Retired USNR O-6 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the Plustek Optic Film 7200 + this tutorial book. The book was informative at first and convinced me to use the SilverFast SE software in lieu of the Quik-Scan. Unfortunately, the book scans over the SilverFast SE program and wants to tell you all about the Silverfast Ai programs and beyond. The author likes the NIKON scanners and really dwells on them. FYI - Silverfast out of Sarasota FL has a great Tech Support guy named Boris @ 941-921-4815 -- call between 3PM & 5:30 PM and he will talk you through your problems.

Editorial Review:

A large number of contemporary photographers have either moved into digital photography exclusively or use both analog and digital media in their work. In either case, there is most likely an archive of slides and negatives which cannot be directly integrated into the new digital workflow, nor can it be archived in a digital format. More and more, photographers are trying to bridge this gap using high-performance film scanners.

How to achieve the best possible digital image from a negative or slide, and how to build a workflow to make this process efficient, repeatable, and reliable, is the subject of this book. The author uses Nikon's filmscanners throughout, but all steps can easily be followed using a different scanner. The most common software tools for scanning (SilverFast, VueScan, NikonScan) are not only covered extensively in the book, but are also provided on a CD along with other useful tools for image editing, as well as numerous sample scans.

Nice intro in the world of airwaves... 5 out of 5 stars.
45 of 45 people found this review helpful.

It must be the lurker in me... I've always been fascinated with listening to unusual broadcasts like shortwave radio and emergency frequencies. Therefore, I was happy to have the opportunity to review the book Two-Way Radios & Scanners For Dummies by H. Ward Silver. It's an excellent way to get started in this hobby (or obsession)...

Contents:
Part 1 - Making Radio a Habit, a Hobby, or a Helper: Introducing Radios and the Wireless Word; Discovering the Art and Science of Radio; Making Radio Fit Your Life
Part 2 - Two-Way Radios at Home, Work, and Play: A Radio in Your Pocket - FRS/GMRS Radios; Breaker, Breaker - Using Citizens Band; Communicating in Emergencies; Workaday Wireless - Business Radio Services; Ladies and Gentlemen, Ships at Sea - Marine Radio; Citizen Wireless - Amateur Radio
Part 3 - Listening In - Scanning and Shortwave Listening: One Adam 12 - Scanner Basics; Scanning Public Service and Safety Radio Transmissions; Radio Aloft - Aviation Radio Transmissions; Radios in Uniform: Government Radio Transmissions; Radio in Action - Recreational Radio Transmissions; Surfing the Air World - Shortwave Listening
Part 4 - Getting Technical with Your Radio: Building Your Radio Toolbox; A Spark of Electronic Know-How; Installing Radios Right; Getting a Charge Out of Batteries; Putting Your Computer to Work; Troubleshooting Your Radio
Part 5 - The Part of Tens: Ten Radio Secrets; Ten Emergency Tips; Ten Radio First-Aid Techniques; Ten New Ways to Have Fun with Your Radio; Glossary; Index

There's not much that Silver doesn't cover in this book. He works both sides of the radio spectrum, from just listening to actually participating. If the usage of the airwaves in a particular category require having a license, he covers the requirements in order to make sure you stay legal. The basics of the hardware for each type of activity is illustrated in a very easy-to-understand fashion without getting overly technical. Same with subjects like antennas. There are some really heavy-duty scientific principles behind how antennas work and how different frequency ranges really require different antenna types. Silver is able to get you through this without the eyes glazing over... My personal favorite part of the book was on the shortwave listening. I remember listening to shortwave broadcasts from Radio Nederlands when I was young, amazed that I could be hearing stuff from the other side of the earth. This book brought back some of those same feelings.

This book is a very good way to get yourself started in the business of voice communications over the airwaves. Regardless of your leanings as a lurker or participant, you'll find what you need here to make that first contact.

Mastering scanner stuff buying 2 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book should have been called "What can you buy if you are thinking about playing with scanner", and it is good at that. It does not tell you much about scanning, it is more about buying equipment, and possibly software related to scanning. Just think about it: There is a chapter "Where to buy", and a chapter "Buying on ebay". There is no chapter "Do this if you miss shadow detail", though. This book is aimed at a high school student who is doing his/her first steps with a film camera and wants to get those pictures into the computer (is there such a person these days?) The book even mentions cross processing. No, it does not say what should you do if you need to scan a cross-processed film. It just says that you can process your film in the wrong developer and it will affect the image on the film.
I was greatly impressed by the chapter on sending off your slides for scanning. Well you definetly need a book to tell you that you can do that, and it greatly improves your scanning skills
If I had a chance to look at the book at the local store I would not ever buy it. Now it goes back to Amazon.

