It's Still the One 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is still a great cookbook with helpful ideas for creating delicious and nutritious meals. I love their blueberry cobbler recipe and still use it at least once a month.

eye opener 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

well worth the eye opening explanations it provides on how to fight world hunger and preserve our limited resources efficiently.

Use for the recipes, not the politics 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I grew up on the recipes from this book, so I admit that my opinion may be biased by the fact that, to me, many of the recipes in here are comfort foods. Still, this book remains simply one of the best basic vegetarian cookbooks out there. I agree that the preaching at the front gets a little old, and I have honestly never gotten through all of it, but the intention of this book is to teach new and beginning vegetarians how to cook healthy, protein filled vegetarian meals. Yes, the front matter is outdated and yes, she does stand on her soapbox for a long time, but this is easily skipped and reading this part has little to nothing to do with cooking the recipes that come after. And, in that capacity it works well. It provides easy, fully developed recipes that are simple to follow even for the unexperienced cook and have complete protein included. Like any cookbook there are recipes in here that are horrible, and then there are some that are amazing. I have brought the book to the attention of many friends who were new vegetarians over the years, and they have all been increadibly thankful for some guidence on how to cook something other than plain tofu. If you are just starting out, this is a great book to start with.

Editorial Review:

With the new emphasis on environmentalism in teh 1990's, Lappe stresses how her philosophy remains valid, and how food remains the central issue through which to understand world politics.

Not ordinary cookies 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I haven't yet attempted any of the recipes in this book yet, but I have looked through it. There seems to be a lot of unique and little known cookies. Some of the recipes seem quite complex. I would not recommend this for someone that just wants a good compilation of easy Christmas cookies. There are quite a lot of ethnic recipes that might be good for surprising grandma or grandpa with something they haven't had in quite a while.

Editorial Review:

Since its 1990 publication, Rose's Christmas Cookies has been a phenomenal success. Who can resist Chocolate-Dipped Melting Moments Cookies or moist Mini-Cheesecakes with Lemon Curd . . . or David Shamah's Jumbles, a fabulous cross between a chocolate-chip cookie and a chunky candy bar bursting with raisins, chocolate chips, and pecans. Whether you need a cookie to decorate your tree or grace your mantelpiece (cookies like Stained Glass or Christmas Wreaths), a sweet to send (Mahogany Butter Crunch Toffee, Maple Macadamia Bars), or a special holiday treat for your dinner party (Praline Truffle Cups, Chocolate-Pistachio Marzipan Spirals), you'll find that perfect something here. Complete with 60 cookie recipes and a color photograph of each cookie for handy reference, this easy-to-use and fun-to-read book will result in scrumptious, festive, and splendid-looking cookies every time.

A cookbook that makes you Swoon 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Years ago I stumbled upon Braker's first book and immediately contacted her about where to get almond paste. This was the first time I had encountered such a heavy usage of almond paste, and it made an almond paste lover out of me. Since then I keep a food service size tin of the stuff on hand as does she. In Baking for All Occasions, Braker, stays true to her love of almonds and almond paste and contributes a good amont of recipes with them included in the book. But if your are not an almond lover, don't be turned off, there are many delicious recipes in this book that don't include it. I had been waiting for this book for over a year and so when I got it I immediately starting baking from it was and was pleased as usual. First off, I love that she included cups, ounces and grams, which is true to her style.

I also loved some of the really different recipes. The Zebra Cookies, which are called "chocolate-Vanilla Swirl are so cute along with the Chocolate-Dipped Cheesecake-sicles. Many of these could be served at an A-list event but they are easy. There is the Red Velvet Cake Roll, that is visually stunning and the Dark Chocolate Baby Cakes with Coffee White chocolate Ganache. There is a really nice variety of recipes and if you are not familiar with her work after baking from this book, you will likely go and try and find her older books. A nice set of 23 photos is included in the book as well as two indexes. One index is by recipe categories. Therefore looking for tarts and crostatas or yeast cakes, you'll find them more easily in this index. She also includes the standard index, just in case you are looking for all the almond paste recipes. These are not your grandmother standby recipes but they are so good you won't care with recipes to choose from like Old World Braided Coffee Cake. My advice to those who do like almond paste, try the Bundernuss Torte. Its a buttery tart pastry with a almond macaroon filling and hazelnut caramel topping. It is labor intensive and requires an overnight rest so be warned.

Editorial Review:

Baking expert Flo Baker rises to the occasion with more than 200 celebration-worthy recipes for baked goods. Whether it's an impressive Dark Chocolate Custard Tart to wish someone a happy birthday, a blue ribbon-worthy batch of Fresh Mint Brownies for the annual family reunion, or an Old World Braided Coffee Cake to impress the Bridge Club, each recipe is custom-crafted to commemorate life's special events. Lots of introductory information on techniques and ingredients ensure that each treat will be baked to perfection, making this a fabulous reference for any cookbook library. "Baking for all Occasions" makes each day something to celebrate.

Wine Writing At Its Best 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The writers situate fascinating personal and societal anecdotes within the context of Italian history and culture, broadening the story of wine beyond the science of viticulture. The authors obviously have a deep grasp and appreciation of Italian wines, and convey their knowledge eloquently, yet without a hint of pretentiousness. A very enjoyable read.

Editorial Review:

At one time, Italian wines conjured images of cheap Chianti in straw-wrapped bottles. More recently, expensive “Super Tuscans” have been the rage. But between these extremes lay a bounty of delicious, moderately priced wines that belong in every wine drinker’s repertoire.

