This Book Is FILLED With Errors! 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is filled with misleading technical information. I am an enologist, and would NOT recommend it for anyone seriously interested in wine making. Wine textbooks may be more expensive, but they are comprehensive and present the correct, full, scientific information.

Editorial Review:

Understanding Wine Technology was originally written for students of the diploma examination of the Wines & Spirits Education Trust in the United Kingdom, and the Master of Wine examination as set by the Institute of Masters of Wine. However, this is the only book to explain the complexities of the science and technology of wine in simple terms, and therefore fills a gap in the large market of wine information by making wine’s technical mysteries accessible to those with no scientific education. This new edition brings the literature up-to-date, relaying in its plainspoken tradition the recent advances in wine science and technology. The topics covered range from the secrets of the vineyard, the processing of grapes to produce juice, the intricacies of fermentation, stabilization of the resulting wine, treatments, quality control and quality assurance, and bottling.

Homemade Root Beer, Soda and Pop - Two Thumbs Up! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Wow wow wow. If you have ever thought about making your own soda/pop, get this book!!!

It's usually sold out, so I'm glad I finally got a copy! I've read it three times and have made gingerale and rootbeer! Delicious!

Two Thumbs Up!

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an awesome book. It takes some work to get all the ingredients but that is what the internet is for isn't it? So far I have made six of the recipes with my 11 year old niece. They all have turned out very well.

Great if you live on the East Coast! 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

An awesome read with tons of information, but nearly useless because I live in California! The book tells all about gathering roots and herbs and twigs for making great drinks, but we don't have sassafras or birch trees here. Some of the ingredients I can buy dried online, but others are simply impossible without a cross-country drive. Fun to read, but very disappointing, I'd like a few recipes for the west coast folks.

Editorial Review:

This is the only book on the market reviving the traditional American activity of brewing old-fashioned drinks like sarsaparilla and birch beer.

great book 5 out of 5 stars.

Very comprehensive and thorough. Good reading and runs one through the basics and beyond. All good.

For general information only. 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

The Backyard Vinter presented only general information about wine making, not specific enought for an individual wanting to learn how to make wine.

Editorial Review:

Anyone who ever wanted to have homemade wine and never thought they had the space or ability to make it will love this book. The Backyard Vintner is a handy guide to at-home wine making that teaches readers the tips and tricks of the trade. It is perfect for those who want to bring the feeling of wine country right into their own backyard.

The Backyard Vintner teaches readers how to start and maintain a vineyard, providing vital information on topics such as planting, trellising, and proper pruning techniques for grapes; which grape varieties will grow best in every climate or region; and the wines that can be made from each variety. Basic recipes for wines, and advice on topics such as bottling, storing, and serving wines, are also provided.

A Luscious Gift 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book is fantastic. The writing is great and the photos make your mouth water. I am especially excited about the mixes. I have tried them and they are delicious. I plan to make them for Christmas gifts. Use the presentations in the book and you will have a delectable and unique gift. If you don't have time to do this then give the book - even better!

Super Delicious 5 out of 5 stars.

Fantastic chocolate recipes! Some recipes are just right to drink in the morning instead of coffee. Others are richer and desserty.

The pictures are beautiful. The writing style is fun. This is a great gift book. Just be sure you get one for yourself too.

I loved the copy I bought so much that I am buying this book for everyone for Christmas to give with a coffee mug and a great quality chocolate bar. On the card I am going to say, something nutty like "for my sweet or hot friend" (as appropriate)

Editorial Review:

Hot chocolate is not just for kids anymore. The gourmet chocolate market is growing, and Americans are swapping their cocoa mix for real hot chocolate. Made from high-quality bar chocolate instead of a sugary powder, it is the ultimate indulgence. Hot chocolate is featured on the menus of trendy coffeehouses and upscale restaurants everywhere, and with Hot Chocolate anyone can make this gourmet beverage at home. Featuring stylish 4-color design and beautiful photos, this is the perfect gift for any chocolate lover.

Great book about great beers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Even before I visited all the Trappist monasteries in Belgium I have been a big fan of the many Belgian beer styles. This book is an excellent guide to beers you may have already tried and ones you already understand and appreciate. Not only that, but it's beautifully laid out with outstanding photographs.

Editorial Review:

A richly detailed examination of Belgian beer and brewing. Michael Jackson's extraordinary passion for Belgian beer shines through in every aspect of this engaging work, from the personal stories of the people behind the beers to the careful descriptions of their flavors. Revised and updated shortly before his death in August 2007, this work represents the pinnacle of Jackson's meticulous research and masterful writing, presented in a beautifully illustrated visual environment. With a new forward by Brewers Association President Charlie Papazian.

Editorial Review:

Ambitious Brew, the first-ever history of American beer, tells an epic story of American ingenuity and the beverage that became a national standard. Not always America’s drink of choice, beer finally took its top spot in the nation’s glasses when a wave of German immigrants arrived in the mid-nineteenth century and settled in to re-create the beloved biergartens they had left behind. Fifty years later, the American-style lager beer they invented was the nation’s most popular beverage—and brewing was the nation’s fifth-largest industry, ruled over by titans Frederick Pabst and Adolphus Busch. Anti-German sentiments aroused by World War I fed the flames of the temperance movement and brought on Prohibition. After its repeal, brewers replaced flavor with innovations such as flashy marketing and lite beer, setting the stage for the generation of microbrewers whose ambitions would reshape the brew once again.

Grab a glass and a stool as Maureen Ogle pours out the surprising story behind your favorite pint.

have a winetasting party 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 44 people found this review helpful.

this is a great book for anyone wanting to grasp the basics of wine, not knowing where to start! I feel like the author doesn't talk down to readers who might not know alot about wine already. She explains things thoroughly, so you get involved in chapters, but it's not overwhelming, esp. because of the helpful summary of key info at the end of each chapter. The setups for the winetastings were really helpful when I had a winetasting party, everyone could participate, have fun, and learn something.

Editorial Review:

The Martini Book includes dozens of delicious new recipes and even more useful information on creating flawless versions of our most popular and enduring cocktail.

It's classic, sublime, and America's favorite indulgence— the martini. As the symbol for sophistication and "cool," it stands alone. The traditional "dry martini," made with gin and a hint of vermouth, may be the starting point but The Martini Book takes it to the next level, offering hundreds of modern twists in addition to the tried and true original.

Make no mistake, the classic versions of the drink are here, complete with tips for making them perfectly every time. But for those who are more adventurous or looking to expand their drink repertoire, new recipes include the Flirtini, the GreenTeani, the Frosty Mango Martini, the Ginger Snap Martini, and many, many more. There is also practical information on stirring and shaking, a list of essential bar tools (including glassware), and a list of must-have ingredients for any home bar. The beautiful full-color photographs provide inspiration and a guide to making drinks that are as beautiful as they are satisfying.
