Ah, *this* is where bread comes from! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A beautiful, deceptively simple, whimsical and instructive book on the growing of wheat and the making of bread. One senses the author's love for his subject, and the photography is breathtaking. One page shows (and tells) how a grain of hard red winter wheat does indeed look like a tiny loaf of bread... this is memorable and magical for children. What I like most is the immediacy and practicality of the text: the baker sows the wheat in his backyard garden, and we're told one acre of grain can keep a family of four in (weekly) bread for ten years. Looks like we're planting some wheat this fall...

Editorial Review:

From a patch of wheatgrass in his backyard, award-winning filmmaker George Levenson takes readers on a tour of bread made from scratch. A thresher, a grinder, and finally a doughy combination of flour, water, yeast, and oil combine to make a freshly baked loaf of whole wheat bread. With energetic, poetic text and vivid photographs, the creative team behind PUMPKIN CIRCLE: THE STORY OF A GARDEN shows children that there's a lot more to this kitchen staple than they might expect.

Very helpful! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was a first time bread machine user and this was one of the first books I used. It was very helpful with easy explanations and practical recipes, using ingredients that we were apt to have on hand. It is the first bread recipe book that I turn to now.

The best bread cookbook ever and 5 out of 5 stars.

the best cookbook. I love this cookbook! I've used it more times than any other cookbook I own. My family and I love fresh baked bread and this is the way to get it! I didn't realize that they've come out with new books that go along with this one, but I will be sure to buy them! I have a Wel-bilt machine and the recipes correlate extremely well. AWESOME BOOK!

I bought a Cuisinart convection bread machine for about 110.00, accompanied by a fairly extensive recipe booklet. It was a toss up as to whether the recipes would work or not. I researched on line and found out from customer reviews (bless their hearts) that the Cuisinart recipe book is off in its measurements. I was dubious, but searched for another book. Bread Magic was on Amazon, available used for a few dollars. Worth it's weight in good bread--every recipe has not only worked, but made really exceptional bread of a taste and quality that one just can't buy in the grocery store. I probably have a more recent edition of the book than some reviewers here. The marmelade oatmeal bread is my favorite so far. Just make sure the book was published within the past 5 years or so. It was a relief to find it because I was beginning to think my expenditure on the bread machine was a mispent; now I feel it is worth every penny.

Editorial Review:

Owners of an automatic bread machine know it's the hot new kitchen appliance that takes the kneading, shaping, proofing and frustration out of baking bread. Now the authors, who tested thousands of loaves using all the major brands of bread machines, offer more than 130 recipes for making amazing homemade bread.

A solid first bread book for the novice 4 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I finally got up the nerve to begin the task of bread baking about six months ago. After some research, I decided on this book because it is for beginners and the book methodically moves from easiest to more difficult. Each master recipe in a chapter is accompanied by variations on the same theme so if you make the master and a variation, then you probably have the skills to move on. The directions are simple, there is a chapter on basic bread knowledge and they the breads taste great. As of this writing, I have baked pretty much all the master recipes and a variant. I have not tried the sweet dough chapters (of which there are 2 or 3 I think). I thought these chapters are more special occasion breads rather than everyday so I skipped them. IMHO, one sweet dough chapter would have been fine and this is why I didnt give it 5 stars. Im sure they are excellent recipes. I have graduated to Peter Reinhart's Bread Baker's Apprentice which is a more serious treatise and also geared to novices. Look for my review on that when I have baked through it a bit. Bread Made Easy is not expensive and I recommend it as a first timer's book. Hope this helps someone.

Editorial Review:

For almost 30 years, Beth Hensperger has researched baking traditions, both ancient and modern and from all over the world. In this book, she applies her wealth of knowledge to demystifying what many feel is this most intimidating of kitchen crafts - baking the perfect loaf of bread. This is an easy-to-follow, step-by-step manual, which novices should find easy to go through the basics and quickly learn to bake eight different breads, including white, whole-wheat and flat bread.

I could live on bread and water... 5 out of 5 stars.

Expertly written: examines the varieties of wheat and grains used in bread baking which opened up the whole history of agriculture to me which I continue to research; explores methods for successful homemade breads that I've played with now for several years; unique recipes for sensational, healthful, chewy, nutty homemade wheat breads; unimaginably wonderful recipes like the Asparagus and Artichoke Torte with red peppers, onions, garlic, cheeses...and a variety of recipes of savory spreads for breads. The inspirational and beautiful photographs grace the book - like California Walnut Bread shaped in a Maltese cross on the book's cover - I keep displayed on my kitchen counter in a clear cookbook holder. The book explores bread as a very aromatic and romantic food...It's my source of choice for bread baking.

A good book for a novice cook 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book about 20 years ago, and it has a 1970's appeal to it. The foods remind me of little restaurant you might stumble across and be delighted to find that they serve decent, wholesome food. I especially like the Cheddar Cheese Soup, and they offer some basic salad recipes that one can follow verbatim or use as a springboard for your own creations. This would make a good gift for a novice cook because it offers many familiar recipes that are easy to make.

Legendary chocolate cheesecake. 4 out of 5 stars.

Visited this little restaurant in Middlebury, Vermont many times, many years ago. This cookbook captures the quality and creativity of the Soup Bowl's menu and has been a perennial in my kitchen for close to 25 years. Don't be disappointed by what seems like a small number of recipes, they are all terrific.

Yummy!, Challenging! and Fun! 4 out of 5 stars.

I came by this cookbook by way of a patient giving it away because she no longer cooked. Since I am an avid cook I gladly accepted it. The recipes have an old East Coast flavor. My 2 favorite recipes are: Shaker Chicken and Noodle Soup and Fresh Apple cake with Caramel Frosting which I just finished icing today.

Editorial Review:

Easy and delicious soup, salad, bread, dessert, and drink recipes from the popular restaurant in Vermont.

I would like to order this book for my Mother. She makes the best bread, pies, & pizza dough from the recipes in this book. I hope they publish it again. Her's is falling apart. It is in about 5 pieces and she still manages to find her favorite recipes, but I can't find her recipes. I want a copy for myself so I can make great bread like her. I would recommend this to anyone who has just started making breads or to someone who has been making bread for years.

Excellent!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have passed this book and many of it's recipes to friends and fellow bakers. Easter would not be the same without the challah, Christmas without the rolls and many a meal with friends and family without the baguettes. This book is great for even the ameteur baker. My copy is currently in about four or five yeasty and flour-y pieces. I highly recommend it!! And it's a great price!
