Classic tale 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

An old woman and an old man have no kids, so the old woman makes a gingerbread boy. When she opens the oven, the gingerbread boy jumps out and runs away. He gets chased by the old woman and old man, a cow, a horse, and some farmers out threshing. Eventually, a fox manages to catch the gingerbread boy through cunning, and the fox eats him up. Some kids may find the story quite scary, and may find the unhappy ending a bit disconcerting. But it's a classic tale and quite engaging. The book has about 1300 words.

Great book for kids 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the great books for parents to get for their kids bookshelves. I've really enjoy reading this book when I was kid. It's about a childless old couple who got lonely and the old woman decide to bake herself a gingerbread boy, who ran away once done and kept on running from and cow and a horse, but only to end up getting outsmarted and eaten by the fox. A great classic tale and racy read. You even found yourself running along the gingerbread boy as you read this book.

Editorial Review:

All traces of willpower dissipate somewhere between the rich, moist, and chewy Cheese Cake Brownies; the delicate, crispy Palm Beach Lemon Cookies; and the flaky, tender Portland Fig Cookies, bursting with an unbelievably decadent filling of dried figs, currants, walnuts, and spices. Trust Nick Malgieri, award-winning author, James Beard nominee, and director of the baking program at Peter Kump's Cooking School in New York, to gather a collection of more than 350 cookie recipes that we can't live without.

Each mouthwatering recipe begins with a short introduction. Sometimes Malgieri tells us what the cookies will look and taste like, sometimes he tells us a bit about their origins, and sometimes we meet the people who first shared the recipes with him. In each case he is sure to pique interest. If Malgieri says that nothing is homier or more comforting than his old-fashioned moist Currant Squares, how can we not make them on the next cold, rainy Saturday that comes along? And if he says he helped Pierre Hermes (the famous Parisian pastry chef) make his extremely delicate Orange Tuiles, and that it wasn't difficult, that should be enough impetus for us to make them just to impress our friends.

Malgieri has divided the book into chapters by type of cookie (bar, drop, refrigerator, rolled, molded, piped, filled, etc.), just what we'd expect from a great teacher like him. The chapters begin with hints and tips for the kind of cookie and recipes follow. If we had lots of time, and plenty of hungry friends, we could work our way through the book and arrive triumphant, at the end, master cookie makers, but we're probably more likely to skip around a lot--everything sounds so tempting! From "heavenly" Caramel Pecan Cookies and "elegant" French Vanilla Sables to "delicately flavored" Little Italy Pine Nut Macaroons and "nutty, fragrant" Almond and Hazelnut Biscotti, Malgieri's enthusiasm for his subject is contagious.

Most of the recipes fit on one page, a detail anyone can appreciate because there's no need to mess the book with sticky, buttery fingers. The instructions are detailed when they need to be, such as the exact Ateco plain tube number to use for the piped Butter Almond Fingers, and are beautifully clear and simple when that's all that's necessary, such as with the quick, easy Golden Coconut Macaroons. Even if you think that the last thing you need is another cookie cookbook, think again, because this one is simply chock-full of recipes you'll make, and make again. --Leora Y. Bloom

What a clever approach! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I love to cook with my kids and my friends' kids, but we never step back to think what went into the ingredients. This cute book is filled with fascinating details about where butter, chocolate and salt come from that will be a delight to share the next time we bake cookies. What a great way to help young people see the broader impact of our daily lives!

What a fun book for kids... and adults alike! 5 out of 5 stars.

Having 3 kids of my own, we're always on the look out for books that not only the kids like, but we as parents like as well. This book is one such book. Not only is it fun, but it's full of fun facts. We first checked this out from the local library, and my kids loved it. We bought it from Amazon to add it to our collection, and I don't think it's been back on the shelf.

We even made the cookies as directed by the book, which the kids thought was amazing (we adjusted for altitude...).

Great for a kids' book club 5 out of 5 stars.

My daughter's book club is made up of 8 first and second graders. I picked this book because first of all - everyone likes cookies, right? Secondly, the information and science behind the ingredients was cool, interesting, and well-explained. The girls got a kick out of reading the different ingredient pages and took turns reading the animals' parts as we made a batch of cookies. Plenty of challenging words for the age group, and everyone learned something new, including the parents.

A good book if you like chocolate (and of course you do!) 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 16 people found this review helpful.

If you like chocolate chip cookies, then you'll like this book. You wouldn't think that there could be this many variations on a basic receipe, but there certainly are. I'd recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Chocolate chip cookies are a true American delicacy: at the Toll House restaurant near Boston, Ruth Wakefield invented the very first "toll house" cookies with chopped-up bits of a Nestle's chocolate bar.

