The text part is great, but I was very disappointed that there are so few photos in the book. I would not have bought if I had known that.

This is a very insightful and well constructed book. There is a TON of information. It does lean heavily on food storage, dedicating nearly 2/3 of its 315 pages to various facets of food (production, preservation, storage). The remaining 100+ pages discuss things like clothing/bedding; Heat, cooking and light, Medical/dental; sanitation/personal care; communication, etc.
There are more than 2 dozen checklists which are very comprehensive and detailed. In my opinion these checklists combined with the nearly 20 pages of resources (pp 295-314) and other books recommended (chapter 31 - Survival Library pp 297-304) make the book worth purchasing. However - this great strength can also be a weakness, make sure the copy you buy is current. The first and second printings were back in the 1980's and don't contain updated resource lists ( a lesson I learned when purchasing Making the Best of Basics by James Talmadge Stevens). The older editions, I suspect are equally useful resources but won't have the very best part of the book.

Best book on smoking that I have ever seen. At first the title sounded odd but after reading it (not just the recipes) I understood where they were coming from. Always refreshing to find an excellent cookbook that doesn't waste money and space on pictures. Smoke and Spice is the only way to cook!

Fantastic book with great recipes. Covers the basics and gets into some more challenging things as well. Smoking takes a little longer - low and slow - but makes for wonderful, tender meat - you can even smoke burgers. There is a section in the front that discusses different types of smokers and the theory behind it. I read about this book on some smoking websites and agree - it's fantastic.

This books covers the fundamentals for anyone wishing to learn how to really barbeque and not just grill. It also has many great recipes, including cooking things you might not normally think about putting in a smoker. Very rarely is there a fancy ingredient, standard kitchen fare but extraordinary food. If you want to learn how to do smoke cooking right, start with this book.

I've had a copy of this book for almost 10 years and I still use it.

First of all, I would like to say that I am not biased against this book because I am vegan. I was vegetarian for 2 years before going vegan, so that has nothing to do with it.
Having said that, I would like to express my opinions.
First, it offends me to no end that the author uses fish in the Puttanesca sauce. She also uses the term "strict, not even fish vegetarian", which is ignorant. Vegetarians DO NOT EAT FISH! By definition, vegetarianism is abstaining from eating the flesh of any animals or eating anything that results from the death of an animal. FISH IS MEAT! Period!
Secondly, I can't put my support behind any book claiming over and over to be healthful that includes dairy and eggs in almost every recipe. From a health standpoint, you can include eggs and dairy in a well balanced diet and still be okay. But not in the LARGE amounts used in these recipes.
Frankly, I detest this book.

Hip. Cool. Fashion-forward. These aren’t adjectives you’d ordinarily think of applying to baked goods.

 

Think again. Not every baker wants to re-create Grandma’s pound cake or cherry pie. Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito certainly didn’t, when they left their advertising careers behind, pooled their life savings, and opened their dream bakery, Baked, in Brooklyn, New York, a few years back. The visions that danced in their heads were of other, brand-new kinds of confections . . .

 

Things like a Malt Ball Cake with Milk Chocolate Frosting, which captures the flavor of their favorite Whoppers candies (and ups the ante with a malted milk ball garnish). Things like spicy Chipotle Cheddar Biscuits that really wake up your taste buds at breakfast time.
