valuable guide to juicing fruits and vegetables 5 out of 5 stars.
94 of 96 people found this review helpful.

You won't need a juicer to appreciate this readable reference on juicing (and using) a variety of fruits and vegetables. A medical anthropologist and author of other books on the healing properties of foods, Dr. Heinerman now focuses on juicing. After you choose an ailment (or a fruit or a vegetable), you will respect Dr. Heinerman's scholarship in compiling the beneficial uses of juices. Each chapter on a juice (for instance, "Lettuce Juice") documents its botanical history, description, usage and nutritive values. The anecdotes and testimonials provide strong evidence for the therapeutic qualities of fruits and vegetables -- and their juices. Any juicer you buy will get you started with some good recipes, and this text will augment your choices and combinations of juice. You'll soon be juicing every day, and on into the 21st century. Appendices include helpful information on picking a juicer, uses for the pulp by-product, supplemental commercial products, and recipes

Editorial Review:

This publication shows how raw, natural juices can help maximize health and boost the immune system. A total of 83 juices are discussed.

Gorgeous pictures, in depth content, delicious recipe 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I have had this book for over a year and have tried several of his recipes which all comes out great. It is one of the few cookboos that I have which I use often. The recipes are easy to follow, simple, and most important of all, delicious. I espcially like the stuffed pepper recipe. It is also a book one can sit down to read for leisure. Plus there are lots of tips, not just recipes.

He Can Write AND Cook 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a wonderful culinary book. It's more than a cookbook, as it focuses on various vegetables, etc. of the season, then uses those featured ingredients in several great recipes. If you've ever eaten at Tra Vigne in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena, you can even picture in your mind Michael in the kitchen, and almost taste the restaurant's just-pressed olive oil. If you know anyone who likes to read culinary books (like my mom, who literally reads cookbooks cover to cover, then goes back to earmark certain recipes), you should give them this book for the holidays. It is a beautiful, coffee table-quality, glossy work.

Editorial Review:

This classic cookbook from Food Network star Michael Chiarello is at last available in paperback. It's vintage Chiarello: blending simple yet sophisticated recipes from Napa Valley's famed Tra Vigne restaurant with the grace of Wine Country living and the warmth of his Italian heritage. More than 80 rustic recipes are enhanced by personal stories, detailed descriptions of how to choose ingredients for seasonal perfection and deliciousness, and Chiarello's personal philosophy of life as it relates to cooking—and feeding—those you love.

A definitive guide to Whiskey/Whisky throughout the world 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Why would you buy this book? Why not just drink that old bottle of Jim Beam or Johnny Walker? Because you don't want to make the mistake of buying a bottle of blended Scotch for $500 with a rating of 77/100, like a family friend did. Cost or more aging does not necessarily equate to a higher rating or a higher complexity of taste, body, and finish.

This book is one of the most detailed and comprehensive guides to Whiskey/Whisky in the world. Covering Scotch (single malt and blends), and whiskey from every whiskey producing country such as the United States, Canada, Ireland, Japan, Australia, and Austria, Jim Murray rates spirits by Nose, Taste, Body, and Finish (0 to 25 with a composite of 0 to 100). I would not and have not wasted any of my time or money on purchasing whiskey, without referring to this book. From the rare 50 year old 6,000 British pound bottle of Royal Salute to the $18 dollar bottle of Bourbon, this book covers a vast majority of them.

Each year he bestows upon various distilleries the best of each class of whiskey (World Whisky of the Year, Scotch Single Malt of the Year, Best New Scotch Single Malt of the Year/Single cask, Bourbon of the year, Irish Whisky of the Year, etc).

In the front of the book there is a summary page that shows ratings with the subclassifications (for example, 97 Rating with subheadings of Scotch Single Malt, Bourbon, etc). It is helpful if you're about to go somewhere and try to find 'the best'.

His writing style is straightforward and a pleasure to read. Notes are descriptive and accurate, and drinks are rated from a scale of 0 to 100 (although, I have never seen anything higher than a 97). 0-50, he comments as "Nothing short of absolutely diabolical", whereas 98-100 is "Better than anything I've ever tasted". He also talks about the latest trends in the industry and each installment of the book rates more and more whiskey, each subsequent year.

Even though some of the more obscure barrels of bourbon are not in this guide (for example, Pappy van Winkle 18 year old), it's still a worthwhile investment.

Before you buy that $200 dollar of bourbon or that $1,500 bottle of Macallan, you need to read this book. It WILL save you time, aggravation and money. I am still searchin' for a good ol' bottle of George T. Stagg (97/100).

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Editorial Review:

This established market leader is published well in time for the Christmas whiskey-buying surge and takes account of all the latest developments in the world of the wee dram. What makes this book such a tour de force, however, is the tasting notes on hundreds and hundreds of different brands. The author has traveled around the world checking out whiskey from distilleries as far-flung as Argentina and Thailand, as well as the world-leaders in Scotland, Ireland, the United States and Japan. In terms of whiskey, this is the gospel!

