I dunno.... 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have tried three of the sweet style breads, trying to make something my kids would like. The have all looked good, they rise nicely and have good texture, but they are quite boring tasting and no one actually LIKED them especially my picky kids. To be fair, I haven't yet tried the basic wheat bread/oat bread loaves... but those recipes are everywhere and I was looking for something different. I sure hate it when bread is no good. What a waste of time and ingredients!

Agree this is a Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

Really great for those who like to bake! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Country Baking is one of the best Gooseberry Patch cookbooks on the market- especially if you love to bake. I particularly love the recipe for pumpkin biscuits and ginger molasses biscuits. The Farmhouse buttermilk bread is also excellent.

For those who aren't familiar with Gooseberry Patch, each book is filled with great recipes and cute pencil illustrations. Add this one to your collection!

An absolute must-have 5 out of 5 stars.

Home Baking! 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

No need for a bread machine with these recipes! Simple, down to earth, and best of all....Delicious! There is no substitute for the home made taste of fresh baked bread and muffins. These recipes are simple to follow, and easy to make. The Potato Bread recipe is my personal favorite, but then again, mmm love those bran muffins also!

The definition of "Old-Fashioned"... 4 out of 5 stars.

I have all of these adorable little 'Cook Books from Amish Kitchens', and have really enjoyed them. The are very small and simple... the complete opposite of a coffee-table/display-style cookbooks we see most often today. This is a thin pamphlet with matte paper and does not include interior photos of any recipes (excluding the cover). The text is in a handwritten-style font and clearly explained. The recipes are very homey with basic ingredients and techniques; nothing fancy. Simple, delicious recipes in a simple, small booklet. RECOMMENDED.

Editorial Review:

A warm, moist, pungent smell through the house. A steaming loaf of bread just lifted from the oven! Thoughts of cinnamon rolls, glazed doughnuts, and corn pone will make any child hungry for home. For these foods are rich in flavor and affection and warm memories of big kitchens full of love. One of 12 cookbooks from Amish kitchens! The recipes in this series overflow with the good, old-fashioned food which comes from some of the world_s best cooks. These handsome cookbooks have sold more than 800,000 copies!

Ah, *this* is where bread comes from! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A beautiful, deceptively simple, whimsical and instructive book on the growing of wheat and the making of bread. One senses the author's love for his subject, and the photography is breathtaking. One page shows (and tells) how a grain of hard red winter wheat does indeed look like a tiny loaf of bread... this is memorable and magical for children. What I like most is the immediacy and practicality of the text: the baker sows the wheat in his backyard garden, and we're told one acre of grain can keep a family of four in (weekly) bread for ten years. Looks like we're planting some wheat this fall...

Editorial Review:

From a patch of wheatgrass in his backyard, award-winning filmmaker George Levenson takes readers on a tour of bread made from scratch. A thresher, a grinder, and finally a doughy combination of flour, water, yeast, and oil combine to make a freshly baked loaf of whole wheat bread. With energetic, poetic text and vivid photographs, the creative team behind PUMPKIN CIRCLE: THE STORY OF A GARDEN shows children that there's a lot more to this kitchen staple than they might expect.

A Bread Machine Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 32 people found this review helpful.

In the 3 years I've owned my bread machine, I seldom used it. That was because everything I'd made was disappointing. Since buying this book the machine now gets used every other day. The recipes are wonderful & turn out perfect every time. The book tells you how to convert your favorites (which is great if you're an old do-it-all-by-hand bread baker like me). And the substitutions section is really helpful if you'd like to modify the recipes or use your favorite ingredients. Everyone I know has an unused bread machine sitting around & since I've told them, enthusiastically, of the success I've had using the book, they're using their machines again (and asking me what the book says!). Guess I'll be ordering more copies as gifts!

The tops for bread machine bread 5 out of 5 stars.
32 of 33 people found this review helpful.

I am not a bread maker, but my son loves bread so I decided it would be worth it to get a bread machine. I was pretty lukewarm about the loaves it was turning out until I got this book. This book is amazing, just knowing about the "peek and poke" method helped my bread 100%. The recipes are fantastic and I can guarantee my loaves will turn out 98% of the time. I also own the "More Bread Machine Magic" which is fantastic, but if you just get one book get this one. For someone that didn't know beans about bread I can now turn out beautiful and tasty loaves. If you are an experienced bread maker you may already know a lot of the info in this book, but for the novice or previously disappointed bread machine owner this book is tops.
