This would make a great gift. Over 100 well written recipes. 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The Walnut Cookbook is filled with recipes that work. No complicated techniques or equipment (beyond a food processor) are needed to reproduce these delightful recipes. There are many desserts and salads, of course, but the appetizers and meat recipes are often brilliant. It is a very handsome trade paperback, with a heavy water-resissitant cover, a scattering of illustrations and photographs, and a beautiful lay-out. This book is a winner

Editorial Review:

Booksellers have come to count on us for lovely books that explore and celebrate the culinary basics -- from chiles to Parmigiano -- and this gorgeous tribute to the indispensable walnut equally sure to please and delight. Walnuts, today hailed as a healthful addition to modem diets, have long been a staple of classic French cooking. This charming book, originally published in France, pays homage to the simple, fabulous walnut in stylish salads and condiments, as a rustic accompaniment to hearty entrees, alongside fresh garden vegetables, in every chic dessert, pastry, and confection imaginable, and even as a flavorful liqueur. Highlighted throughout with lovely color photographs, this cookbook fantastique is destined to become an American classic.

I never thought bean dishes could be this tasty 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 27 people found this review helpful.

I have never been a bean lover but am a vegetarian. So when I discovered More Easy Beans and found so many great recipes, especially for appetizers, I was hooked. I truly believe this is the best bean book I have ever used. Some recipes call for meat, but of course, everyone has a friend who likes red meat. What I really found helpful was the recipes all use a can of beans or allow you to make the beans from scratch. All the recipes I have tried are right on with the cooking times. Other books I have used produce bean mush at the end. I highly recommend More Easy Beans.

Great recipes -- From the Exotic to the Everyday 5 out of 5 stars.

Who knew beans were so versatile? This lively cookbook also provides a wealth of information on bean nutrition, varieties, preparation and availability. I consult it for exciting potluck appetizer recipes like creamy frijole dip and black bean tarts, exotic salads like white bean crab salad and adzuki fruit salad as well as everyday main courses such as chili (for which there are five variations) and wraps.

The recipes are usually quick, the directions are straightforward and the results are tasty and nutritious. This would be a great gift for the health conscious and vegetarians on your gift list!

Honey Crisp. Puritan. Fuji. Twenty-One. Rhode Island Greening. Newtown Pippin. Jerseymac. What's a cook to do with the varieties of apples appearing at supermarkets, orchards, and farmer's markets all over North America?

Apples most often bring to mind sweet desserts, such as pies and cakes, but their superb texture and flavor can also be used to great effect in savory dishes. Grated, sliced, or cubed, an apple adds instant flavor without overwhelming other ingredients.

APPLE COOKBOOK includes more than 150 recipes such as Breakfasts: Sausage and Apple Omelets, Apple Corn Hotcakes, and Apple Raisin Turnovers. Starters: Prosciutto Apple Wedges and Apple Cheese Spread. Soups: Black Bean and Mulligatawny. Salads: Potato Apple Salad, Apple Slaw, and Curried Chicken Salad. Side Dishes: Maple Sweet Potato Casserole and Sausage and Apple Stuffing. Entrees: Cod and Apple Curry, Beef and Apple Deep Dish Pie, and Lamb Stew. And, of course, Desserts: Apple and Raisin Deep Dish Pie, Apple Crumb Pie, Apple Cranberry Meringue Pie, Apple Sauce Tart, Hank Keenan's Peach and Apple Pie, Apple Cream Cheese Tart, French Apple Tart, and Pumpkin-Apple Pie. Top the classic Harvest Apple Pie with a slice of Vermont Cheddar cheese, and the pie still represents the best of American cooking - simple and delicious.

First published in 1984, the Tastemaker Award-winning APPLE COOKBOOK has been completely revised and updated. Gene Shalit of NBC's Today Show says, "bushels of good recipes...this bounty of apple ideas is a pick of the cookbook crop."

Beautiful! 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 36 people found this review helpful.

I came across this book while killing some time at a local bookstore. This is an incredible book to have in your collection, if, for nothing else, the reasons below:

Incredible graphic design. A general rule of thumb--if Chronicle are the publishers of the book, it'll have a fantastic layout. These are the guys who brought to life Michael's devastatingly good vision in the "Tra Vigne" cookbook. Likewise, they also published Georgeanne Brennan's "Potager" and "Mediterranean Herb" cookbooks. The layouts are ALWAYS superb, and each and every release has beautiful photographs and dialogue. Which brings me to my next point.

Great dialogue. Offers a surprisingly thorough history of olive oil. Likewise, it offers a good summary on how to pick, store, and use different types of olive oils, as well as offering a mini glossary of olive oil colloquialisms (i.e., "extra-virgin" and "first-cold pressed", etc.). Also, Peggy's personality and humor come across very well and make the text quite an enjoyable read. This is something that just isn't normally found in many cookbooks who only see things through a step-by-step, color-by-numbers approach to cooking.

Of course, importantly,

Very good recipes. The recipes are extremely tasty. Most are amazingly simple, yet turn out spectacular. The approach is very simple, yet home-y...including ingredients typically found (or readily available) to the novice, home cook.