Superb Tea Primer 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I recently have fallen in love with loose-leaf tea. It has become so much of an obsession that I have given my coffee maker away, and designated a space on our kitchen counter the "Tea Zone".

In my quest for more knowledge about tea, I found the Tea Companion. It has a great concise introduction to tea, including history, production and appreciation. The second part of the book contains regional information, which I found very interesting.

This book is a must read for anybody who is interested in loose-leaf teas. Gotta Run; My Russian Caravan awaits.

great overview of how a lawyer became a wine king 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Good overview describing how robert parker became robert parker. No big nuggets, but well written and good insights and background since parker clearly cooperated with the writer, who is a wine critic in her own right and thus understands the business. Informative and a good story while also telling you how the wine industry works and how it evolved from the days of Almaden to today.

Editorial Review:

This is the story of how an American lawyer raised on Coca-Cola caused a revolution in the way wines around the globe are made, sold, and talked about.

The world's most influential wine critic, Robert M. Parker, Jr., has dominated the international wine community for the last quarter century, embodying the triumph of American taste. Using Parker's story as a springboard, author Elin McCoy offers an authoritative and unparalleled insider's view of the eccentric personalities, bitter feuds, controversies, and secrets of the wine world. She explains how reputations are made and how and why critics agree and disagree, and she tracks the startling ways wines are judged, promoted, made, and sold -- while painting a fascinating portrait of a modern-day cultural colossus who revolutionized the way the world thinks about wine.

Every cook should own this 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

For the past 4-5 years I've been trying to learn how to cook and of all the cooking books I have, this is one that is ALWAYS stuck between my desk and my kitchen for easy grabbing. No other book as been as handy as this, with the exception of my substitution book that sits right next to it.

It's also a great idea to include this in start kits for new cooks. Anytime one of my friends asks me what books they should get as starters I recommend this.

Resource Addition 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I added this book to my growing wine making reference collection. As an amateur, I am busy gathering additional knowledge as I hone my winemaking skills. I used the "Raspberry Liquor" recipe to spruce up a batch of very dry and unsweetened Raspberry wine for my annual holiday wine creation. Good dry semi-sweet result.

Excellent condition and fast delivery! Good seller. 5 out of 5 stars.

Excellent condition and fast delivery! Good seller. Helpful book and very easy to read.

Editorial Review:

Written expressly for beginning and advanced amateurs, this guide explores home winemaking in practical terms, focusing on the latest fermentation techniques of both red and white wine grapes. Detailed information on equipment, supplies, and mistakes to avoid will make getting started easy. Advanced winemakers will appreciate full explanations of sophisticated topics such as malolactic fermentation, extended maceration sparkling wines, and chemical testing. Also included in the new edition is information on the use of oak barrels. Unlike other winemaking manuals, this is devoted entirely to wine made with grapes instead of fruit wines.

A great beer book for beer lovers, road trippers and anyone who likes to read... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've recently gotten curious about the world of beer and brewing because of my boyfriend (and because I LOVE road trips!) so he got Red, White and Brew and I decided to read it. It is fascinating book about the interesting people and fun stories behind the people who make our beer around the country. Each chapter is totally different and you don't have to be a beer-head (or even a guy!) to enjoy it! I am definitely going to buy a copy for my dad and brother and my grandma too! I HIGHLY recommend!

Editorial Review:

Red, White, and Brew is the ultimate beer run across the United States, during which Brian Yaeger visits fourteen breweries of various sizes and talks to founders, owners, brewmasters, consumers, and anyone else he meets on his odyssey and who enjoys the making, tasting, and appreciating of brews.

Red, White, and Brew pursues the roots of brewers who brought their craft with them from their homeland and investigates how the tradition is faring today and where it may head in the future. Covering everything from fifth-generation family-run brewing companies to first-wave microbreweries, this book is a travelogue, guide, and genealogical study of beer families and homebrewers from Portland, Maine, to Portland, Oregon. It is filled with eclectic characters and shrewd businesspeople who populate an industry as old as the New World, and who produce liquid philanthropy, one keg at a time.

Editorial Review:

The Beer Renaissance is in full swing, and home brewing has never been more popular. According to the American Homebrewers Association, there are currently 1.2 million home brewers in the country, and their numbers keep rising. Tired of the stale ale, bland beer and lackadaisical lagers mass-produced by the commercial labels, Americans are discovering the many advantages of brewing their own batch of that beloved beverage: superior aroma, color, body and flavor.

For both amateur alchemists eager to tap into this burgeoning field and seasoned zymurgists looking to improve their brews, The Brewmaster's Bible is the ultimate resource. Its features include: Updated data on liquid yeasts, which have become a hot topic for brewers; 30 recipes in each of the classic beer styles of Germany, Belgium, Britain and the U.S.; extensive profiles of grains, malts, adjuncts, additives and sanitizers; recipe formulation charts in an easy-to-read spreadsheet format; detailed water analyses for more than 25 cities and 6 bottled waters; directories to hundreds of shops; and much more.
