More for high school kids....but.... 3 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

The "but" is after reading the first chapter of this book and looking through the contents there are some useful projects. I've been using Publisher since 2000 for a newsletter and brochure for a non-profit group and not much more. But now I can see several new uses for the program and I'll give them a try. Granted it's not a hard program to master the bare essentials but I think this book may open a much wider range of uses for this user. The only bad thing is the steep price for the book itself. I really would like to give the book a 3.75 star rating...

Not very helpful 1 out of 5 stars.

There aren't very many guides available for Publisher 2007, or at least weren't when I ordered this. My impression is that this guide is fine if you are trying to do something similar to the projects they are undertaking, but doesn't help much if you're doing something different.

Each lesson ends with additional Critical Thinking exercises that call upon students to rely on the skills they've learned. Coverage in this edition includes: getting started with Publisher; changing designs and layouts; working with fonts, styles, pictures, and WordArt; and more. Decent 3 out of 5 stars.
53 of 56 people found this review helpful.

This is a very pretty and colorful book constructed with outstanding paper and quality binding. However the subject presentation seems geared toward high school age readers. A number of interesting example files are available and they integrate seamlessly with the chapter material. But the real problem is as follows. The author(s) will show a project (brochure, newsletter, etc.) that the reader is going to create using MS Publisher. Then the author will direct the reader step-by-step on how to achieve the desired end result. For instance: choose this option, pick this menu item, highlight this text, insert this file, and so on. But the author never explains WHY we did these things. Consequently if a reader is faced with creating a totally different project than the example he just worked on this book is no more useful than if the reader never opened it.

Books should provide the reader with the overall scope of a computer program and relate the underlying theoretical concepts behind the package so that when the reader is later confronted with needs unlike any of the included examples, s/he will be able to figure out on his/her own how to consummate the project. In this regard, the author fails miserably.
