easy to use and gets you thinking 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I write sonnets, villanelles and song lyrics and, before I bought this book, I thought somehow that it was cheating to use rhymes that didn't come out of my own head. Well, phooey to that! Yes, I still do make a list of rhyming words first, but then I turn to this dictionary and - wow - the possiblities just open up!

Some of the reviewers caution that you have to read the instructions/introductions first in order to figure out how this book works. Well, I plunged right in; as a matter of fact, when I later read the "how to's," their terminology confused and intimidated me. Just open it up and start messing around. That's what art is all about, anyhow.

I love how the sections of rhyming words are arranged so that the one-syllable words come first, followed by the longer words. Many of the words were entirely unfamiliar to me and I was glad to have a regular ol' dictionary by my side. (I don't plan on using many of those arcane words, but those of us who love language always get a kick out a new word, eh?)

Some reviewers noted that some words are missing. But please don't get your knickers in a knot over that; there are more than enough rhyming words in here to get you past the jump-start phase. And if you, as I do, generate your own word list beforehand, you will catch anything that's missing (or you will continue on with your life in blissful ignorance). Any reference volume is fallible; I say if you see something missing, please write the publisher so the oversight can be corrected.

In short, a fun, fat and inspiring book. I am glad I decided to "cheat"!

Unique Vision of Fairies 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This is a very unique vision of a fairy world. In reading this book, I see fairies in a whole new light. However, I believe the writer does embrace traditional fairy tales and has built her work on the same value premises of classic writings with regards to good vs. evil, doing the right thing, treating others well, etc.

The trolls are very unique, and not much like the trolls of folklore, other than the avoidance of sunlight. The trolls in this story are almost loveable. I wonder what this author might do with a giant or a centaur to make those characters unique.

I look forward to reading more in this series.

What can Web 2.0 tools offer educators? Web 2.0: New Tools, New Schools provides a comprehensive overview of the emerging Web 2.0 technologies and their use in the classroom and in professional development. Topics include blogging as a natural tool for writing instruction, wikis and their role in project collaboration, podcasting as a useful means of presenting information and ideas, and how to use Web 2.0 tools for professional development. Also included are a discussion of Web 2.0 safety and security issues and a look toward the future of the Web 2.0 movement. WOW 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is the smallest dictionary I've ever owned. Just over the size of an index card (and less than an inch thick) this dictionary actually deserves the term "pocket." On top of that, it actually has a surprising number of words. While you wouldn't want to use it for studying, it's good to carry around or have sitting beside you while watching or reading something for quick reference. It's become part of my normal French routine and I wouldn't trade it for another dictionary at or below this size. It's just amazing.

Small and Disappearing 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This French dictionary is just the size and shape I wanted, but it has two problems. One I should have expected, but the other came as a disturbing surprise. The first, expected problem is that the print is quite small, and someone with less-than-perfect eyesight or anyone in dim lighting will have trouble making out the words. The unexpected problem is that pages 291 to 354 are missing in the copy I received! That meant that I was without translations for all the English words between "indigo" and "resuscitate" in trying to make myself understood to French speakers in Quebec.

I probably should have demanded a refund, as the flawed dictionary is nearly useless. However, given the $4.95 price of the book, it was easy to consider it a throw-away.

Editorial Review:

This guide to essential French and English vocabulary contains more than 40,000 entries and includes coverage of Canadian-French terms. English pronunciations are given in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

I am now in the process of wearing out my third copy of Webster's Crossword Dictionary. Compiled by crossword puzzle expert Jane Shaw Whitfield and the editors of Webster's New World ™, this splendid new volume is specially designed to help you find the word you want -- FAST! Unlike some other puzzle dictionaries, this one is more than just a simple listing of words of six letters or fewer, with no clues to meaning. This is a dictionary of terms actually found in a survey of thousands of puzzles. Here are words of two to fifteen or more letters, as well as phrases and compounds of two or more words -- just what you need to solve even the most challenging puzzles!
