A real Joy 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Sharon Tyler Herbst's Joy of Cookies has just about everything that I look for in a cookbook. The introduction gives a brief history of the cookie and then a detailed description of cookie baking basics, equipment, ingredients, techniques, all accompanied by simple yet clear line drawings. The recipe section itself is organized according to cookie type: bar cookies, drop cookies, etc. The recipes, complete with country of origin and the cookie's name in that language are clear and easy to follow. The book is full of full page color photographs that are clearly labeled. The book is an odd shape and gives the impression that a previous edition may have been larger overall, but that doesn't take away from the book's usefulness. This would make a fine present for a budding baker.

Editorial Review:

Everyone loves a fresh, delicious cookie, and The Joy of Cookies makes cookie baking easy. Full-color photographs and more than 100 taste-tempting recipes put tantalizing cookies within anyone's reach.

Wonderful classic Americana cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This wonderful cookbook features a huge selection of common and obscure cookie and baked good recipes that really touch home with its focus on traditional style American baking. Like many in the Southern Hertigae series, this books has a unique selection of vintage photos and anecdotes sourounding the history of these treasured recipes. The book is now out of print and has become quite a sought after item among collectors of regional American cuisine (as well as those who collect baked goods cookbooks).

Get it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Simply Delicious 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This little volume is one of a collection of single topic cookbooks published by Cook's Illustrated. It quickly became my very favorite cookbook of all time because I love to make cookies for my children and their friends. Due to fanatical kitchen testing of methods and ingredients the editors have offered advice and recipes that are simple and actually work. My favorites are the chocolate chip, peanut butter and oatmeal but there are dozens of others that are equally as good. I consider it a must have for any baker and a perfect small gift also.

No really, these are seriously great recipes. 5 out of 5 stars.

When I was growing up, my mom made the BEST chocolate chip cookies. Yes, every adult thinks that his mom's recipe was the best, but I've now found a recipe that tops even my mom's. I loved hers because they came out really thick and chewy. I'm not a fan of the traditional tollhouse cookies which I find are too flat and boring. Mom said she makes hers with vegetable shortening because butter spreads too much. But butter DOES taste better, and in this book is a recipe that uses butter AND results in a thick, chewy, gorgeous cookie. Sorry Ma, but they got you beat! The book is worth it for this recipe alone. But the Sugar Cookie recipe is also a winner. I ate half the batch as soon as they were cool. YUM! My one criticism is rather ungenerous number of recipes. But I'll take quality over quantity any day.

A crowd pleaser - every time... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There are plenty of cookie books... and this one is worth having. Simply put: the recipies are of high quality and provide consistently good results. From straightforward drop cookies to bars to shaped and rolled. Rich, chocolaty cookies to light, meltaway drops made with confectioners sugar. Something for every taste and occasion.

Good descriptions 4 out of 5 stars.

The little book is adorable, and there's an average of one recipe per 2 pages. The author gives good descriptions of the recipes. There are no pictures, though, so I give it a 4-star. I've tried a few of the recipes, which turned out fine.

Editorial Review:

The author of the enormously popular The Wooden Spoon Bread Book returns to the kitchen to whip up a collection of old-fashioned, homestyle cookies for all occasions. Presenting more than 100 mouthwatering recipes, Marilyn Moore guides the baker through each step of her easy cookie-preparation methods.

A waste of $8. 1 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The book jacket claims to "share the secrets of the Cordon Bleu's famous kitchens." Hardly. Since when are Toll House cookies a secret special recipe?

There are no special techniques taught and the cookie recipes are readily available in any cooking magazine or even in your grandmother's Good Housekeeping cookbook.

A better alternative would be Rose Levy Beranbaum's cookie book or ANY other cookbook!

Classic Recipes 4 out of 5 stars.

Fortunately, this is not another Betty Crocker book; the word margarine is never mentioned. These are classic cookie recipes. Each cookie is beautifully photographed; its recipe states the level of difficulty and preparation time (it always takes me longer). My only regret is that the book is not larger.

This has to be Cookie Monster's favorite recipe book! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I know it's my favorite cookie cookbook. I have used at least half of the recipes so far and there hasn't been a bad cookie in the cookie jar. I've bought several copies since I bought my own to give to my mother and friends. I especially like the fact that there is a picture of each cookie that is in the cookbook. My favorite cookie in the book? I'd have to say the Chocolate Covered Palmiers; well, maybe the Peanut Butter Prints; then there's the Chunky Macadamia Chip Cookies...

Cookbook Lover's Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

I recently visited my daughter in Las Vegas. She has a copy of this book. It was wonderful just leafing through it. There is a picture of each and every tempting cookie in the book. I finally selected the Raspberry Bars with Lemon Icing and made them for guests. Everyone agreed, they were outstanding. I decided I must have this book for my collection! And now I find it is out of print! I will continue to search for it.
