good pasta but... 2 out of 5 stars.

Good pasta, but the fact that they put rabbit in this cookbook is repulsive to me. They couldn't stick with chicken? Gross.

Awesome Little Book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I spent 6 years in Berkeley and I still go back occasionally. The one stop I always make is the Cheeseboard. Not only are they famous for wide cheese and olive selection, but their bakery is out of this world. I remember the days where I would get Brioche and munch on it on the way to class. Or getting the fresh baked sourdough baguettes on the way home from the market. This cookbook describes in detail how to work with the dough, measure out ingredients, and how to bake bread properly. I learned a great deal about baking from this book. I have made a few things (such as the shortbread, sourdough baguette, brioche, muffins, etc) from the book and was very satisfied. Now, this is not for the beginner bakers, I don't think. Also, this is not a speed baking book. I would rate this book as a medium skill book, but with a help of Kitchen Aid mixer and patience, you will be able to get the same great products you find at the Cheeseboard Collective. Definitely recommended for anybody and everybody.

Editorial Review:

Known and loved by locals and travellers alike, the Cheese Board is equal parts bakery, cheese store, pizzeria, and gathering place. For the first time ever, The Cheese Board presents the classic recipes that have made the store one of the San Francisco Bay Area's most acclaimed gourmet destinations. Complete with a history of the shop and neighbourhood, a cheese primer, and all the classic recipes, this book is as rich and varied as the institution that inspired it.

Cookbooks don't get better than this 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I've had this book for years. Its pages have drips and stains, especially on the recipes for angel food cake (infallible), chocolate mayonnaise cake (sounds weird but is wonderful), Portsmouth frosting (to go with the mayo cake), rhubarb pie, sour cream coffeecake, and so on and so on. These recipes are excellent; it's hard to go wrong. There are also step-by-step recipes for things like pie crust, and on those you can't go wrong if you try. Sure, there are newer and glossier baking books out there, like "The Cake Bible" or the Dorie Greenspan's "Baking," both lovely books, but if I were starting out as a baker, this is the one I'd want. And even though now I'm a pretty good cook and not starting out at all, I continue to return to "The Fanny Farmer Baking Book." It would also be a great present for someone interested in learning how to bake.

The delicious treat of homemade cheesecake 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"Cheesecake Extraordinaire" starts off with ingredient notes, equipment, and more; I highly recommend reading the "cheesecake basics" if you aren't familiar with cheesecake-baking. The process is simple, but there are certain steps and aspects to it that are important, and it's the lack of those that so often leads people to think cheesecakes are difficult to make.

The cheesecakes are split into a handful of chapters: beverage-based (most, but not all, of these are based on alcoholic drinks and have a decent amount of alcohol in them), candy and cookie, caramel, chocolate, coconut, custard and spice, fruit, mint, nut, peanut butter, vanilla, and "guilt-free" (i.e., recipes using sugar substitute). Don't get too excited here--most of the recipes are in the first and last chapters, beverage-based and reduced-sugar. For some folks that might be wonderful, but I found it rather limiting. I can't stand the taste of sugar substitutes, and I usually make cheesecake to share with certain friends, some of whom really don't like the taste of alcohol. That severely limits the number of useful recipes in this cookbook for me. It's a personal thing, though--if you'd like those recipes, then those chapters will be more useful to you.

The cheesecakes we've made have certainly tasted absolutely delicious. There's a recipe for individual vanilla cheesecakes that's to-die-for, and a caramel pecan cheesecake that has a delightfully natural and somewhat subtle caramel flavor based primarily in brown sugar. Not a single cheesecake has disappointed.

That said, we have at times left off the frostings or toppings suggested by the book. One wonderful cheesecake recipe included a recipe for frosting that was entirely shortening-based--and I cannot STAND shortening-based frostings. They're just plain nasty. Often a cheesecake would be just as good or better without the suggested toppings; at other times the toppings work quite well (such as for the caramel pecan cheesecake, which is good either way).

I wouldn't call this the ultimate cheesecake cookbook, but I'd certainly call it a very good one. Personally I'd like to see more non-alcoholic and non-sugar-free recipes, and fewer unnecessary toppings (or a higher quality of topping recipes overall). However, depending on your particular tastes in food, your mileage may vary! If you love high-alcohol cheesecakes and don't have a problem with shortening-based icings and such, this may be the perfect cheesecake cookbook for you.

Editorial Review:

Cheesecake Extraordinaire presents 121 recipes for one of the world's most delicious yet easy-to-make treats. From luscious Chocolate Toffee Cheesecake to lighter-than-air Creamy Lemon Cheesecake, each recipe is sure to please even the most discriminating dessert lover.

Buy this before it goes out of print! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have owned this book for years. It is completely reliable, the recipes are pretty simple, and the results are outstanding. I have had failures with other expert books such as the Pie or the Cake Bibles; Rosie's book has never let me down. This is not aimed at diet-conscious bakers or consumers. But when you want to wow someone with flavor and authenticity, when it's time for a splurge, when you want to bake something that tastes like baked goods used to taste, you can turn to this book with confidence.

Yum! Yum! Yum! 5 out of 5 stars.

If you love decadent desserts and baked goods this is the cookbook for you. Rosie (a.k.a. Judy Rosenburg)knows her sweets and really has a way of teaching you how to prepare these wonderful recipes. She is passionate about what she does and it is reflected in this cookbook. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Disappointed...Recipes are written in the metric system 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Dang!!! I just received this book today. I wish that I would have known before my order that the measurements are all in metrics. I also noticed that some of the ingredients listed on a few recipes are not readily available in the US.

A fabulous Australian cupcake cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Yes, it is Australian and (shock! horror!) the measurements are in metric... But the recipes are delicious. The author runs a shop in the Prahran markets in Melbourne and the book is based on recipes sold there - so all tried and true. The recipes range from lamington and hummingbird to classic carrot or a wedding cake of cupcakes. Graham shows how to present the cakes to make them stand out. I bought it for myself and then for two sisters-in-law and we were inspired to go to the shop in the markets.

Editorial Review:

Invite your friends round for Coconut Marshmallow Clouds; perfect a picnic with strawberry butterfly cupcakes. Delight children with Rapunzel Towers or Dinosaur Rocks. The once humble cupcake is now an international style star thanks to gurus like Jennifer Graham, founder of the enormously successful Crabapple Cupcake Bakery. In this temptingly illustrated book she includes utterly indulgent cupcakes for every taste and occasion. Simple step-by-step instructions help you bake delicious cakes but Jennifer believes that the best are made with passion and fun, so there are lots of inspiring tips and decoration ideas to help you create original cupcakes too.

10 of 20 people found this review helpful.

The book is OK, the recipes seem to be good (I haven't tried any yet), but there's a lack of photographs...

I think they are very important for cook books!!

I have a lot of experience in the kitchen, even so it's hard to picture something in your mind if you have never seen it before... lol

Since the cakes, cookies and so on are miniatures, it would be a lot easier to make them knowing the final result (the image, I mean).