Editorial Review:

According to the Photo Marketing Association's 2003 Review and Forecast, 988 million rolls of film will be sold in the United States alone, along with another 210 million one-time-use film cameras. We're as likely to see filmless photography anytime soon as we are to work in a paperless office. "Mastering Digital Imaging with Slides, Film, and Transparencies" approaches this hot topic from the photographer's viewpoint rather than that of the graphics guru or PC hardware maniac. It covers do-it-yourself solutions, like slide copy attachments for digital cameras (a widely available but almost unknown accessory) and building your own back-light source for your flatbed.

Thick but not deep... 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I saw this book at the library and checked it out to read. The book has a lot of chapters and topics, but doesn't go into much depth in most areas. For example, the chapter on Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is 5 pages total. That includes some broad statements about how scanners do OCR, but no discussion of how to improve the processing, specific OCR software, etc.

The author seems to own PhotoSuite software (or it came with her scanner) since most examples of graphics software are presented with this package. No help with PaintShopPro, Photoshop, etc. if those are what you use.

This book may be useful to home users of scanners to add graphics to documents, retouch photos, etc. but this is NOT the book for people doing serious scanning applications. It is a misleading title that states "How to Do Everything".

Editorial Review:

Scan this book! Or, read it cover-to-cover. Either way, you’ll learn which scanner to purchase to suite your needs, important technical information about pixels and digital images, installation and calibration tips, and plenty of tricks to make scanning easier and more effective. Written for both PC and Mac users.

The secret of great graphic design 5 out of 5 stars.
52 of 52 people found this review helpful.

I have already reviewed the first edition of this book. There is a second edition with *all new* graphics and more about making art for the world wide web. It is so good that I was moved to come back here and say this... here goes...

This book is the best book I have ever read about scanning. It is also the best book I have ever read about the principles of GRAPHIC ART itself. Everything that I learned formally about graphic design in years of study I found expertly summarised within these pages. This book must be the bargain of the century. Most artists would jealously guard these great secrets, tips and tricks. Look carefully at every illustration (I am still making great discoveries) analyse the appeal, reproduce in your own way and reap the artistic and financial rewards. Real insight freely and abundantly given into how professionals make the grade.

Editorial Review:

Follows a step-by-step approach to transforming raw scanned images into great illustrations, discussing the technical basics of scanning, how to scan almost anything, and how to implement scans into popular commercial programs. (All Users).

Too basic, no meat 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I bought the book sight unseen based on the glowing reviews here.

I wanted to get specific, detailed insight to which scanners worked well, and how to get great and consistant color out of them.

I got none of that. There was no detailed instruction on how to make and use color profiles with scanners.

They talk "about" scanning quite a lot, but give no hard specifics. Often the advice is that "more expensive scanners work better." That's something that I didn't need the book to tell me.

It does cover a great deal of basics for first-timer users, but little for people who already know how to pump pixels.

Every time I thougt it might get into some of the details I wanted, the chapter ended.

It is written too casually for me. It appears to be written by a few guys who have been around publishing. It reads like a collection of casual "shop talk," more than hard info. The authors occasionally get in over their heads technically and make some mistakes trying to explain things that they admit they don't understand, like how JPEG compression works.

I returned my copy, a great thing about Amazon. I got nothing out of it. One cool trick they suggested for Photoshop didn't even work. (c) 2000 kenrockwell.com

A disappointing book, primarily based on its title 2 out of 5 stars.
32 of 33 people found this review helpful.

This book provides a general description of the history of photography and then goes into devices used in digital photography along with definitions of terminology that may be educational to the the total novice. It does little to relate the significance of various capabilities for producing quality pictures and the trade-offs that occur. Some of the points are well developed for the novice, whereas others are treated supeficially and assume that the reader already has familiarity with the subject (e.g. the coverage on color). It major strength is an interesting chronology of the evolution of photography to where it is today. My main concern with the book is that it is far from the 'comprehensive, step-by-step guide' that it's title claims it to be. Anyone looking for a book that helps in taking and processing digital pictures will find very little of use here.

Editorial Review:

High-resolution digital cameras matched with powerful computers, high-quality scanners, and photo-quality ink-jet printers virtually eliminate the need for film or processing. An introduction to the equipment (both hardware and software) is provided, and detailed information on storage options, lenses, optics, image manipulation and editing, compression of files, focusing capabilities, and outputting images to electronic format (such as the Web) onto photo-quality paper via an ink-jet printer is also covered. Hobbyists and professional photographers alike can utilize this technology to enhance their capabilities in taking and distributing good photographs.
