Does the job! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is concise and gets you up to speed with RoboHELP quickly. As a technical writer that is just starting out, I needed a book that would teach me enough about RoboHELP so that I could add it to my resume with confidence. This book accomplishes this task quite well.

By the end of the first chapter, I already felt confident creating projects, topics, and links. This is the core of RoboHELP.

I advise you to read several chapters before installing the demo version of RoboHELP HTML as it is timed to last only 15 days. I had almost finished the book, but the demo time had run out. I just called Blue-Sky (makers of Robohelp) and they gladly sent me another 15 day trial disk. :) Don't be afraid to ask!

Great book and highly recommended. Skip the more complex ones, you don't need it.

Editorial Review:

Working knowledge of RoboHELP is often required by IT recruiters for documentation writing positions. Here, Meade covers both the standard Windows version and the HTML version of the product and provides in-depth coverage of designing a good help system. The CD-ROM contains a light version of the software, examples from the book, templates, and more.

The book you need to get the job done 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I've been a Technical Writer for over a dozen years, and have spent over a decade writing on-line help for various systens, and I can honestly say that this is the one book that you need to buy if you are going to use RoboHelp as your Help Authoring Tool (HAT) for the World Wide Web.

RoboHelp (RH) has dominated the WinHelp Authoring field for many years, and is extending its expertise into the area of web-based help. Those who have used RH before need to learn some new concepts, and those writing help for the first time are well advised to find a native guide to help with the unfamiliar territory.

Fortunately, John Hedtke and Brenda Huettener are skilled and expert guides, providing the information that users need when they need it (and sometimes before they know they need it; the chapter on "Creating a Documentation Plan" is a must-read for anyone who wants to reduce the number of headaches they might encounter. It's not JoAnne Hackos' _Managing Your Documentation Projects_, but they do give you the information you need to get the work done without feeling stupid or overwhelmed.

This is a book that you keep close at hand to answer the "how do I do ____?" questions that always come up when creating a documentation set. The clear and easily followed explanations of concepts and techniques are well-illustrated with screenshots, and there is just enough theory for users to understand why things have to happen in a particular way.

As I said at the top, if you are going to use RoboHelp as your Help Authoring tool for the Web, this is the book to get. Even if you are not going to be using RH, the book is worth getting for the Document Development and Help Logic material it contains.

This guide explains the use and administration of eHelp's latest software package, emphasizing administrator setup and maintenance.

Nice outline, poor writing 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Looking through the TOC for this book, I was impressed at the extent to which it covered the applications of RoboHelp. But, once I started using the book, I found myself spending progressively more time trying to understand what the author was saying.

The structure for a good book is here, it just needs a few more months on the desks of some good editors.

Editorial Review:

Using her classroom-proven methods, Char provides you with an understanding of the new Help format, and guides you through the use of Blue-Sky's award-winning development tool, enabling you to create your own HTML Help systems quickly and easily. Superb Introduction to Flare 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Clearly written, concise and to-the-point: a superb introduction Flare both conceptually (how it differs from RoboHelp) and tactically (how to use its features if you're used to RoboHelp). It exemplifies well written, no nonsense technical writing. One of the best aspects of this book is that it honestly compares the two help authoring systems and helps you weigh using one over the other. Excellent shortcut lists, a handy task index (and nice task orientation for the whole book), and a lovely, usable index. A must-have for any user considering Flare.

Editorial Review:

This book explains how to migrate from RoboHelp to MadCap Flare. Common tasks are compared between RoboHelp and Flare, and new tasks are highlighted and explained. Tips and tricks are also provided to help you take advantage of Flare's advanced features. Leverage your current knowledge of RoboHelp and get started using Flare! Sign up for our Flare newsletter!