Get this book and I guarantee that you will not regret its inclusion in your collection!

Editorial Review:

In this photographic journey through the world's olive groves, acclaimed food writer Peggy Knickerbocker and photographer Laurie Smith trace the origins of the oil of the gods. Traveling to the orchards of Greece, Spain, Italy, North Africa, and California, they explore the process of harvesting the fruit and extracting its essence. Readers will savor the exquisite results through recipes that range from toast with tapenade to a lavish feast fit for kings. A culinary adventure complete with photographs and dozens of spectacular recipes, this new edition of the best-selling Olive Oil: From Tree to Table is a graceful and inspirational homage to a divine elixir.

Good information, but you'll need more for hard cider 4 out of 5 stars.
21 of 22 people found this review helpful.

As far as selecting apples, and actually creating cider from them, this book is abount as detailed as it gets. The tables in in that describe US and EU apple types as well as their traits is worth the price alone.

However, if you're looking to make hard (alcoholic) cider the book only takes you half way. Anyone looking to do hard cider should buy a seperate homebrew book that goes into detail about the brew process. Combine it with the information from this book and you'll have some great hard cider.

Editorial Review:

A fully updated and expanded primer for anyone who wants to make cider and for those who just like to drink it.

With the rise in consumer demand for local foods and local food products, and the emergence of more small craft food and beverage producers since this book was originally published in 2000, this revised edition of Cider, Hard and Sweet comes at the right time.

Watson's expanded the section on the history of cider to chronicle lesser-known cider producers such as those in Spain and Asia; broadened the selection of North American cider varieties and European cider apple varieties; provided new cidermaking basics tailored to beginner and intermediate cidermakers with special attention to the new cidermaking equipment available; added new recipes for cooking with cider from notable chefs and bartenders; and added a new chapter about the recent popularity of perry (pear cider) available for purchase today. 50 black & white photographs.

Great Recipes - Horrible Binding 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is full of fabulous recipes. My son especially loves the "Holy Mole" nuts. But the book fell apart almost immediately - I would re-order it as I use it over and over, if it were spiral bound or soft-cover. As it is, I have to keep the pages now separately in a file folder!

Great Party Treats 5 out of 5 stars.

This book has a recipe for every occasion. I do feel that several of the recipes are very similar in terms of the spice mixtures used, but the Balsamic Shellacked Pecan recipe alone is worth the price of the book. A great asset for hostesses or anyone that loves recipes.

Great liitle book 4 out of 5 stars.

This has a lot of old and new nut recipes. Trying to duplicate a great nut snack you had somewhere? Sampson probably has it in this book, or you can take the techniques she sets out and experiment. A good little book that I'm glad to have in my collection.

Nuts about Nuts 5 out of 5 stars.

Like the recipes and the ideas of how to roast nuts. This book started a great adventure for my family into the world of us roasting nuts for a great TV/movie night snack. You can get the whole family involved and the kids love to get involved with the flavors.

Has its moments, but ... 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 10 people found this review helpful.

So much of the advice in here is purely common sense ... and some of it is rather weird. Are there really readers out there who need to be told, when selecting fruits/veggies, to not buy things that are moldy or bruised or rotten? I was hoping for something a bit more profound.

And I couldn't believe my eyes when I read that apples should be kept in the fridge, because they'll go 'mealy' within 48 hours on the counter! Am I the only person in America who keeps apples on the counter for weeks without difficulty? (Well, assuming they don't get eaten up first.)

There is some interesting info on different varieties and cultivars, but even that is available elsewhere, and most of the content is a waste of time/money for anyone who already knows more than the basics.

Editorial Review:

Produce: It's not just apples and oranges anymore. Today's supermarket shelves are stocked with strange, exotic, and delightful items such as quince, jicama, kumquats, amaranth, yuzus, and wing beans. But you don't need a degree in botany to make sense of it all -- just carry along Field Guide to Produce! This practical guide to the world's most popular fruits and vegetables features more than 200 full-color photographs -- plus detailed descriptions, selection tips, and guidelines on peeling, blanching, cooking, and eating.
Award-winning chef Aliza Green describes everything you're likely to find at your local grocery store and farmer's market -- from common cabbages and coconuts to more adventurous fare like chayote and cherimoya. Grocery shopping -- and dinner -- will never be the same again!

Editorial Review:

A classic of reportage, Oranges was first conceived as a short magazine article about oranges and orange juice, but the author kept encountering so much irresistible information that he eventually found that he had in fact written a book. It contains sketches of orange growers, orange botanists, orange pickers, orange packers, early settlers on Florida’s Indian River, the first orange barons, modern concentrate makers, and a fascinating profile of Ben Hill Griffin of Frostproof, Florida who may be the last of the individual orange barons. McPhee’s astonishing book has an almost narrative progression, is immensely readable, and is frequently amusing. Louis XIV hung tapestries of oranges in the halls of Versailles, because oranges and orange trees were the symbols of his nature and his reign. This book, in a sense, is a tapestry of oranges, too—with elements in it that range from the great orangeries of European monarchs to a custom of people in the modern Caribbean who split oranges and clean floors with them, one half in each hand.
