I was expecting something more useful. Some of the cookies looked lumpy, and the decorating wasn't of the highest caliber.

I was very much looking forward to receiving this book, but was generally disappointed with it. I agree with the reviewer who said the cover was the best part. Many of the cookie decorations were mundane and rather unprofessional looking. This book didn't offer anything innovative or new.

This cook book is so neat because on one side it has regular everyday cookies, you turn it over and it has hoilday cookies. I have never seen another cook book like this before. There aren't many pictures which was kind of dissapointing, but there are cookie recipes from around the world so that make up for the number of pictures. The neatest recipe seems to be Maple leaves where you actually use maple syrup. I haven't made anything yet beacause I just checked this book out, but I can't wait to make the leaves this fall. There are also some neat bar cookie things that in this book also that would be neat to make for hoilday parties. One of the neatest holiday recipes is called Sledding Teddies, and Sledding Bears. The Sledding Teddies are 3-D which is really cute.

Italian Cookie Encyclopedia 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is both fascinating and frustrating. It is not for the beginner, but experienced cookie bakers will find hundreds of interesting cookies, mostly Italian. Despite the Reader's Digest moniker, it is not a collection of All-American cookies, so take the sub-title of this book seriously.

If you are learning how to bake cookies, you should probably avoid this book. There is absolutely no information on ingredients, equipment, or techniques, nor are there hints or suggestions in the individual recipes. The instructions can generously be described as terse and unhelpful. There is no informational or educational information on making cookies.

If you know your way around a cookie sheet, there are more cookie recipes that you will want to try in this book than all the rest of your cookie books combined. I found literally hundreds of cookies that I wanted to try. The lion's share of recipes are rare, hard to find Italian ones; they are significantly different from american, british, french, german, austrian, etc. cookies (the editorial page lists Florence, Italy as the progenitor). On the down side, many of the recipes require adjustment; I found problems like: doughs that were crumbly and never really came together, too much spreading, seemingly under-baked cookies, dry and crumbly cookies, etc. The recipe titles were also a problem; I am reasonably sure that many of these cookies have popular or traditional names, but an awful lot of them have been given generic names, e.g. "date cookies" or "lime and sunflower seed cookies". I suspect that most problems relate to variable methods of flour measurement; Europeans, like Italians, measure flour by weight, but all recipes in this book list flour by volume in cups. Here, I suspect that the recipes were edited at the word processor and not in the kitchen.

People who already know how to bake cookies will find, in this veritable encyclopedia of mostly Italian cookies, a lifetime of appealing cookie recipes.

I love to bake cookies and have won blue ribbons at the Del Mar Fair here in San Diego. There are many new recipes in this book to try and new ideas for Christmas gifts. I make cookie jars and fill them for gifts. The pictures are great and the recipes easy to follow. Perhaps with all these new recipes I will find a good entry for the fair. I look forward to trying many of the recipes.

Oh boy is this a dangerous book to have on hand if you are planning on dieting! The cookie recipes in this book just sound delicious - almost every recipe sounds worth baking (I have only made one recipe so far and it came out great). There are a many pictures but they put several cookie pictures on one page, there is not a picture next to each recipe. There is a chapter on brownies, a chapter for christmas cookies, to name a couple - just page after page of mouth-watering cookie recipes using some new twists on old favorites as well as including the traditional favorites. There is also a bunch of recipes for things other than cookies - some pies, breads, etc. I can tell that this is going to become one of those tried and true favorite books that you always refer to when you are looking for that perfect recipe - easy to prepare and always tastes wonderful.

I have been using the recipes from this cook book throughout the holiday season and find it's recipes easy and delicious. Mary's Chocolate Chippers are an outstanding tribute to the old Toll House Cookie Recipe. I currently own the first editon of this book. The cover art has changed on this book since the original printing. Mary's full color illustrations adorn each and every page. If you like this book, read Mary Engelbreit's Queen of the Kitchen Cookbook. Her recipe for Double Baked Macaroni and Cheese has become a family favorite! Every recipe is a hit!

I first saw this cookie cookbook at the White House Gift shop in Washington D.C. this summer, but I didn't buy it there as I didn't want to carry a book around all day. I came home and looked it up on Amazon....and there it was from a Marketplace seller so I ordered it. I just love it, it gives a page of info about the Presidents and the first ladies along with their recipe. (Pictures of both also). Starts out with George and Martha & ends up with George & Laura. And the cookie recipes are from early American recipes to great everyday cookies everybody likes. It is spiral bound so it lays flat and the pages are a nice heavyweight paper. It is a delightful addition to my cookbook collection.
