A Model For Others 5 out of 5 stars.

After 28+ years in this business I have finally stumbled upon an author who knows how to write technical books. This one should be a "how to write" example for other alleged authors.

The book, is clear, concise, and well designed. No assumptions are made; yet it is structured in a manner that one can easily skip over items of familiarity. It is an ideal book in that it spans the needs of users at all levels of expertise and is loaded with real "meat and potatoes" practicality and minimal blue sky theory. No matter what your level of expertise (or the lack of it), you can be creating quality applications within the first hour!

My hat is off to these writers and editors!

Editorial Review:

Visual FoxPro developers are used to building large, complex applications using only VFP as their programming environment. But Windows users are demanding more—integration with other applications such as the Microsoft Office suit—Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Visual FoxPro can be used to automate—either visually or behind the scenes—any task or process that you could do manually in Office, plus much more. In Microsoft Office Automation with Visual FoxPro, users learn how to create powerful applications that span the entire Office suite, using Visual FoxPro in the driver’s seat.

NOT FOR BEGINNERS 3 out of 5 stars.
25 of 25 people found this review helpful.

As we all know, Microsoft does not write books for beginners; therefore, if you were looking to learn a computer language or how to create databases using tools like Visual FoxPro, a Microsoft 'manual' would not be the book for you. The title should be "Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6.0 Intermediate to Advanced Programmer's Guide"

Editorial Review:

This book helps you exploit Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6, a powerful end-user tool that allows you to build small-scale but effective database programs quickly and that ships with Visual Studio 6. The guide assumes little programming or database experience and provides a basic tour of programming and objects, plus database objects like tables and views. (Visual FoxPro 6 is arguably a good place to try out basic object-oriented programming techniques for the very first time.)

Later sections examine how to build user interfaces with forms and controls. The samples aren't fancy, but this capable book gets you up and running with actual database applications. Important topics such as reports, distributing applications (using the Visual FoxPro run-time environment), and the FoxPro API are introduced. Other chapters explore ways to scale up FoxPro applications to SQL Server and Oracle and ways to access external DLLs. --Richard Dragan

A keeper... 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book is not a comprehensive reference book for VFP. This book is not an instructional book for someone new to VFP. This book does not focus on any single aspect of VFP.

This book IS a smorgasbord of useful tips and information that helped me out immediately. Not all of the tips were new to me, but unless you're already a very accomplished VFP programmer, you're sure to find some real gems here, many of which are not addressed in other VFP books. The example code is very specific and detailed, particularly if you download the sample files. This book is a special niche kind of a book that is hard to categorize, but for my purposes it's been fantastic.

don't read just purchase it ! 5 out of 5 stars.

I baught all visual foxpro books available. "1001 things you wanted to know about visual foxpro" It Include more tips and tricks than all other books put together. Even there is some features that change the length of code dramtically, say 1 hour instead 1 week of work.

Editorial Review:

The recent edition of Hacker's Guide to Visual FoxPro 6.0 updates this guide with documentation on the latest version, including an extremely comprehensive reference to virtually every aspect of the FoxPro tool and language. For any working FoxPro developer, this massive book can provide a truly in-depth resource.

The most obvious feature of this book is its larger-than-average format (it measures 11 by 8.5 inches). FoxPro developers will turn again and again to the 800 pages of reference material provided here because of its completeness. In addition to every language statement, the authors cover built-in controls, including properties and events. Each topic is described along with sample usage and short code excerpts.

Other sections of the book provide a lively guide to many essential topics specifically applicable to FoxPro, from a good tour of its history (as a product with its roots in XBase compatibility) to its present-day incarnation (with objects and Web capabilities). Peppered with dozens of quotes from literary sources, the authors clearly enjoy sharing their considerable expertise: they include plenty of tips for getting the most out of objects and components in FoxPro, with notable material on debugging and Web development.

Visual FoxPro 6 is designed to be the easiest tool to use in Microsoft's Visual Studio for creating database applications. Hacker's Guide to Visual FoxPro 6.0 shows that this product has considerable power too. This title will surely be useful to anyone who develops with today's FoxPro. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Visual FoxPro 6 overview and history, data containers, XBase and SQL, field types, Web publishing, FoxISAPI, Active Documents, wizards and builders, debugging tips and performance tips, FoxPro controls, objects, ActiveX controls and automation, Visual FoxPro reference.

A Book for Power Developers using VFP's powerful OOP... 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

In order to benefit the Power of VFP, a developer should understand the power of OOP in software development. This book tells and guides you how OOP is applied in application development using VFP. The explanation of OOP tells it loud and clear that Object Orientation is very important aspect in today's software development. Markus and his associates really deserves commendation of doing it well.

But, I don't have Rational Rose... 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Overall pretty good book, I pretty much read it cover-to-cover over a two day period. However, my expectations were a bit high after reading all the other reviews on this site. First of all, his description of the Component Gallery totally lost me. More importantly, from chapter 12 on, the author elects to assume that everyone has access to a ... piece of software called Rational Rose to design an OOP app. This disappointed me, I would have preferred to have things explained in a way that I could follow along with the tools I have as a VFP developer.

Editorial Review:

This book combines OOP theory and real-world practical wisdom, all from the Visual FoxPro point of view. Covered are multi-tiered architecture; OO design patterns; object metrics; and OO requirements, modeling, and design, including the UML.

