The Greatest Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This cookbook is perfect for anyone whether you eat wild game or not. These recipes can be converted to use pork, chicken and beef. What I really like is that the recipes use spices and different ingredients that I have in my cupboard and I do not have to run to the store for every recipe. Saves time and money and I do not have a bunch of ingredients that I will never use again, because this author incorporates alot of the same spices and ingredients over and over. The recipes are easy to read and do not need hours of preparation. In the back of the book is a wonderful section of savory dishes that compliment the other great recipes in this book. A must cookbook for everyone!!!

Editorial Review:

After thirty years of hosting a hunting and fishing television show and writing outdoor stories, Jimmy Holt has teamed up with outdoor/travel writer and radio personality Vernon Summerlin to create The Great Outdoorsman Cookbook. Here readers will find hundreds of recipes for preparing fish, game, and companion dishes along with Jimmy's and Vernon's anecdotes and tips on fishing, hunting, and cooking.

This cookbook features many special ways to prepare favorite fish and game, from smoking and grilling to cooking in old-fashioned Dutch ovens and modern ovens. There are recipes for fish and venison, "but," says Jimmy Holt, "we've included enough beaver, bear, quail, wild turkey, raccoon, and opossum recipes so that you can prepare these critters if you shoot or trap them."

From soup to desserts and all the trimmings, here is the best cookbook from the best outdoor cooks around the nation.

Best venison cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I've been using Zumbo's cookbook for several years now, and out of all my wild game cookbooks, this is the best. There is a great variety of recipes for all forms of venison. Many recipes use everyday ingredients that most people have on hand all the time. There are also more exotic recipes to try. Plus, Zumbo imparts the secrets of field dressing game, a good section for the hunter himself/herself to read. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cooks venison!

Jim Zumbo: Fired by Remington; Gun Culture Pariah 1 out of 5 stars.

It will be difficult to make any venison recipes when your deer-hunting rifles are banned as "sniper rifles" and your military-style rifles have been confiscated as "assault weapons." If this happens, it will happen with the ideological support of Jim Zumbo, who recently wrote an editorial at Outdoor Life Magazine calling "assault weapons" the tools of terrorists and calling on them to be banned. Too little, too late, he tried to post an apology column, but the damage was done -- already, the Brady Campaign and other anti-hunting, anti-shooting, gun-banning organizations have been quoting his words as support for their agendas.

I won't ever buy another book from Jim Zumbo, and neither should you.

Wild Game Cookbook 5 out of 5 stars.

I have used several receipts in this book. For sure, they were sent in by hunters. The stores sent in by the doners of the recipes are fantastic. I can imagine the situations in which these recipes were used around the bond fires in the hunting camps. You will not be disapponted when you use this book to prepare your favorite game.

Review of a pawn 4 out of 5 stars.

Great book very well written, and easy to locate recipes.

If you have to cook elk, a book you need to have 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My husband forgot to tell me he was a hunter before I married him. Unfortunately for me, he's a good hunter and we've had at least one elk in our freezer every season for years. I'm a city girl and this cookbook has been a lifesaver. The sections on the care and cooking of elk are really useful. The recipes even taste good (considering it's elk). The Ragin' Cajun stew has become a mainstay of my winter cooking rotation.

The rest of the cookbook tends towards hearty midwestern fare -- not exactly Cooking Light, but good on those days when comfort food is a priority.

Editorial Review:

From simple fare for backpacking to fantastic full-course dinners, you'll find it all here-in hundreds of recipes for appetizers, soups, breads, salads, vegetables, pasta, beans, birds, game, fish, and desserts. There's a recipe for ice cream and one for dill pickles. You'll find light and simple fare as well as hearty meals. Read about how to care for wild game from field to freezer and discover dozens of delicious ways to prepare elk, deer, and other wild game. You'll find that recipe you've been looking for-the one your father, your grandmother, or the renowned camp cook always just "threw together." Savor the gourmet tastes and appetites of the many friends of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation from the United Stated and Canada, who share their best dishes in the spirit of swapping a favorite hunting story over a flickering campfire.

great book 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I found this book to be very helpful in the art of sausage making, the book had some very good hints and simple recipes that taste great. I found Limpy also encourages you to alter his recipes to your own taste (I use half the salt and sugar). I can't wait to try his hot dog recipe which looks great and will allow my children to eat healthy hot dogs because I know exactly what is in them. I was originally looking for a duck sausage recipe which was not in the book however, his helpful hints and other recipes allowed me to create my own excellent duck sausage recipe.(imagine a healthy sausage that is low in sodium and fat and taste great).

