Classroom In A Book - still the best series! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

If you're the sort who likes to buy software and then use it without consulting the manual you probably own a Mac. That's fine, because that is precisely what the folks at Apple wanted to produce, a computer that needs no manual!

Still, the software that goes on that Mac or on that manual-required-before-you-start Windows=driven PC can get downright ornery. And the accompanying manual is as confusing as some passages in the Bible!

If you're one of the rest of us and have bought an Adobe product, I advise you to get the Classroom In A Book tutorial. The book and accompanying cd are terrific for any new pagemaker user.

If you work for on on a newspaper, newsletter or magazine you also should get Publication Production Using Pagemaker. The two go great together.

PageMaker 7.0 Classroom in a Book 1 out of 5 stars.

I found myself very frustrated using this book. I kept going back as I thought I had missed something. For example, the author claims that all the needed fonts are included on the disk, but they are not, and without them, the examples do not look like they should. It is apparent that the book was not closely edited. REference is made to vertical rules when the action described must be a horizontal ruler! These types of errors make it very difficult for the novice to learn the application. Not that every thing is terrible, but when you spend hours because of omissions or mistakes trying to do what should only take a few minutes, it is frustrating. I do not recommend this book to anyone new to the application because unlike some of the reviewers, I do not know where to find the missing fonts. I also do not know enough about the application to know when I've followed the lessons and have gotten bad the results that it is not because I have made a mistake, but because the instructions were incomplete. So I found myself starting over and over again with the hope of getting it right. Frustrating!

Trash for Cash 1 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Reviewer: John R Iler Jr from Bethesda, MD, USA
This book needs a CD. I purchased the book to learn PageMaker, but was referred to a website to download the required files. Some of the files were downloadable, but the instructor files were not accessable -- and these files are necessary for completing the assignments.
Unfortunately, this book is used by many instructors. My instructor has been promising us the files for weeks on disk, but so far hasn't delivered.

If you want to learn PageMaker, buy Classroom in a Book by Adobe and save yourself a lot of heartache (It's got a CD with everything you need). Besides, Mr. Proot's style of instruction is less than clear, and while this download the files yourself approach may save the author some $$$ in not having to include a CD, it's a very weird way of doing business. The book is a ripoff. Big time.

Buy Something Else... Please! 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This is a horribly written book, flawed by numerous instruction errors and miserable Quality Control and editing by the publisher. The premise and idea of this series is commendable, but as someone who teaches After Effects and Premiere, this was a sad experiment. I much prefer Adobe's Classroom in a Book, and I generally find much better third party titles than Adobe's. If possible, wait for more titles for the new version 6.5 to come out... authors will have had more time to catch up to the program than this particular volume.

Editorial Review:

The Against the Clock series is ideal for any course that includes graphic arts software and computer design software as part of the curriculum. Courses can be found in Office Information Systems, Computer Science, and Fine Arts Departments, as well as Continuing Education, Journalism, and Printing and Lithography. With the advent of digital video cameras, high-speed hard drives, and ultra-fast processors, the reality of editing digital video, stills, and audio clips has become a reality. This ATC book focuses on the use and mastery of Adobe's Premiere, the most popular and powerful non-linear video editing suite. With dramatically improved audio features, built-in storyboarding editors, and highly-sophisticated editing tools, the program is challenging to learn. Adobe Premiere 6: Digital Video Editing adopts a sensible and well-thought-out approach to the task and provides the learner all the information they need to become an effective and skilled videographer.

Great book for windows users! 5 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I picked this book up at the bookstore because it was big, and because unlike all the other books, it had nothing but Windows screenshots. Most of the other ones were 90% Mac pictures, which does the 99% of people who use Windows no good.. :)

Beyond that though, this book is simply great. It goes into great detail on every tool, but is not overwhelming. I have never used pagemaker before, and after about 10 hours with this book (to go thru 400 pages worth) I feel like I know exactly what I'm doing. I definately recommend this book.

