Excellent intro to top-quality, tasteful chocolate. 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Handy international travel/shopping guide and well-focused recipe collection. Very accurate and informative. Compact narrow book format is great for suitcases but a pain for comfortable armchair reading. Elegant, GORGEOUS photos are a big plus, but excessive wasteful "white space" and generous text-spacing (leading) should have been saved instead for a larger coffee-table book. Note that much of the shopping/address info in the 2004 edition reviewed here might need updating, so check if the publisher has done so.

The best journey through the world of chocolate 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

If you love chocolate, and let's face it, most of us do, this book is definitely a must have! This 164-page book, with its spectacular photos by Christopher Hirsheimer of exquisite dishes that will leave your mouth watering, will take you on a complete chocolate journey.

Starting with a condensed history of chocolate and moving on to the properties of cacao leaves and plants, and bringing the reader into modern day, Mr. Lebovitz teaches the reader everything one could ever want to know about chocolate. In fact, the reader will also learn about the health and antioxidant properties of chocolate. Who knew chocolate was actually good for you?

A nice bonus in this book is the factoids presented as sidebar information that Mr. Lebovitz provides the reader, answering all those interesting little-known questions about chocolate we never even considered asking!

Just when it seems the journey through the world of chocolate couldn't get any better, The Great Book of Chocolate continues by offering the reader over 30 of Mr. Lebovitz's favorite chocolate recipes. Among these, the reader can salivate over such culinary desert delights as Double Chocolate Chip Espresso Cookies and Black Bottom Cupcakes.

In summary, The Great Book of Chocolate, written by David Lebovitz, takes the love and appreciation for fine chocolates to a height only before seen by the great wine connoisseurs of the world, only a lot more tasty and fun, and, as Mr. Lebovitz points out, much healthier.

Perfect Summertime Book - A Treat in Itself! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

'Pops! Icy Treats for Everyone' is exactly what you want in a summertime book - creative, fun and accessible. With recipes for frozen treats like Kiwi & Strawberry Pops (with whole slices of kiwi frozen inside), Blueberry Cheesecake Pops, Sugar Pumpkin Pops and Mimosa Pops, there is an abundance of unique, exciting recipes in this book. I was immediately drawn to the Coconut Pops and Peach Cream Pops (made with peach nectar and slices of fruit). Both were satisfying after a long day at work, sitting out on my patio and enjoying a bit of frozen goodness. The coconut pops rivaled Edy's, which are my favorite brand of `freezer section' coconut popsicles. As for the peach cream pops - there was a lot of promise there. These pops were created by layering the nectar/fruit mix with a cream mix made with yogurt and milk. The top layer, with the nectar, was amazing. However, the bottom layer of "peach cream" just wasn't sweet enough. Next time I make these I'll be adding sugar or some other sweetener to the cream mixture. That, I think, would be perfection. (See my site for the coconut recipe.)

All of the recipes are imaginative and easy to follow. Each one is introduced by a short story from the author on the top of the page, and most are accompanied by a mouth watering photo. I especially loved how the author included variations for every recipe. For instance, the recipe for Cookie Dough Pops lists 5 variations, along with instructions, at the bottom of the page. These variations include: Waffles & Ice Cream Pops, Peanut Butter Cookie Pops, Ginger Snap Pops, S'Mores Ice Cream Pops and Cookies & Cream Pops.

Overall this is an excellent book that's certain to add a bit of refreshing fun to your kitchen. You'll learn how to create a variety of tasty treats while also learning how to give your popsicles a more exotic look: layering colors, embedding fresh fruit, and even making your own molds. Have fun!

Chapters include: Healthy Energy Pops, Fruit Juice Pops, Soda Fountain Pops, Cream and Pudding Pops, Coffee and Tea Pops, and Cocktail Pops. Also included are sections on ice pop ingredients, essential tools, techniques and presentation.

Editorial Review:

Pops! introduces a whole new Popsicle one that's fashionable as well as fun. This first-ever ice pop compendium includes more than 100 recipes for pops with unique tastes and flavor combinations, such as Sour Plum, Sweet Martini, Thai Iced Coffee, and Blueberry Cheesecake cool treats today's grown-up kids will be proud to serve at their birthday gatherings, barbecues, and cocktail parties.

And for those whose creative interests stretch beyond the kitchen and into the DIY realm, Pops! offers innovative techniques for making ice molds from found objects and even small toys. With more than 30 full-color photographs and tons of quirky sidebars, Pops! features frosty indulgences for every occasion.

Great Primer 4 out of 5 stars.

The recipes in the book were good, but the best part about the book were the simplest tips. Basic information on how to frost cakes was the most valuable, but also the step-by-step guide on how to make specific theme cakes for birthdays, weddings, showers and whatever else the author dreamed up.

Great Baking...Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I really like this book - I've used it many times and it's been easy to follow. Just made the quiche recipe and it turned out quite nicely. Plenty of enticing pictures plus basic nutrition info. Highly recommend.

This is a good book for people who want to use their KitchenAid mixer more. There are many recipes that the home cook can use and enjoy.

not worth it... 1 out of 5 stars.

This book was a huge disappointment -- I was hoping to find recipes to use with my stand mixer, and did not actually find even one that I'd like to make -- I thought there would be basic bread recipes, classic cakes and cookies -- this seemed so thrown together and random -- not recommended.

BOOK 2 out of 5 stars.

THIS COOKBOOK ISN'T WHAT I EXPECTED. THE SWEETS ARE TOO MUCH WORK , FOR A QUICK DESSERT.
