Although I've developed macros for years in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, and PowerPoint, this book still gave me new information and ways to accomplish tasks. The book is well worth the time to wander through. The only suggestion I have is that unless things have changed, PowerPoint has to dynamically create and assign macros to the buttons via the Auto_Open subroutine. An Add-In is created and loaded. This wonderfulness might have been briefly explained. But maybe the assumption is that folks know this already. I'm speaking from the perspective of a person who is new to PowerPoint macros.

Editorial Review:

For any Microsoft Office user familiar with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, or Outlook, this book provides tutorials on the tools and tricks that automate these programs for increased productivity. Each lesson includes instructions and a downloadable file on which to test the VBA macros and procedures provided. Tasks covered include how to run several mail merges at once, removing duplicates from data, and saving email attachments.

Editorial Review:

"With the application development community so focused on the Smart Client revolution, a book that covers VSTO from A to Z is both important and necessary. This book lives up to big expectations. It is thorough, has tons of example code, and covers Office programming in general terms--topics that can be foreign to the seasoned .NET developer who has focused on ASP.NET applications for years. Congratulations to Eric Lippert and Eric Carter for such a valuable work!" --Tim Huckaby, CEO, InterKnowlogy, Microsoft regional director "This book covers in a clear and concise way all of the ins and outs of programming with Visual Studio Tools for Office. Given the authors' exhaustive experiences with this subject, you can't get a more authoritative description of VSTO than this book!" --Paul Vick, technical lead, Visual Basic .NET, Microsoft Corporation"Eric and Eric really get it. Professional programmers will love the rich power of Visual Studio and .NET, along with the ability to tap into Office programmability. This book walks you through programming Excel, Word, InfoPath, and Outlook solutions." --Vernon W.Hui, test lead, Microsoft Corporation "This book is an in-depth, expert, and definitive guide to programming using Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005. It is a must-have book for anyone doing Office development." --Siew Moi Khor, programmer/writer, Microsoft Corporation "We don't buy technical books for light reading. We buy them as a resource for developing a solution. This book is an excellent resource for someone getting started with Smart Client development. For example, it is common to hear a comment along the lines of, 'It is easy to manipulate the Task Pane in Office 2003 using VSTO 2005,' but until you see something like the example at the start of Chapter 15, it is hard to put 'easy' into perspective. This is a thorough book that covers everything from calling Office applications from your application, to building applications that are Smart Documents. It allows the traditional Windows developer to really leverage the power of Office 2003." --Bill Sheldon, principal engineer, InterKnowlogy, MVP "Eric Carter and Eric Lippert have been the driving force behind Office development and Visual Studio Tools for Office 2005.The depth of their knowledge and understanding of VSTO and Office is evident in this book. Professional developers architecting enterprise solutions using VSTO 2005 and Office System 2003 now have a new weapon in their technical arsenal." --Paul Stubbs, program manager, Microsoft Corporation "This book is both a learning tool and a reference book, with a richness of tables containing object model objects and their properties, methods, and events. I would recommend it to anyone considering doing Office development using the .NET framework, especially people interested in VSTO programming." --Rufus Littlefield, software design engineer/tester, Microsoft Corporation Visual Studio Tools for Office is both the first and the definitive book on VSTO 2005 programming, written by the inventors of the technology. VSTO is a set of tools that allows professional developers to use the full power of Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework to put code behind Excel 2003, Word 2003, Outlook 2003, and InfoPath 2003.V STO provides functionality never before available to the Office developer: data binding and data/view separation, design-time views of Excel and Word documents inside Visual Studio, rich support for Windows Forms controls in a document, the ability to create custom Office task panes, server-side programming support against Office, and much more. Carter and Lippert cover their subject matter with deft insight into the needs of .NET developers learning VSTO. This book *Explains the architecture of Microsoft Office programming and introduces the object models *Teaches the three basic patterns of Office solutions: Office automation executables, Office add-ins, and code behind a document *Explores the ways of customizing Excel, Word, Outlook, and InfoPath, and plumbs the depths of programming with their events and object models *Introduces the VSTO programming model *Teaches how to use Windows Forms in VSTO and how to work with the Actions Pane *Delves into VSTO data programming and server data scenarios *Explores .N ET code security and VSTO deployment Advanced material covers working with XML in Word and Excel, developing COM add-ins for Word and Excel, and creating Outlook add-ins with VSTO. The complete code samples are available on the book's Web page.

Editorial Review:

Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) was released in August of 2003. It brought the power of .NET to developing Word and Excel applications. While powerful, it was also lacking in some key features, and difficult to use. VSTO 2005 will be released as part of the Whidbey release. It will be incorporated in the more advanced versions of Visual Studio .NET 2005, and will also be available as a stand-alone product. It has corrected many of the major problems with the first version, and is poised to experience a rapid growth in usage. Coverage has been expanded to include Outlook and InfoPath in addition to Word and Excel. This book is not only written by key members of the team that developed VSTO 2005, but it will also be the first book available on VSTO. The authors provide both an introduction to VSTO as well as a tutorial for using it, including lots of practical examples, and a refreshing honesty about both the strengths and pitfalls of the technology. This book will be a must-have for all the developers considering VSTO.

A must have for new or current Outlook 2003 Users 5 out of 5 stars.

Patricia Cardoza did one fantastic job in the writing of this book on Outlook 2003. I have found it very useful for people that have only used Outlook Express and had stayed away from Outlook due to the fact it felt more complex. Patricia writes in a very neat manner, you almost feel like you are sitting down with her and learning the program as she gives examples of how she uses Outlook 2003 and many of those opened up new ways to use the software. I have gone thru the book twice, first time was skimming it for area's I needed help in and the second time was cover to cover. Both times I got a huge amount of info from and that has made my life with Outlook 2003 much better. Also what I found very interesting and several of my friends commented on this is that I felt like my mind worked somewhat similiar to Patricia as right when I got to a section that I did not understand fully, several questions would pop up in my head as far as how to use these and why and then I discover on the next page, Patricia is addressing those issues. So for me, this is by far the best "real world" book around for Outlook 2003.

Great for my users 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.

This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.

Marty and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that it has helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

Editorial Review:

Brace youself, because here comes QuickSteps: The fast, easy, accessible information on Outlook 2003 in a full-color cookbook-style format. Provides answers to all of your How-do-I questions in a concise and meaningful way. Lengthwise page layout allows for easy page viewing. Useful tips and cautions are displayed in the margins so that they dont break the flow of the quick steps themselves..

Almost teaches you what you need to know. 2 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book mostly to learn how to customize Contact forms. This book gives you about half the info you need. Then you hit a brick wall. I spent hours searching newsgroups and web sites to fill in the other half. There are a few simple things the author could have added so the book was actually valuable instead of incredibly frustrating. For example, the book shows you how to customize a form. Great. But then the book neglects to tell you how to apply that form to existing Contacts.