Originally inspired by a contest to find the best cookies in the nation, The 47 Best Chocolate Chip Cookies in the World spans the kitchens of America from Muskegon, Michigan, to Costa Mesa, California--and includes delectable tidbits of cookie lore (did you know that Napoleon always carried chocolate into battle with him for quick energy?) The only thing better than this book is a box of chocolate chip cookies!

Sweet Stocking Stuffer 4 out of 5 stars.

If you are looking for a last-minute stocking stuffer or a small gift, the books in the "Christmas at Home" series are a sure bet. The "Just Cookies Cookbook" features an amazing array of cookie recipes that would be extremely suitable for holiday baking, but will definitely taste good during other seasons as well.

The book is divided into eight chapters, each of them more tempting than the next: Holiday Festives, Chocolate Decadence, Delicious Drop Cookies, Pretty to Decorate - Roll and Press Cookies, Bountiful Bars, Marvelous Meringues and Macaroons, Oh-So-Quick and Easy and Mason-Jar Cookie Mixes for Gift-Giving. With the recipes as diverse as Little White Mice, Secret Kiss Cookies, Aggression Cookies, Amnesia Cookies and Polka Dot Oatmeal cookies, you can bet you will find one for anybody on your Christmas list. The recipes come from a number of countries, among them Germany, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Scotland, Mexico and more. At least one of them dates back to 1880s.

All of the recipes that I've tried turned out well and they were easy-to-follow. As with any cookbook, I would have preferred to have photos of the finished cookies included to have as a reference and guide. I also would have liked to have an Index of the contents.

The recipes in this charming little book, "Just Cookies Cookbook," are interspersed with quotes about holidays and joy; and together with the cute, tiny format would truly make this a gift to bring joy to anybody who will receive it.

This festive, ""wintry"" collection of cookie recipes features ideas for everything from traditional Christmas cutouts to unique meringues and jar mixes-all perfect for gift giving.

Editorial Review:

It's out there somewhere--the ultimate chocolate chip cookie, perfectly baked, perfectly formed, heaped with divine chocolate pieces. In fact, the recipe for that dream cookie may well be found nestled in the pages of The Search for the Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie. The story behind this cookbook is intriguing. A small guest house in western Massachusetts (well known for its own home-cooked cookies) sponsored a competition to find the best cookie recipe in America. More than 2,600 recipes flooded in, and over 100 of the best grace the pages of this book. Every imaginable cookie variation is here--yogurt, ice cream, honey, pumpkin--even potato chips! Undoubtedly, many of these recipes are family secrets; others have been concocted through experimentation and chocolate chip innovation. Yet the beauty of all of these tasty treats is their simplicity. All that's required is basic cookie dough, mixed with that extra-special ingredient--be it shredded apple for Apple Orchard Chocolate Chippers, or a small cup of Kahlua for the tempting Kahlua Coconut Chocolate Chip Cookies. Some recipes are strange to say the least. How about Zesty Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies for a truly distinctive cookie? Aside from wonderful recipes, the book also provides handy hints for the storing, mixing, and baking of this favorite indulgence food. --Naomi Gesinger

Quantity, But Not Much Quality 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

It is very useful to have so many cookie recipes in one book at the same time. Even a very good baking book will have, at most a couple of dozen cookies. On the other hand, the results were rather variable and not totally reliable (one person, one oven, one typewriter, what did you expect?). The experienced baker will have a treasure trove of recipes that require a little fine tuning, while the neophyte will probably be met with more than a few disappointments.

The best part of this book is that each recipe has a picture of the cookie.

The bad part is everything else. The biggest problem is the flour measurement: it only lists cups, but does not list an equivalent weight, nor the method of flour measurement (spoon and sweep, scoop and sweep, etc.). The way flour is measured can mean the difference between a perfect cookie and a hockey puck.

The results were variable: cookies that spread too much, cookies that were dry and crumbly, bar cookies that were either over or under baked, instructions where it is not always clear when something is properly baked, etc.

The biggest problem is also its strongest point: all cookies are arranged alphabetically on the first word of the cookie name. This can be a big problem for, say shortbread. If you look under shortbread, you will find nothing. However it can be found under butterscotch, ginger, peanut butter, almond, Brazil nut, cashew, hazelnut, nut, American, and scotch. Buried at the back of the book where you will never find it, is a cross reference list of all recipes organized by cookie type (bar, drop, formed, nonedible, refrigerator, and rolled). It is here that you will have to do research to find the cookie that you want.

Important note for experienced cookie bakers: this a very handy reference book to keep on your bookshelf. Regardless of what type cookie you want, you will probably find it here. Just keep in mind that the recipes have not been vetted, and you should do a couple of trial runs in order to correct the recipes. If you are a professional doing a catering job that requires you to put out a platter of at least 2 dozen types of cookies, I can think of no better resource than this one.

Editorial Review:

Photographs of "creations" cluttered by miscellaneous "stuff" and there are very few good, professional quality samples to be inspired by.

I would definitely pass on recommending this particular book.
