A tomato delicacy... of a book! 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I had a student working on a report (actually it was his mother doing the inquiring, he was contemplating "other things") VEGETABLES.
The last part of the project that was being worked-on was for a recipe. His topic was carrots. I hate to tell you what transpired during the
recipe search, but he did not like carrot cake. The mother insisted that he did not need make it. He did not care whether he had to make
it or not, he sure did not want her to include that recipe!
I wound-up ordering the attached list of books. They came into the library a week ago. What a great little series. Do take the time to
peruse Amazon. They are a real "repast!"

Good for too many tomatoes 3 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

"Its' a truly invaluable trove of culinary historical, and botanical knowledge," wrote Gourmet's book reviewer in 1997, lamenting that Uncommon Fruits and Vegetables was out of print. Now the classic has returned in its original hard cover.Uncommon Fruits and Vegetables was published in 1986 to a fanfare of outstanding reviews: "If there were Emmys or Oscars for cookbooks, Elizabeth Schneider would surely receive one" Boston Globe; "the book has already become a must-have" Bon Appetite; "the timeliest and most truly helpful book of the year," proclaimed Time magazine.

More timely than ever, the visionary volume includes produce now available nationwide -- arugula, mango, kiwi, snow peas, and Swiss chard, as well as less familiar passion fruit, carambola, tamarillo, and chanterelles. Backdrops rich in culinary, botanical, and historical information set the stage for nearly 100 of these produce items. Detailed methods of selection, storage, and preparation lead to more than 400 easy-to-follow recipes designed to bring out the best in each fruit and vegetable.

A hard to find gem 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The Stenciled Strawberry, by the Junior League of Albany, is a true gem of a cookbook. I have owned this cookbook for over 10 years and I consult it before planning dinner, a party or my Christmas baking. The recipes are not confined to just one specialty, but a collection of recipes handed down thru generations, from local restaurants and even some of locals that have gone on to become household names. Now, what truly makes this cookbook a find is that every recipe contains not only simple instructions but indications of how many people each recipe will serve, how much preparation is involved and whether the recipe can be made ahead of time to be served later. This cookbook should be considered a primer for the kitchen!

OK, but overpriced 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought a number of cookbooks from this series at one time, and while they are a nice resource, I think they are overpriced. Possibly I'm spoiled, but I like my cookbooks to have pictures of each recipe. For 50 recipes with neither pictures nor nutritional information, IMHO, $1.50 would be a better price than $5.95. I expected more for my money.

Editorial Review:

Bananas are an almost perfect food. A large, ripe banana contains only 100 calories; is very low in sodium, high in potassium and fibre, and a good source of Vitamins A, B6 and folic acid; is often the first solid food offered to infants; and is one of the last solid foods managed by the aged. Bananas are easy to digest and great for hypoallergenic diets. In short - an almost perfect food! Here are 50 great banana recipes including breakfast, shakes, sandwiches, main dishes, and desserts.

Okay, but nothing special... 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I am a fan of all things pumpkin. I love pumpkin cake, pumpkin pie, pumpkin lattes you name it, if has pumpkin in it, I like it. I purchased this book hoping for some great pumpkin recipes, and I admit I was rather disappointed. For one thing it is rather small: it has 58 pages and is quite narrow. Also, many of the recipes seem to call for whole fresh pumpkin which you cannot get out of season at least where I live. The recipes which call for pumpkin puree are only obvious recipes: pumpkin bread and pie.

Good, but nothing particularly special. Some nice pictures. Okay if you've never read anything about pumpkin and have access to fresh pumpkin.

Cherry Home Companion 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I can't imagine a world without cherries or this great book about how to bring them to your table with style. All of the recipes in the Cherry Home Companion are uncomplicated and yield magnificent results. One of the recipes is an absolute necessity for a memorable brunch: (Chef) Rich Travis' Cherry Mascarpone French Toast hot from the oven with dollops of whipped cream brings raves every time. You'll think you died and went to heaven. (You may even need a private moment, if you know what I mean!) - If you haven't already guessed, I highly recommend this book!

Editorial Review:

A cherry cookbook featuring cherry recipes from the finest restaurants and chefs in Michigan. Stearns brings over 130 tested recipes to your kitchen ranging from a "Simple Cherry Smoothie" to "Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding with Cherries". This book is the definitive guide to cooking with cherries.
