Needed this for class 3 out of 5 stars.

When I received this book, which I thought took too long, I found the bottom right of the cover was ripped off leaving a small gap. Then the next 20 pages or so, same corner, were all folded up. Actually I am very disappointed and will probably see if I can sell it at my campus's bookstore, where they will buy back books, and pay full price for it on my campus.

Great 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the required reading for my course. It has been helpful and informative in areas of Microsoft that I never knew existed. . .just when you thought you knew the program. . .=)

Office 2007 textbook 4 out of 5 stars.

This is for someone with zero knowledge of Office products, very tedious for somebody who uses Office apps. often. Should offer a version with just word, Excel, Access and Power Point. That being said, you do learn some usefull techniques.

Very useful 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a very useful and informative book. I have learned a great deal from it. It is very easy to understand. I am amazed at all the things I can do with Microsoft office I thought I knew quite a bit but after using this book I now know so much more.

Some Help 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It doesn't answer the nasty pagination problem I encountered. Word would stop numbering pages after a couple in a file, go back to the previous page and renumber it incorrectly, then not number the ones after it consecutively just keep placing the same number on each page, etc. There appears to be no way to number pages except in headers or footers either, as far as WORD FOR DUMMIES indicates, as best I can tell. There were one or two other places WORD FOR DUMMIES turned out to be clueless, too; but it's better than nada. Word is vastly inferior word processing software. WordPerfect is much better. Writers I know despise Word, and curse having to use it because publishing adopted it as the standard for submissions. It is a shame it was adopted so widely, apparently by executives in companies who were sold a bill of goods about it by Microsoft, when they would never have to actually use it. Pretty typical executive behavior--making decisions about various office systems their underlings will have to use without actual facts.

Editorial Review:

  • Dan Gookin's For Dummies guides to Word have consistently led the pack, selling more than 1.7 million copies in previous editions
  • The author's irreverent sense of humor and crystal-clear prose make getting up to speed on Word a snap
  • Thoroughly updated to cover Word's new interface, new file format options, and new collaboration and connectivity features
  • An essential resource for everyone who wants to hit the ground running with Word 2007 and make the most of all the new features

Very in-depth 4 out of 5 stars.

Quite a comprehensive guide to regular expressions. Gets very detailed in the areas that it covers. However, definitely not a 'beginner's guide'. I highly recommend that you are already comfortable with the basis of regular expressions before picking up this book. You will get way more out of it if this is not your first introduction to it. Comfort and proficiency with Perl would also be a big help. Title is correct though, this is a guide to 'mastering' regular expressions, not learning them from the beginning.

Editorial Review:

Regular expressions are an extremely powerful tool for manipulating text and data. They are now standard features in a wide range of languages and popular tools, including Perl, Java, VB.NET and C# (and any language using the .NET Framework), PHP, Python, Ruby, Tcl, MySQL, awk, and Emacs. If you don't use regular expressions yet, you will discover in this book a whole new world of mastery over your data. If you already use them, you'll appreciate this book's unprecedented detail and breadth of coverage. If you think you know all you need to know about regular expressions, this book is a stunning eye-opener. A command of regular expressions is an invaluable skill. Yet what is power in the hands of an expert can be fraught with peril for the unwary. Mastering Regular Expressions will help you navigate the minefield to becoming an expert.

This version has NO CD 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

There are three versions of the second edition, only one of which has the CD:

The first one is published by the MIT Press, with the title "Introduction to Algorithms". This one has no CD. This is the one Amazon currently carries, so if you buy from Amazon, you get no CD.

The second one is published by McGraw-Hill, also with the title "Introduction to Algorithms". This one also has no CD.

The third one is published by McGraw-Hill too, but has the title "Introduction to Algorithms and Java CD-ROM". This is the one with the CD. It's much more expensive than the other two.

The CD in the third version contains implementations of the algorithms in Java.

To find someone that carries the CD version, search for this ISBN-13 number: 9780072970548 , or for "Introduction to Algorithms and Java CD-ROM" .

Note: Some listings that come up for the ISBN number will not be the correct version. Look carefully for "and Java CD-ROM" before buying.

Editorial Review:

The first edition won the award for Best 1990 Professional and Scholarly Book in Computer Science and Data Processing by the Association of American Publishers. This edition is no longer available. Please see the Second Edition of this title.

Editorial Review:

This thorough, self-paced guide to Adobe InDesign CS3 is ideal for beginning users who want to master the key features of this program, while readers who already have some experience with InDesign can use this book to familiarize themselves with InDesign CS3's newest features. Using step-by-step, project-based lessons, each chapter contains a project that builds upon the reader's growing knowledge of the program, while review questions at the end of each chapter reinforce the most important skills learned in each lesson. The companion CD contains all the assets readers will need to work through each project in the book. Adobe InDesign CS3, Adobe's page layout and design software, has been updated to accelerate user productivity with loads of new features: new Photoshop effects--including gradient feathering, inner shadows, and glows--that you can apply to objects on a page; finer transparency controls, which let you apply transparency settings independently to an object's fill, stroke, and content for more complex visual looks; numerous productivity enhancements; advanced find/change features; new table and cell styles; export to XHTML, and more.

Educational instructor notes—created to help teachers plan, organize, and time their lessons—are available for this book (and for other Classroom in a Book titles) at www.peachpit.com/instructorresources.

SPECIAL NOTE: Before starting the lessons in the book, visit www.peachpit.com/indesigncs3cib for important lesson and project file updates.

Save Your Money 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

One reviewer has said you would think that Microsoft would spend more money and time on protecting is manual and this shows. I totally agree. If you want to learn how to use Microsoft word 2007 I would suggest you look for a different kind of manual.
This book depends entirely upon your using the so-called practice files on the CD. If these practice files don't show you what you need to know, you're out of luck. Let's take a look at some examples of how the book works:
The instructions for sending a fax are included in a text box about 3 x 5 inches and tell you virtually nothing about how to send a fax.
Instructions for adding bookmarks and cross-references occupied four pages of text and the only instruction really useful is found in a text box consisting of three sentences.
Instructions for creating and printing labels is covered in four pages of the text and refers you to the different elements of the practice files on the CD. Hopefully the files will show you everything you need to know because the text tells you nothing.
Chapter 6 "instructs" you on working with graphics symbols and equations. Of course it only tells you how to use the practice files.
This book takes up a lot of wasted space in your bookcase. In the interest in conserving both space and money you might want to consider purchasing a teaching disk. These are normally pretty useless things, but no more so than this Microsoft text. I give it one star because it does look impressive sitting on your shelf.

Editorial Review:

The smart way to learn Office Word 2007--one step at a time! Work at your own pace through the easy numbered steps, practice files on CD, helpful hints, and troubleshooting help to master the fundamentals of working with the latest version of Word, including how to navigate the new user interface. You will discover how to use features in Word to help create, edit, and proofread documents. You'll also learn how to modify the appearance of text, organize information with tables and columns, collaborate with others, and publish documents on the Web--plus more. With STEP BY STEP, you can take just the lessons you need or work from cover to cover. Either way, you drive the instruction--building and practicing the skills you need, just when you need them! Includes a companion CD with hands-on practice files.
