Editorial Review:

Ina Garten, who shared her gift for casual entertaining in the bestselling Barefoot Contessa Cookbook and Barefoot Contessa Parties!, is back with her most enticing recipes yet—a collection of her favorite dishes for everyday cooking. In Barefoot Contessa Family Style, Ina explains that sharing our lives and tables with those we love is too essential to be saved just for special occasions—and it’s easy to do if you know how to cook irresistible meals with a minimum of fuss.

For Ina, the best way to make guests feel at home is to serve them food that’s as unpretentious as it is delicious. So in her new book, she’s collected the recipes that please her friends and family most—dishes like East Hampton Clam Chowder, Parmesan Roasted Asparagus, and Linguine with Shrimp Scampi. It’s the kind of fresh, accessible food that’s meant to be passed around the table in big bowls or platters and enjoyed with warm conversation and laughter.

In Ina’s hands tried-and-true dishes are even more delicious than you remember them: Her arugula salad is bright with the flavors of lemon and Parmesan, the Oven-Fried Chicken is crispy without excess fat, and her Deep-Dish Apple Pie has the perfect balance of fruit and spice. Barefoot Contessa Family Style also includes enticing recipes that are memorable and distinctive, like Lobster Cobb Salad, Tequila Lime Chicken, and Saffron Risotto with Butternut Squash.

With vivid photographs of Ina cooking and serving food in her beautiful Hamptons home, as well as menu suggestions, practical wisdom on what to do when disaster strikes in the kitchen, and tips on creating an inviting ambience with music, Barefoot Contessa Family Style is the must-have guide to the joy of everyday entertaining.

Beautiful descriptions but a flop in the "oven" 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Once I finally found a good machine (a Sunbeam) and got comfortable with turning out successful loaves I decided to try out some bread machine cookbooks. The first book I bought ("Bread Machine Magic' by Rehberg and Conway) worked fabulously, and so I was excited to try more. I found Hensperger's "The Bread Lover's Bread Machine Cookbook" on the shelf with other bread machine books of my local bookstore. It stood out from the pack with such mouthwatering descriptions I could not wait to get it home and start trying it out. To my dismay, the most exciting sounding recipe turned out to be a dismal flop. I thought it might be a fluke and gave a few more recipes a try. I tried five recipes. Some rose up too high and then fell, others had poor texture, one turned out decently but was totally flavorless. This book was a real disappointment. After reading some of the reviews here I wonder, maybe if I tried the right recipe I might find one I enjoyed. However, 5 out of 5 of the loaves that came from this book weren't worth eating, and I don't want to waste the ingredients on such risky prospects. I've decided to consider the $21.95 I spent on this book as enough of a loss and I'm going to buy "More Bread Machine Magic" instead of taking another shot at this book.

Editorial Review:

Just What the Doctor Ordered 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

You will actually learn a lot from this entry in the "...for Dummies" series. It lacks the rigor and scholarship of most of the "...for Dummies" books, but you'll know more when you finish it than you did before you started. You'll learn that most wine flavors are actually aromas, you'll learn about tannins, what is in balance in a "balanced" wine, what oak barrels do, and even what malolactic fermentation is (it's what makes Chardonnay "buttery.") You'll definitely learn what grapes are used to make our familiar wines, and you'll learn technical terms, like "extract," and "foxy." You'll learn the difference between "fermented" in oak, versus "aged" in oak. And you'll learn all about corkscrews. Unfortunately, the authors' efforts to lighten the subject with humor completely fails; it seems slapstick after the interesting material they cover. One of the authors' primary messages is that wine is a matter of taste, and we should all have the confidence to make up our own minds. They help us with the vocabulary we'll need to communicate our conclusions to others, and they convey their affection for their specialty. You may roll your eyeballs when they gush over France and French wines, but we actually do owe the French our gratitude for its contribution to viniculture. Read "Wine for Dummies" to fill in the gaps in your knowledge, and skip the jokes.

Best of the Best 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Best book on smoking that I have ever seen. At first the title sounded odd but after reading it (not just the recipes) I understood where they were coming from. Always refreshing to find an excellent cookbook that doesn't waste money and space on pictures. Smoke and Spice is the only way to cook!

A complete book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was recommended by a friend who caters pig roasts professionally and it is everything he said - full of great recipes. Whether you want ribs or pulled pork, brisket or sides, this cookbook has it all.