Vino Italiano is the only comprehensive and authoritative American guide to the wines of Italy. It surveys the country’s wine-producing regions; identifies key wine styles, producers, and vintages; and offers delicious regional recipes. Extensive reference materials—on Italy’s 300 growing zones, 361 authorized grape varieties, and 200 of the top producers— provide essential information for restaurateurs and wine merchants, as well as for wine enthusiasts.

Beautifully illustrated as well as informative, Vino Italiano is the perfect invitation to the Italian wine experience.

Great tasty, healthy cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This is a great cookbook for anyone who wants to eat healthier, but doesn't have a lot of time to cook. The recipes can be made in a half hour or less. My favorites are the Szechwan Peanut Sauce which is great on noodles and veggie stir fry and the Taco soup.

Improve your health, save your life! 5 out of 5 stars.

McDougall rocks! I think Dr. McDougall has the answers to our health problems and reading all of his books, even the ones that are out of print or hard to find is so worth the effort. If you want to see your blood pressure go down, your cholesterol drop and your aches and pains go away - you've got nothing to lose by giving his program a try. You quickly become accustomed to a change in your diet. If you want to stay away from the doctor, get rid of your prescriptions and chuckle at the commericals for medications - you need to begin McDougalling. Life changing!

Editorial Review:

The authors of The McDougall Program and The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart present more than three hundred delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes for wholesome salads, appetizers, main and side dishes, and desserts, all of which are meatless, dairyless, and virtually fat-free. 75,000 first printing."

must have for all bakers 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is new, so I've only baked 5 recipes so far, but I'm already in love. An interesting thing about the book, because the authors are professionals, is that the recipes give both weight and volume measures. So if you're a precise baker with a kitchen scale, this book has exactly what you need. If you're a little more casual of a baker like me, then you'll do fine with the traditional measures. Also worth noting is that the authors go out of their way to spell everything out in great detail. If you like the abbreviated recipe on the back of the package of chocolate chips just fine, then you probably don't need this book. If you're looking for the best cookies ever, then this book should be at the top of your list to try. I just made the Double Chocolate Chip Cookies, and that prompted me to write this review. My whole house smells like heaven, and the cookies are unbelievably good (don't skip the toasted pecans). And as good as these are, the Award-Winning Brownies recipe might be even better. Just let them chill overnight before eating, and you will be greatly rewarded.

I've tried the cakes at the Amy's Bread bakeries in New York City, and I wonder if I can get the same results at home. Based on the amazing results I've had so far with the cookie and brownie recipes, I'm thinking the answer is yes. By the way, the book is packed with color photos, so it makes a great gift.

Editorial Review:

With recipes for tasty breakfast fare like Cherry Cream Scones and Pecan Sticky Buns to delectable sweets like Double Chocolate Chip Cookies and Amy's famous "Pink Cake," this book has illustrated color photos to help you along.

This book has good ideas about different kinds of tea parties. But not many of them fit my daughters likes. We enjoyed it though.

Tea Party 3 out of 5 stars.

A good book, but not as well done as some of the others.

Great book for the 8-10 year olds 5 out of 5 stars.

I used to own a Tea Room and this was one of the books I sold in the gift shop. There are so many wonderful themes to choose from and "how tos" so you achieve that theme. Once you get started you'll start adding your own personal touches ... we couldn't keep this book on the shelves.

Having a Tea Party is a wonderful thing for little girls - we hosted many birthday and holiday parties for young girls in the 6-12 year old age range and this was a popular book!

Jan Coad, founder/former owner of Hawthorn Tea Room, Tacoma, WA

Editorial Review:

A tea party is one of Emilie Marie's most favorite things, and you're invited as her very special guest! Her creative invitations, yummy recipes, and ideas for fun activities will inspire you to dream and share a tea party with your best friends.

Editorial Review:

“Cornbread? I LOVE cornbread!” For six years, that’s the response Crescent Dragonwagon got when people asked her what she was writing about. Over time, she came to understand: Not only is hot, just baked cornbread delicious, it evokes—powerfully—the heart, soul, and taste of home.

There is an abundance of satisfying cornbreads, as Crescent discovered when she followed the cornbread trail from the Appalachians to the Rockies to the Green Mountains. Traveling to family reunions, potlucks, tortilleras, stone-grinding mills, and the National Cornbread Festival in South Pittsburgh, Tennessee, she heard the stories, tasted the breads, learned the secrets. Join her in this overflowing cornucopia: over 200 irresistible recipes for cornbreads, muffins, fritters, pancakes, and go-withs. Cornbreads from below the Mason-Dixon line (Skillet-Sizzled Buttermilk Cornbread, Truman Capote’s Family’s Alabama Cornbread) meet those from above (Durgin-Park Boston Cornbread, Vermont Maple-Sweetened Cornbread). Southwestern offerings—Chou-Chou’s Dallas Hot Stuff Cornbread, delectable homemade tamales, and tortillas from scratch—meet internationals like India’s Makki Ki Roti. A Thanksgiving with Crescent’s Sweet-Savory Cornbread Dressing is rapturous. Desserts like Very Lemony Gorgeous Cornmeal Pound Cake make any meal exceptional.

Along with this, Crescent gives us the greens, the beans, the salads, stews, and soups that accompany cornbread to perfection. And she tells us the stories, too. Enthusiastic and heartfelt, this thoughtful, exuberant love song to America’s favorite breadstuff and all that goes with it will embrace readers and cooks everywhere.
