Mmmmmm... chocolate... 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 33 people found this review helpful.

The Ghirardelli cookbook is presented beautifully. Many of the recipes come with lovely photographs, and the recipe layout is extremely clean and easy to read. It's a very attractive book that would make a lovely gift.

The true star of this cookbook, however, is the results. The recipes perform flawlessly. Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are simply to-die-for. The double-chocolate banana bread is perhaps the first banana quick bread I've had that used enough banana for a noticeable banana flavor---and it's also one of the first double-chocolate recipes I've had that wasn't overwhelmingly chocolaty.

As awesome as those recipes were, however---and believe, me they're amazing---they're nothing compared to the chocolate bread pudding. Pardon me; I must swoon for a moment at the memory.

These recipes are hardly what I'd call good for you, but they don't tend to gratuitously use large amounts of, for example, butter, when they can get by with less; they use enough to ensure a delicious recipe without overdoing it.

In short, if you love chocolate, buy this cookbook! It has recipes for chocolate-lovers of all kinds, including some wonderful white chocolate delicacies (cupcakes, mousse, and more!).

Editorial Review:

America is experiencing a chocolate renaissance, and the epicenter is in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Ghirardelli has long been the standard-bearer for great chocolate. Domingo Ghirardelli first began making chocolate drinks for miners during the Gold Rush. In the more than 150 years since, the chocolatiers who have carried on the company's grand tradition have made Ghirardelli the leading premium manufacturer in the country. Growing consumer demand for higher-quality cacao and specialized chocolate products prompted the experts at Ghirardelli to revise this collection of classic cookies, bars, cakes, and drinks. The recipes range from simple sweets to show-stopping desserts, while a special section on hosting a chocolate party comes just in time for holiday baking and entertaining.

Size is everything! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is the right size for a beginner, like me. I got tired of the price of bread here in Hawaii constantly going up (regular bread at $4) and the quality was so bad at times with some of the local bakers using baking powder to get their rise. I had a bread machine for many years but only used bought bread machine mix (they also cost $4). So, I invested in this book. So, far I am very happy with the results. The instructions are pretty easy and for a beginner, it was effortless. While doing the recipes, I have learned how each ingredient changes the final bread. Following the ingredients strictly does provide nice bread, but I have learned to make slight changes to make it more to my liking (I prefer softer crust and fluffier bread).

These days, I use the bread maching to mainly make the dough, which I store in refrigerator in plastic zip bags for later use. If you are a first time breadmachine bread maker. This is the right choice.

Editorial Review:

The first bread machine cookbook on the market offers more than 130 recipes for white, wholegrain, cheese, fruit, vegetable, herb and spice breads, sourdough loaves, rolls, croissants and breadsticks. Recipes appear in 3 sizes to accommodate any machine make or model. Author Donna German continues to test these recipes on over 50 types of bread machines. This book is so popular, it inspired a 6-book series.

Good, but not my favorite 3 out of 5 stars.

This is a good book if you're learning how to can, and it has some good tips and recipes in it, but its not my favorite. I bought this book, along with the Ball 400 Recipes book, and I prefer the Ball book over this one.

Everything I need with a GREAT layout. 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is wonderful in that it has all the information you could possibly want and it is sectioned very well. The only thing that I would prefer is a wider range of recipes for the salsas and things, but then again it is not a cookbook so I can't fault it for that.

Great, informative book 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a newbie when it comes to preserving foods. I have read this book cover to cover and have learned so much about canning, freezing, dehydrating, and preserving all types of fruits, veggies and herbs. The step-by-step instructions for all of the methods is truly a valuable asset for this book. Now I can't wait for my garden to start producing so I can get working on the preserving process. I highly recommend this book to beginners, like me. This book also has some pretty interesting recipes that I can't wait to try.

The Best 50 Crepe Recipes 1 out of 5 stars.

I thought this book concentrated on how to make to many different basic crepes rather that crepe recipes. I would of rather been given an assortment of crepe recipes using and assortment of ingredients.

Pretty Good 4 out of 5 stars.

The book was smaller in size then what I expected, but has a lot of recipes. It also has large font so it makes it easy to read. The recipes are wonderful and simple. There are a lot of basic instruction for simple crepes and different ways to make a basic crepe. Then they give you more diverse recipes to embellish on the simple styles.

