In the 1960's this Betty Crocker Cookie Book was used weekly for my three children, guests, bringing baked goods, etc. Now, the children are grown, and my daughter longed for her mom's original Betty Crocker Cookie Book. Per her wish, I gave her the worn out copy with all the batter stains, and I bought the new one of this classic for myself. Regardless of what the internet can offer us on line, there's something special about this book with its full color illustrations of what each cookie should look like, its spiral bound pages , and its memories of my children's childhoods in the kitchen around momma! It's truly a generation to generation must have!

This is the best cookie cookbook there is. I have about 200 cookbooks and this is the one that I always come back to when I am looking to bake cookies. It is my favorite, as I am a child of the 60's. I received a copy for a wedding gift over 30 years ago, and it is falling apart. I purchased one for my daughter-in-law, and I will buy a couple of extras for the future brides of my other two sons. The pictures and the recipes bring back so many memories, and someday, I will make the cookie cottage that is pictured in the book. If you only buy one cookie book, make sure it is this one!!!

Meeting that passion head-on, The King Arthur Flour Cookie Companion offers 400-plus recipes for almost every cookie under the sun--from traditional favorites like oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies (13 recipes including the soft and crisp kinds, plus 11 variations, such a Orange-Pistachio Milk Chocolate Chippers); to global treats like shortbread, tuiles, springerle, and biscotti; to all kinds of bars and soft bites such as brownies, Whoopie Pies, and Hot and Sweet Ginger Squares.

The Cookie Companion is in the King Arthur tradition, which means that it's a teaching cookbook--one overflowing with tips, pointers, lore, and other compelling information. Thus, for example, the introduction to Special Roll-Out Sugar Cookies informs readers that thorough dough-rolling creates thin, snapping-crisp cookies, but roll the dough a bit thicker, and "you've got crunchy." Their no-detail-too-small introductory basics are greatly aided by the tour-de-force illustrations of Laura Hartman Maestro. I was a bit disappointed because I expected this to be recipes but it's basically on decorating cookies.

I have always enjoyed making decorated sugar cookies at Christmastime, but they were never that great. The cookies themselves were only okay, my frostings always smooshed down and I never knew what to do with the actual decorations, I was a woman with cute cookie-cutters, but without a plan. This is the book that changed all that.

I've now made the plain butter (with the tasty lemon zest) and the chocolate butter cookies serveral times and have yet to be dissapointed. There were a few tricks about rolling out the dough and when and for how long to chill the dough that were worth the price of the book alone. From the cookie recipes themselves to the royal icing and flooding techniques to how to get the decorating sugars to stick, the book is well written, FULL of great pictures for ideas for all occasions and explanations for techniques that I thought I knew, but didn't.

I love this book, it brought my decorated cookies to the next level and I couldn't be more pleased. After reading through this book I went out and increased my cookie cutter collection and can hardly wait to make even more! This book has a place of honor in my kitchen and I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind taking a little time (decorating cookies is time consumming no matter who's recipes you're using)to make a truly stunning result.

I purchased the book today and I've decided to return it. Kudos to the authors for figuring out how to use fondant for cookies. However, if I tell you to buy fondant, roll it, cut it with the same cookie cutter, adhere it to the cookie with corn syrup and decorate with royal icing -- you don't need to buy the book.

The photography is beautiful, but the book didn't inspire me as other decorating books have. If you are a fondant novice, this may not be the book for you as it lacks detailed instructions. I would also recommend practicing with royal icing before you begin your cookie project. Some designs use royal icing flowers, but there are no instructions about how to make them. These can be purchased at a cake decorating store or you can use other resources to learn to pipe them.

I was looking forward to this book, but it has turned out to be a disappointment.