Very good VFP6 book if you invest time in it 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I've read several Visusal FoxPro books, and to me, this was one of the better ones. It's not really designed as a reference book, but rather as a guide to helping the reader learn to use the various functionaliy available in VFP. This is a big topic, and the author addresses a wide range of issues. I would recommend this book to users who already have some (but not necessarily a lot) of VFP experience, and want to advance from a beginner to the next level. The book is over a thousand pages, so if you're looking for a "Learn VFP in 5-minutes", this is not the book for you.

Editorial Review:

The major enhancements in this edition over the previous edition will be coverage of the Microsoft Transaction Server and integration with Microsoft SQL Server--the two most important additions in version 6. Coverage of the enhanced debugger, profiler, and Year 2000 compliance checker will also be important to this audience. The new debugger and Year 2000 checker will automate much of the tedious FoxPro debugging process from the past. This book is aimed at the experienced, professional FoxPro developer--unlike most of the competition. This book will provide a "visual development" foundation for those programmers moving to Visual FoxPro, but will not provide basic introductory FoxPro and database coverage for brand new users. Experienced users will find the "Techniques from the Pros" provide plenty of in-depth reference and examples. An additional section will cover integration with other Visual Studio applications--particularly Microsoft SQL Server.

It isn't clear, it isn't very helpful, A WASTE OF MONEY 1 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Briefly, I was wanting to use VFP and have found difficulties getting a book to help me get me around the "new" database style...

I bought Using Visual Fox Pro (QUE) and found it fairly hard to get around

So I then bought VFP dummies, VFP programming basics (OSBORNE) and THERE IS NO COMPARISON the latter book is clear and holds ones hand and takes the reader through the basic concepts in a clear logical fashion,,,, highly recommended

On the other hand DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON VFP for dummies. THIS BOOK doesn't deliver anything of merit.. I Guess I am the dummy for buying it !!!!

Okay place to start if you are just getting into foxpro 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Just to keep it short and simple, if you are even slightly familiar with Foxpro this is not the book for you. Whereas if you are just beginning to learn an xbase langauge, this book will give you a great overview of most topics.

Microsoft Visual FoxPro is a relational database management and development tool. This book is a guide to the software and it's sophisticated client/server features. It covers remote views and connections, upsizing tools, new SQL commands and object-oriented programming.

Editorial Review:

Visual FoxPro has long been the perfect front end for client-server applications. Featuring a robust programming language, a full-featured IDE, and a powerful object model, rich client development has always been a joy. Inside, a native local data engine, integrated hooks into binding with remote data, and Rushmore technology make VFP your secret weapon when connecting to SQL back-ends. MySQL is the world's most popular open source SQL database, running on Windows, Linux, and Macintosh platforms. Version 5 incorporates "big-iron" features like stored procedures and transactions. These features, together with the royalty free runtime model of VFP and the open source licensing of MySQL make client-server applications built with these tools the most powerful and economical combination on the planet. And this book is the only one that shows you specifically how to install, configure, and connect MySQL and VFP, as well as build a variety of client-server user interfaces with VFP. Together with dozens of discussions of real world problems and potential solutions, you won't find a better guide to MySQL and VFP client-server development.

A Quick Guide to the New Features 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

In spite of Microsoft's relative lack of marketing attention the Fox Pro database software has had it's development continued and has certainly maintained a loyal customer/development base.

This book discusses the latest release of Visual FoxPro, which is now in Version 9. It concentrates, as you might guess from the title on What's New in Version 9.

This book has four main sections:

1. tools you use to create applications
2. the Report Designer which had a major upgrade
3. data, including new data type, new index, and a host of other changes.
4. Everything else such as changes to the data model, new and modified commands.

The publisher of this book, Hentzenwerke seems to have found a niche as perhaps the leading publisher of books on Visual FoxPro. They also maintain a web site with a specific section on this book including errata, updates and FAQs.

This is a very handy book for the VFP developer to find out what's new without having to pour through standard documentation to find out.

Editorial Review:

Acknowledging that getting a handle on the new features of a development environment is difficult, the tips in this guide organize the new features of Visual FoxPro 9 into functional categories, revealing how and why to use each of them. Visual FoxPro 9 features improvements in many areas, for example, the Report Designer, which include multiple detail bands; built-in output to HTML, XML, and image files; object protection; an improved userinterface; extendible Report Designer; extendible run-time features; and GDI+ rendering.

So-so. There are much better books out there 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book is just so-so. There are much better books out there.

This book just doesn't give a good big-picture of .Net, so if you are new to .Net, you'll learn some concepts, but you won't see how they fit into the big picture all that well.

A premise of this book is that you can take your skills as a VFP developer and transfer them quite easily to .Net. That is not quite correct - you can take your skills as a PROGRAMMER in general and transfer them.

I honestly think that you are better off not trying to learn .Net from a VFP perspective, but rather to learn it from scratch. You'll only confuse yourself if you are looking for similarities. I believe that you are best off taking your generic programming concepts (i.e. OO design, structured programming, etc.), and going into .Net fresh. It's a whole different way of thinking, and all it takes is a good overview to get into that way of thinking. Again, I just didn't feel this book provided that.

Editorial Review:

For those simply curious about what .NET offers, this book provides a strong overview of the .NET framework and the C# and Visual Basic .NET languages and helps developers assess these new technologies through the lens of Visual FoxPro. Included are introductions to .NET, Visual Studio .NET, C#, and Visual Basic .NET. For developers who are ready to learn specifics about how to use .NET in their software development projects, it offers information on best practices to help climb the .NET learning curve and get up and running quickly. This information includes .NET business objectives, building Web applications with ASP.NET, .NET XML, and error handling and debugging in .NET.
