You can sell stock photography, too. 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Microstock, Google's "Image" search capabilities, and rampant stealing of images from Shutterfly, SmugMug, or PBase have made stock photography a lot less possible, and a great deal less profitable in recent years. However, if you're good with a camera and know how to produce large quantities of salable images, you can still make money in stock photography. Just don't expect big fees, and be happy with small payments that can pile up if your work is good.

This book, published in September 2007, is up-to-date enough that it advises you how to optimize your stock photography sales in today's real world. Read it carefully, re-calibrate your expectations, and get to work.

Editorial Review:

Digital Stock Photography equips photographers with everything they need to know to create digital stock photos that sell in today’s marketplace. From organizing a shoot to raking in the profits as the pictures sell and sell and sell again, all the steps are here: Capturing digital images, working with scans, digital delivery of images, evaluating equipment, organizing digital files, building an archive, and more. Thirty assignments, designed to reflect the latest trends in photography, provide readers with a blueprint for building a stock collection. Special sections explain how to market, negotiate and quote prices, and manage a business, plus obtaining model releases and protecting copyright.

a must have (even if you already have several PS books) 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

i practically own a library of photoshop books, manuals, & tutorials, and this has absolutely become my go-to reference.
(for those times when i need something not covered in this book my other fave is martin evening's adobe ph cs3 for photographers).

b/c i'm somewhat lazy, (you can read details elsewhere) here are the things that set this book apart from all too many of the other photoshop guides out there:

1) it is useful for just about all experience levels (other than the pros, i suppose). if some of the individual tricks he illustrates are more basic than you need, they work to illustrate the thought process behind the *workflow*
2) tim's descriptions, instructions, and explanations are actually intuitive and flexible

Editorial Review:

If you’re like most artists, the idea of structuring your work may seem at odds with true creativity, but you’ll be surprised to learn from digital imaging expert Tim Grey that just the opposite is true. This latest edition of his bestselling guide shows you how proper workflow can free you from the repetitive parts of a project and let you focus on your vision. Discover techniques that streamline processes, reduce your time and effort, and produce striking results.

Its a Beginning 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This can by no stretch of the imagination be considered a comprehensive guide to digital video. It cannot even be considered an adequate "operator's manual". It serves a much different purpose. It helps one who knows nothing or practically nothing to get started, to learn the right questions to ask and to determine if this is really a field of interest after all. For those purposes, it is excellent.

In addition to some very basic general priniciples, this book also contains a lot of practical advice and entry level explanation. Why is time code important? Why should tapes be logged? What is the best way to capture the kids' birthday party and not completely bore everyone? Each of these questions, and others, is important but their importance may not seem at all obvious to a beginner. This book answers question like that so that people who will take this hobby further will get started on the right track.

The place I see this book as particularly valuable is for someone considering the purchase of video equipment. It will provide insight as to what is involved. Someone who has already bought some expnesive equipment might be better served by a book that is a bit more advanced.

Editorial Review:

Congratulations! You've got a brand-new digital camcorder. Now what do you do with it? Before you shoot a single frame of tape, pick up The Little Digital Video Book. This friendly guide to the basics of digital video will teach you how to shoot well, organize easily, and quickly edit your own footage. For new camcorder owners, it's the ideal--and affordable--introduction to the exciting world of quality digital filmmaking.

The Little Digital Video Book is not some dense, jargon-filled reference tome. Instead, it focuses on practical shooting and editing techniques, and shows you how to start (and actually finish) that video project you have in mind--in less than a day. You get a thorough grounding in the basics of digital video, from how to get a good close-up shot and how to add a sound track to your video to how to organize your videotapes. The Little Digital Video Book is platform- and software-neutral, truly making it the guide for the moviemaking masses.

Great book! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book does a much better job of explaining the features and power of the K10d camera. I would highly recommend it to anyone that owns this camera!

Pentax K10D MAgic Lantern Guide. 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I held off buying this guide for quite some time because the reviews I read stated that the photographs it contained were in black and white instead of color, and not very good.

I finally caved in and purchased this guide only to find that the black and white photographs were bright, clear and sharp (not "grainy" as I had pictured them) and - most importantly - extremely informative. The guide is an almost necessary addition to the manual that comes with the camera. The manual is steeped in detail and feels, sometimes, like a hindrance when you simply want to get on with it and take a few photographs. The Magic Lantern Guide, on the other hand, cuts to the chase and even adds a few detours that the manual does not go into. All in all, the guide has turned out to be a wise investment, allowing me to get the most - and the best - out of my great camera.

Editorial Review:

The K10D 10-megapixel digital camera is proof positive that Pentax has become a serious contender in the digital SLR market. With its impressive 10.2 megapixel image sensor, shake-reduction technology, automatic dust removal cleaning system, weather resistant body seals, and more, it’s both feature-packed and an excellent value. This new Magic Lantern Guide details every function and operation of this exciting camera. Page by information-packed page, it helps camera buyers become better photographers by helping them take advantage of every control, as well as providing general principles of photography and lighting.

Good Beginner book 4 out of 5 stars.
36 of 42 people found this review helpful.

I am new to DSLR's. This was a good book to get me comfortable and on my way. I would recommend to new users.

Prosumer reference for the new or prospective owner 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I would describe myself as a committed amature or a prosumer photographer. In the next few months, I will be upgrading to a digital SLR in the 6-10 MP range. But which one? I consider myself knowlegeable about photography, but the array of features of dSLR cameras was overwhelming. Which are going to be important to me, given my typical needs?

This reference was just what I needed! Using a generic composite illustration created (through the magic of Photoshop) from three or four different popular dSLR cameras, this book walked me through common features located on the camera body, as well as typical menu options. It explained what each feature does, in what situations you'd typically use/need that feature, and the advantages and disadvantages of "tweaking" that particular adjustment. Then, it moved on to different popular flash options, including different kinds of flashes, common settings, and how each works with the camera.

Finally, this book discussed various types of lenses, advantages and disadvantages of each, which are typically most (and least) expensive, and situations in which it does and doesn't make sense to purchase that lens. It also discusses ways in which a dSLR can work with lenses and flashes you might already own - even manual ones from film days.

This is not a book on how to compose a photograph, but rather, on the mechanics of actually setting the camera to capture your shot. It doesn't dumb things down, but it doesn't get into anything too mechanically or scientifically technical. (I don't want to BUILD a camera - just USE it!) It explains options in language that should be easily understandable to anyone who is a sophisticated enough photographer to want a dSLR in the first place.

I still don't know what model dSLR I want to buy, but, with this reference, I am now equipped to comparison shop. BUY THIS BOOK!

Editorial Review:

If you're a serious photographer, you know that no other camera offers as much sophistication and versatility as the digital SLR. The drawback to this sophistication comes in the form of tedious and lengthy user manuals that can make it difficult to find the essential information you need to get started. Quick Snap Guide to Digital SLR Photography provides you with a concise introduction to the most important features of your dSLR camera. Each topic is covered in two- or four-page spreads with plenty of illustrations and images, making it easy to follow along. Eliminating the frustration of timeconsuming user manuals, this book is the ideal guide for any new dSLR owner who wants to start taking great pictures right away.
