Editorial Review:

Every company large and small wants to boost its sales, control its spending, and keep the auditors at the Internal Revenue Service happy. But, no company wants to waste time on more paperwork. These days, a growing number of companies are turning to QuickBooks accounting software not only to speed up their bookkeeping efforts, but manage their businesses more effectively. Organizations come in all shapes, sizes, and business models, so it's no surprise that accounting practices can be a convoluted road to travel. QuickBooks can handle many of the financial tasks companies face, but the price you pay is an overabundance of software features. To make the learning curve even more challenging, QuickBooks doesn't come with a manual. Fortunately, to help pave the road to accounting success, there's QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual, a comprehensive guide from O'Reilly that examines everything the QuickBooks Pro edition has to offer, from invoices and inventory to assets and accounts payable. With QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual, financial managers can quickly learn how to use the program's tools to implement and maintain critical accounting processes. By covering details in a friendly and light-hearted way, the book explains when and why a feature is useful, and then offers indispensable, relevant advice. Each page of this Missing Manual provides insightful tips and tricks to help readers become more efficient, sophisticated users no matter what the extent of their existing knowledge is. Whether you're interested in QuickBooks for its basic bookkeeping features or its more powerful, business planning tools, the only way to truly harness its power is to read the book that should have been in the box: QuickBooks 2005: The Missing Manual.

Good Book with Outdated Software 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

The good news is that this book is very nicely done, providing a useful foundation to beginner and intermediate options traders. I found that I learned quite a lot about the interactions between option pricing and the various factors influencing pricing. The author provides numerous case study examples utilizing the OP-EVAL(TM) software included with the book. A majority of the book contains detailed examples describing how to use the software and interpret the output. The bad news is that the software will not run on current Windows operating systems (Windows 98 or newer). So don't buy the book if you want to try the software on your own. Efforts to contact the author, through the publisher McGraw-Hill, about the possibility of updating the software, have been unsuccessful. Otherwise a good book.

Editorial Review:

Designed and written for active traders who are interested in practical information that can improve their results, Trading Index Options offers tried-and-true techniques without a lot of theory and math. Bittman provides traders with the know-how to evaluate practical situations and manage positions. Among the key features: the basics of index options, including various spreads; how to match strategies with forecasts; alternatives for losing positions; the importance of price behavior and volatility. A windows-based software program that provides multiple option pricing and graphing is included in the package.

I was hoping more would be addressed to doing financial calculations, especially micro-economic and statistical formulas.

EASY 1-2-3 BOOK; HIDDEN PAYROLL SECRETS REVEALED 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

For people who just want to know how to use Quickbooks so they can get on with their business, this book is straight and to-the-point. Every page is in a 1-2-3-4-5-6 step format, which is quite easy to follow. Also, unlike some books, Show Me Quickbooks does address the Payroll function (a part of Quickbooks which Intuit--since it wants users to subscribe to its Quickbooks Payroll Service for a monthly fee--has programmed to be, without 'tweaking', initially unuseable.
To access the payroll function, you must first make sure the initial "full payroll" option is activated. Do this by clicking Edit/Preferences/Payroll & Employees/Company Preferences, and checking the "Full Payroll" option.

Next, on page 39, under the heading "Set up Payroll Deductions" the book tells you to select the "Payroll Item List" from the Lists Menu. News flash--there is no "Payroll Item List". For the benefit of others who encounter this problem...I was able to make the Payroll Items list magically appear by performing the following steps (THESE STEPS ARE NOT SHOWN IN THE BOOK):
1. Type "payroll item" in the search box.
2. From the selections available, click "adding payroll items"
3. Click "payroll setup interview"
4. Click "What if menu item isn't there"
5. Click "payroll manually"
6. Click "set my company file to use manual calculations"....and (after a dire warning that daring to proceed will alter your program forever), the program initializes the manual payroll function.
7. Voila! The Payroll List, and the ability to do your own payroll without paying for the Quickbooks Online Payroll Service magically appears in your Quickbooks 2006 program.

User Friendly Workbook 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Although I have been a Peachtree user for 15+ years, it was with Peachtree Complete (for DOS in a windows format). In the fall of 2005, I started making the switch to Peachtree for Windows, using Peachtree Premium 2006. While the basics of accounting in Peachtree were the same, the process used in the newer software was different and some things totally new. The Peachtree manual was of some help, but "Learn Peachtree Accounting" was REALLY helpful. This workbook is written in an easy-to-follow format. The author also gives helpful tips, along the way. This book is especially helpful for the first-time Peachtree user. She takes you through a well-organized, three-month process, step-by-step, making the transition from your current accounting system to the Peachtree software. Great for anyone in accounting. (Only drawback is that it covers versions through 2002; Peachtree is currently selling 2006. However, the majority of the information still applies to the newer releases of the software.)

Editorial Review:

PeachTree is one of the most dominant accounting software packages for small businesses and there are very few books which provide information not only to the use, but the installation and configuration of the software.

Editorial Review:

If anything can make accounting fun (or even just a little less painful) QuickBooks Pro 2005 can--especially if you get this no-nonsense task-based guide to it! While QuickBooks Pro 6 was all about going native (Mac OS X–native, that is!), this time out the focus is on ease of use. To ensure that you don't miss out on any of the many features that can streamline your accounting processes, trusted Mac teacher Maria Langer uses simple step-by-step instructions and loads of visual aids to get you up to speed on QuickBooks Pro fast. After providing a detailed account of how to install and configure the program, Maria shows you how to enter sales, make payments, work with transactions, track inventory, process payroll, report results, print forms, and more. Along the way, Maria discusses the accounting principles that guide the program's use and delves deeply into all of QuickBooks' newest features: one-click viewing of cash flow and unbilled hours, the ability to share QuickBooks data with Windows users, and more.