Great book for a smoker - which is easier than you think 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Fantastic book with great recipes. Covers the basics and gets into some more challenging things as well. Smoking takes a little longer - low and slow - but makes for wonderful, tender meat - you can even smoke burgers. There is a section in the front that discusses different types of smokers and the theory behind it. I read about this book on some smoking websites and agree - it's fantastic.

Good Starter Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This books covers the fundamentals for anyone wishing to learn how to really barbeque and not just grill. It also has many great recipes, including cooking things you might not normally think about putting in a smoker. Very rarely is there a fancy ingredient, standard kitchen fare but extraordinary food. If you want to learn how to do smoke cooking right, start with this book.

I've had a copy of this book for almost 10 years and I still use it.

Editorial Review:

300-plus recipes. The only cookbook devoted to smoke-cooked barbecue, a hot trend.

Editorial Review:

Since its first publication in 1938, Larousse Gastronomique has been an unparalleled resource. In one volume, it presents the history of foods, eating, and restaurants; cooking terms; techniques from elementary to advanced; a review of basic ingredients with advice on recognizing, buying, storing, and using them; biographies of important culinary figures; and recommendations for cooking nearly everything.

The new edition, the first since 1988, expands the book’s scope from classic continental cuisine to include the contemporary global table, appealing to a whole new audience of internationally conscious cooks. Larousse Gastronomique is still the last word on béchamel and béarnaise, Brillat-Savarin and Bordeaux, but now it is also the go-to source on biryani and bok choy, bruschetta and Bhutan rice.

Larousse Gastronomique is rich with classic and classic-to-be recipes, new ingredients, new terms and techniques, as well as explanations of current food legislation, labeling, and technology. User-friendly design elements create a whole new Larousse for a new generation of food lovers.

Wore my first copy out....! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This amazing cookbook has been a staple in our home since the mid-70's when cooking with whole grains and offering meatless dishes for dinner was weird. The Mennonites have long focused on healthy foods and joyful preparations that are kind to your food budget and consume less of the world's limited food resources. I wore out my first copy and am delighted to be able to still buy this wonderful resource!

Great, but... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook is a great start to learning how to stretch your dollar. Just a few things to note before purchasing: 1) it does not allow for gluten intolerance or other allergies (I wasn't able to use any of the bread recipes, for instance), 2) the philosophy it teaches of using less meat and more complimentary vegetable proteins is common sense and some may not be willing to do this, 3) even though it teaches the use of complimentary proteins, there are a lot of recipes which use white rice and regular flour, both of which have very little protein to offer (use whole grains instead). They make up for this by using lots of soy, legumes and some dairy. 4) Most recipes are hearty, standard fair. No mediteranean flavors like olive oil, etc. That being said, so far the recipes are tasty. I just add vegetables to the recipes for color, texture and nutrition.

Editorial Review:

Longacre has gathered 500 recipes from Mennonite kitchens that tell us how to eat better and consume less of the world's limited food resources. All recipes have been tested by professional home economists. This cookbook is written for those who care about their own health and the food needs of others in the world.

Editorial Review:

Dorie Greenspan has written recipes for the most eminent chefs in
the world: Pierre Hermé, Daniel Boulud, and arguably the greatest
of them all, Julia Child, who once told Dorie, "You write recipes
just the way I do." Her recipe writing has won widespread praise for its
literate curiosity and "patient but exuberant style." (One hard-boiled
critic called it "a joy forever.") In Baking: From My Home to Yours, her
masterwork, Dorie applies the lessons from three decades of experience
to her first and real love: home baking. The 300 recipes will
seduce a new generation of bakers, whether their favorite kitchen tools
are a bowl and a whisk or a stand mixer and a baker's torch.

Even the most homey of the recipes are very special. Dorie's
favorite raisin swirl bread. Big spicy muffins from her stint as a baker in
a famous New York City restaurant. French chocolate brownies (a
Parisian pastry chef begged for the recipe). A dramatic black and white
cake for a "wow" occasion. Pierre Hermé's extraordinary lemon tart.
The generous helpings of background information, abundant stories,
and hundreds of professional hints set Baking apart as a one-of-a-kind
cookbook. And as if all of this weren't more than enough, Dorie has
appended a fascinating minibook, A Dessertmaker's Glossary, with
more than 100 entries, from why using one's fingers is often best, to
how to buy the finest butter, to how the bundt pan got its name.