Good book if you only use Windows! 3 out of 5 stars.

When I ordered this book, I was excited to see how the author explained PageMaker 7.0. Much to my dismay, she only refers to Windows users. The only mention of Mac is how to convert Mac files into Windows files. I was very disappointed. I think it's probably a great book for the Windows users. However, if you have a Mac, don't waste the money. There are far too many differences between the 2 platforms for this book to be of great value to the Mac user. It's too bad. The author could have really had a great reference had she just taken the time to illustrate both systems.

Also, no where on the cover or in the book's description does it say that it's written just for the PC/Windows user. Is this just an accidental oversight? I wonder how many Mac users have bought this book thinking it would also include Mac info. Very misleading.

Editorial Review:

Create visually-compelling documents with ease using PageMaker Plus. In addition to full explanation of the latest features--old and new--of this useful application, this guide contains more than a dozen tutorial projects throughout the book, to help you learn by doing.

Great book for early users of Pagemaker 6.5. It's a perfect reference book to have when you're working on a Pagemaker file and need to learn a particular portion of the program.

Editorial Review:

You want it WHEN? Ever heard those words? Who hasn't. Whether you're a seasoned pro with hundreds of projects under your belt or a new user just learning the ropes, a strong suite of templates provides the type of quick, intelligent solutions you need to navigate the real world of graphic design and production. In short, The PageMaker Ideabook gets you back to making money--it frees you to spend more of your time doing the important tasks and less of it re-inventing the wheel. Instead of spending 15 minutes to create a simple layout, you'll spend 15 seconds. For the complex stuff--books, newsletters, catalogs, reports--you'll save hours. All the information elements are in position: placeholders for text and graphics (a great reminder of what to include); page sizes, folds, margins, columns, gutters, and guides are set; styles palettes are configured, ready for you to insert your text. Whether you use a template as-is or as a framework for your own design, the Ideabook helps you produce good-looking, marketing materials, better and faster than ever before. Are you a designer? Be sure to read this: The reason some designers shy away from using templates is they assume all templates are "finished" designs: boilerplate layouts complete with photographs of people shaking hands. You add a phone number and address and send it to the printer. I wouldn't use those any more than you would--they make a feeble attempt to remove you and I, the designers, from the equation. They miss the point that clients need what we bring to the table--they want something unique! Imagine going to all the trouble and expense of writing, producing, and printing a brochure and finding out a competitor is using the exact same boilerplate design--man, would that be embarrassing. The Ideabook templates are something else entirely. They offer a detailed framework for finishing, not a rigid layout--big difference. As a designer, I'm sensitive to a designer's needs and when I create a template I do my best to keep it clean and simple. That, to my way of thinking, is the ideal form for another designer to pick up and run with. Re-inventing the wheel every time you start a project is a waste of billable time! Why spend valuable time setting page sizes, folds, margins, columns, gutters, and guides; determining headline and text sizes; experimenting with positioning; creating styles and so on, when one of the Ideabook templates provides it all for you? Just learning to design? Read this: If you're just getting started using PageMaker you're really going to appreciate the Ideabooks. Lots of folks use them to get started with projects they don't feel confident in creating from scratch. I have even heard from educators who use them as a teaching tool! Here's a tip: If you are not using the "styles" feature of your desktop publishing program, take half an hour to learn how. (Styles are explained in your program's guide and help menu.) They will cut the time it takes to create a document in half--or more. AND, all the Ideabook templates are formatted using comprehensive style palettes that equip you to format entire pages of text with a few clicks of the mouse. If you just used the Ideabook layouts as-is, you'd miss out on half the potential horsepower. Chuck Green System requirements? There are none. If you're using PageMaker 7 you already have everything you need. There's no program to install and nothing new to learn; you open the files just like the documents you create yourself. A complete, illustrated catalog of the templates and a comprehensive index helps you find exactly the layout you need when you need it.