Limpy knows his stuff! 5 out of 5 stars.

Limpy takes the guess work out of sausage making. This book should be in every kitchen. From simple to complex, Limpy covers it all. I've tried some of the other sausage books out there. I've yet to find anything as good as this. Limpy brings you into the 21st century with his techniques. Some books are so out-dated you could make people sick. Limpy hides no fact or detail. You can trust him to show you how it's supposed to be done. I've been cutting wild game for over 15 years. I've come to rely on Limpy's book to guide a successful wild game processing business / sausage making business. Thanks for the wonderful book Limpy. Also, thanks for all you gave in Vietnam to make sure the rest of us could live free! Great book!

Editorial Review:

Here is how to make all kinds of mouthwatering sausages from varies types of meat. Explained in detail is the entire process: selecting meat types, body parts, field dressing, grinding, making a home smoker, smoking, brining, sausages casings, spices.

For the love of the game -- Food for the pallet and the soul 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Well-cooked game is healthy. It feeds the body and the soul.

I do not myself hunt for deer and venison, since my preferences favor the bird on the wing in flight from a pointing dog. But I join my friends at the venison table when invited, and we'll get some venison at Savernor's in honor of Julia Child once in a while.

It is the right thing to do. My best hunting friends are gourmet cooks. It is the right and best natural solution. I am not ready at my age to give into the common neurosis of the day about meats, etc. Although I do agree that we eat way too much corporate food that is poorly fed and poorly cultivated. It deprives us not only of our nutrition but also of our sense of what it is to be alive ourselves.

I am increasingly supportive of the whole/fresh foods movement, and I think there is no substitute for good game that has lived in the relative wild and has been cared for not only for the food value but also for their spirit and beauty.

This book is full of nice ideas, and can provide many hours of joy and pleasure in preparing that special meal at a special time. My copy came from a good friend who is a gourmet cook. In fact, as I reflect on it, all my shooting friends are gourmets.

If you cannot eat what you kill, then you are not right for the world of guns, dogs, a glass of wine and a day in the field. If you cannot see the humanity and care in all, you are also losing your connections with the touchstones of life. My family has lived on a nice farm in Ohio for about the last 200 years. They raised, loved, cared for and lived side by side with -- and then off of -- the things they could raise or slaughter with their hands.

All of them are great cooks and all of them are sane and upright human beings.

When I sit down to a gourmet dinner with the game or catch of the day, I celebrate my ancestors and often wish we could all return to the simpler days, free of the maddening crowds and the neurotic tendencies of our current age.

Editorial Review:

This cookbook contains nearly 150 delicious recipes using venison (deer, elk, caribou and moose meat) that run the gamut from down-home favorites to gourmet delights. Kate has selected over 100 of her own recipes, as well as favorites from selected wild game chefs and amateur cooks across the country. In Kate's words, the theme on cooking throughout the book is: "Have fun, experiment and, most importantly, enjoy!"

  • Mouth-watering photography and stories & tips from the author make this both an entertaining read and an indispensable reference tool.
  • Find out why venison is so popular, even among non-hunters. It's a healthy, low-fat alternative to beef. With Kate's recipes, you'll enjoy venison more than ever.

Haven't tried a bad recipe from this book yet! Before buying this book I just simply interchanged venison for beef--big mistake. This cookbook gives excellent recipes, which I admit at first I thought they sounded odd, but after trying they turn out great! Have The Complete Venison Cookbook from same authors and love it also!

    Editorial Review:

Venison fans will love this new cookbook, featuring 175 fabulous venison recipes. The Ultimate Venison Cookbook discusses important tips and techniques for dressing, processing and preparing venison for cooking. The recipes cover a wide range of dishes from soups to sausages, to grilled meals and a special section on "Venison Through the Seasons" provides fantastic recipe ideas for cold winter evenings, warm summer days, camping, barbeques and more. Health-conscious chefs will enjoy the expanded coverage on the health benefits of venison and low-carb diets, as well as the selection of low-carb recipes. The comb-bound design of the book makes it easy for lay-flat use in the kitchen, and the easy-to-follow recipes and instructions will have beginners as well as experts producing fantastic, delicious meals.