Editorial Review:

Since its original publication, Joy of Cooking has been the most authoritative cookbook in America? the one upon which millions of cooks have confidently relied for more than sixty-five years. It's the book your grandmother and mother probably learned to cook from, the book you gave your sister when she got married. This, the first revision in more than twenty years, is better than ever. Here's why:
  • Every chapter has been rethought with an emphasis on freshness, convenience, and health.
  • All the recipes have been reconceived and tested with an eye to modern taste, and the cooking knowledge imparted with each subject enriched to the point where everyone from a beginning to an experienced cook will feel completely supported.
  • The new Joy continues the vision of American cooking that began with the first edition of Joy. It is still the book you can turn to for perfect Beef Wellington and Baked Macaroni and Cheese. It's also the book where you can now find Turkey on the Grill, Spicy Peanut Sesame Noodles, and vegetarian meals.
  • The new Joy provides more thorough descriptions of ingredients, from the familiar to the most exotic. For instance, almost all the varieties of apples grown domestically are described -- the months they become available, how they taste, what they are best used for, and how long they keep. But for the first time Joy features a complete section on fresh and dried chili peppers: how to roast and grill them, how to store them, and how long they keep -- with illustrations of each pepper.
  • An all-new "RULES" section in many chapters gives essential cooking basics at a glance: washing and storing salad greens, selecting a pasta and a matching sauce, determining when a piece of fish is cooked through, stuffing a chicken, and making a perfect souffle.
  • New chapters reflect changing American tastes and lifestyles:
  • Separate new chapters on grains, beans, and pasta include recipes for grits, polenta, pilafs, risottos, vegetarian chills, bean casseroles, and make-ahead lasagnes.
  • New baking and dessert chapters promise to enhance Joy of Cooking's reputation as a bible for bakers. Quick and yeast bread recipes range from focaccia, pizza, and sourdoughs to muffins and coffee cakes. Separate chapters cover custards and puddings, pies and tarts, cookies, cakes, cobblers, and other American fruit desserts revived for this edition. Recipes include one-bowl cakes, gingerbread, angel and sponge cakes, meringues, pound cakes, fruitcakes, 6 different kinds of cheesecake -- there's even an illustrated wedding cake recipe, which takes you through all the stages from building a stand, making and decorating the cake, to transporting it to the reception without a hitch.
  • Little Dishes showcases foods from around the world: hummus, baba ghanoush, bruschetta, tacos, empanadas, and fried wontons.
  • AII new drawings of techniques, ingredients, and equipment, integrated throughout an elegant new design, and over 300 more pages round out the new Joy.

Among this book's other unique features: microwave instructions for preparing beans, grains, and vegetables; dozens of new recipes for people who are lactose intolerant and allergic to gluten; expanded ingredients chart now features calories, essential vitamins, and levels of fats and cholesterol. There are ideas for substitutions to lower fat in recipes and reduced-fat recipes in the baking sections.

From cover to cover, Joy's chapters have been imbued with the knowledge and passion of America's greatest cooks and cooking teachers. An invaluable combination of old and new, this edition of Joy of Cooking promises to keep you cooking for years to come.

Editorial Review:

It’s a crunch and aroma you can savor in your mind before you even take a bite: that perfect crust and that perfect crumb you can get only in bread baked with craft and care. Artisan Baking puts that bread within reach of every home baker; even the beginner now deftly will be able to turn out sourdoughs, pizzas, corn breads, and baguettes that are truly out of this world. Step-by-step instructions explain the best professional methods, and mail-order sources for ingredients and equipment simplify the baking experience. This is a book to bake from, to learn from, to read from for the sheer pleasure of encountering the generosity of spirit of the country’s finest bakers as they share their abundant expertise.

First published five years ago to glowing praise and awards, Artisan Baking is “a rare combination of clear writing, meticulous recipes, and abundant expertise” (Fine Cooking) and the cookbook that “those who live for and on bread have been waiting for” (The New York Times). It was picked by the editor of Cookbook Digest as the one book she would choose if she could have only one bread-baking book in her life. Reprinted twice in hardcover, Artisan Baking is now, at last, in an affordable paperback format with a new, easier-to-handle trim size.

Don't be afraid of the bread 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

For years I have been intimidated by bread - previous attempts have been disasterous: I have baked loaves so dense they have their own gravitational field, or a bread-like substance somewhat akin to crackers lies in the bread pan. I had almost given up on it, until a friend handed me this book and said, "Don't be afraid of the bread - try this."

The recipies are simple, and the instructions are idiot-proof with diagrams on how to mix, knead and shape the dough. My first tenative attempts were not bad - certainly I have much more to learn and to tinker with, but Brown's clear instructions make the process remarkably easy. In addition to the "idiot-proofing" of bread making, the book has a wide variety of recipes for all kinds of bread: pastries, muffins, rolls, even dessert breads. It is not too much of a stretch to claim that for most of us, there is no need for any other books about making bread if you own _The Tassajara Bread Book_. If I can be successful using it, anybody can - therefore I strongly recommend it to anyone struggling with breadmaking.

    Editorial Review:

Good bread needs more than just flower and water, milk, or eggs. It requires nurturing and care. In this twenty-fifth anniversary edition of the international best-seller that started a generation of Americans baking, Ed Brown shows how to make—and enjoy—breads, pastries, muffins, and desserts for today's sophisticated palates. And in a new afterword, he reflects on the widespread influence of the book and offers five new recipes.
