author seems to try so hard to make Elric out to be an anguished hero with a dark side, but the attempts are so obvious and the subplots are so poorly developed that you really begin to not care about any of it.

Midway through the book, the flow of the storyline seems completely broken as Elric moves from one place to the other, encountering random events that seem to have no purpose other than to give him yet another poor excuse to demonstrate how anguished and tormented he is.

I have read a good number of fantasy books before this one, but this is the first where I began to feel so absolutely detached from the hero that I really no longer cared what happend to him.

Overall pretty good book 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

If you're an Elric fan, this is a defenite read. Michael Moorcock creates a nice prequal series of how Elric builds up his skills as a a sorceror and emperor, all while struggling with Yrkoon whose ambitions are also well known. While of course without much deatail (it's a comic book!), the stories are packed with quick adventures that don't stray from Elric's overall themes. What's interesting, without giving any of the stories away, is that Moorcock throws a nice twist of Melnibonean historical twist into the lot too. We know snippets of how Melnibone rose to the great power of 10,000... these stories elaborate on that a good deal.

One negative I found in the book is the artwork. I'm not a fan of graphic novels/comics, so this is more just a personal stance. But specifically what I didn't like was how many of the characters are drawn. Elric is okay... but Tanglebones is short and stocky... Cymoril looks like a punk-rock cyber princess... and Yrkoon is BALD looking like Jean Luke Picard! Ha ha... so if you can get past these aspects, just enjoying the stories for the nice little prequals they are, this is a wonderful purchase.

Editorial Review:

Acclaimed science-fiction/fantasy icon Michael Moorcock teams with comics legend Walter Simonson to present a stunning graphic novel that reveals an untold chapter from the novels starring the classic sword and sorcery character Elric.
Young Elric must first learn to protect his beloved homeland from raiders. Then, he must learn the perils of making pacts with the magical world in return for protection and power in order to become a prince and ascend to the throne of Melnibone. He'll have to learn to temper his youthful enthusiasm with wisdom if he is going to rule the Bright Empire.

Lives up to expectations 5 out of 5 stars.

I've been reading Moorcock for over 20 years and he just keeps getting better. If you are looking for traditional sword-and-sorcery fantasy like the original series, you will be disappointed. Moorcock has moved past that, so enjoy it for what it is. This is still fantasy, but it's expanded so that it's new and fresh (unlike most fantasy being published). He also takes time to criticize religious fanatics, and the current administration of George Bush. A brilliant author who deserves a wider audience.

Editorial Review:

The multiple award-winning author of The Dreamthiefs Daughter and The Skrayling Tree delivers a stirring new novel in his beloved Elric the Eternal Champion saga. When Una, granddaughter of Oona the Dreamthiefs Daughter and Count Ulric von Bek, is left alone at the family house in Yorkshire Dales, all kinds of strange visitors start appearing. They believe that she will lead them to the White Wolfs son, control of whom will give them immense power. They are also searching for The Runestaff, a manifestation of the Holy Grail that Unas family has protected for centuries. Only with the help of the White Wolfs son will Una be able to prevent the power of The Runestaff from falling into the hands of the most evil creatures in creation.
