Editorial Review:

Written by a vintner and science editor with twenty-five years experience, The Way to Make Wine is the most readable and reliable handbook among the many winemaking guides. In engaging conversational prose, Sheridan Warrick shows that making your own wine is not only easy, but also fun. Geared to everyday wine lovers who want to drink well, save money, and impress their friends, this book reveals everything needed to make delicious wines--both reds and whites--from start to finish.
Warrick demystifies winemaking by explaining the nuts and bolts and demonstrating that if readers can replace a faucet washer or cook a pasta sauce, they can make food-friendly wines that cost less than the bottles they're now opening. He enables amateur vintners to equip a home winery, procure top-quality grapes, run a flawless fermentation, and enjoy their wine--its nose, its body, and finish--with renewed awareness and appreciation. At the same time, the author points experienced home vintners to new skills, describing top wineries' techniques. Rich with insiders' know-how, this book also divulges the many advances that have been made in the past few decades and makes clear that, with enologists' innovations, home winemaking is easier than ever. With straightforward illustrations of key steps, this book offers one-stop shopping for anyone who's ever dreamed of making table wines at home.
* two step-by-step sections: one for beginners, one for experienced home vintners
* sidebars offer quick tips and key elements of winemaking lore
* includes the only clear and comprehensive guide to minimizing the use of sulfites in wine
* section on suppliers and labs provides a wealth of information on sources of fine wine grapes

Not what I expected 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Basically this book is a diary of Michael Tucker's time in Umbria and the things they ate while they were there. While it is midly entertaining - it's definately not the best travelogue I've ever read. Also I thought author came off as condesending which was a real turn off to read.

Editorial Review:

The actor Michael Tucker and his wife, the actress Jill Eikenberry, having sent their last child off to college, were vacationing in Italy when they happened upon a small cottage nestled in the Umbrian countryside. The three-hundred-and-fifty-year-old Rustico sat perched on a hill in the verdant Spoleto valley amid an olive grove and fruit trees of every kind. For the Tuckers, it was literally love at first sight, and the couple purchased the house without testing the water pressure or checking for signs of termites. Shedding the vestiges of their American life, Michael and Jill endeavored to learn the language, understand the nuances of Italian culture, and build a home in this new chapter of their lives. Both a celebration of a good marriage and a careful study of the nature of home, Living in a Foreign Language is a gorgeous, organic travelogue written with an epicurean’s delight in detail and a gourmand’s appreciation for all things fine.

Great read, great ideas! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm enjoying this book immensely. This is my second home brewing book (Papazian was the first, about 15 years ago). Like Papazian, "Radical Brewing" includes plenty of lore in addition to hard core brewing info. And like Papazian this book has lots of humor in it. But Mosher's book is much more current, in terms of both information and viewpoint. And the humor is sardonic where Papazian's humor tends to be more goofy and quaint.
If anything "Radical Brewing" is slightly less practical than "The Joy of Homebrewing." It seems like Mosher focuses on giving the reader inspiration rather than step-by-step instructions, which is very wise considering how individualized each batch of homebrew is. Papazian has a certain recipe mentality, where Mosher is instead setting forth ideas and techniques. Good stuff, particularly for the intermediate or advanced brewer. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Radical Brewing takes a hip and creative look at beer brewing, presented with a graphically appealing two-color layout.

A simple juicing book with TONS of recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
62 of 62 people found this review helpful.

This is a nice, straight forward juicing book that offers some "extras." It's simple, but it has an extensive array of recipes and leaves no stone unturned.

There's a section on produce that tells the reader what each item is good for (which vitamins and minerals it contains) and how to buy and store them.

The "Juiceman" also includes a crash course in all the nutrients we need to be healthy, WHAT we need them for, and in which juices we can find them in.

At the end of the book, the author includes a Q&A section and tips and points on how to make juicing an integral part of your life and what to eat to compliment a diet chock full of fresh juices.

All in all, this is a great book. It may not appeal to some who are in search of something a little more fancy, with a more complex layout. But, everything considered, it's a sure bet.

Editorial Review:

If you want to learn about wines of the world and advance your comprehension of wine production, grape varieties, appellations, and individual wineries, understand the factors (such as location, soil, climate, and methods of viticulture) that affect the taste and nose, and visit your wine shop with a list of quality wines to explore, Tom Stevenson is the man to read. Author of 12 books (including Champagne and The Millennium Champagne & Sparkling Wine Guide), three-time winner of the Wine Writer of the Year award, and columnist for Wine magazine, Stevenson has the gift of taking vast quantities of knowledge and experience and translating them into lucid, sparkling prose, easily graspable by the novice, yet still interesting and instructive to the connoisseur.

Arranged geographically, with nearly 100 maps, profiles on top producers, and valuable Author's Choice charts for each region, the Wine Encyclopedia covers the wines of Europe (from Great Britain and Switzerland to Southeast Europe, Greece, and the Levant), as well as wines from North and South Africa, North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia. In addition, there's a guide to wine and food (pairing fois gras with a Champagne or Sauterne, for example, and claret or Cabernet Sauvignon with beef), a guide to wine flavors (making sense of descriptors such as fig, gooseberry, violet, and hay), a list of good vintages, and a glossary of tasting and technical terms, distinguishing "cheesy" and "chewy" from "creamy" and "corked." Enhanced by beautiful pictures of vineyards, wine labels, and Stevenson himself demonstrating the art of wine tasting, from examining and nosing the wine to spitting it out, this a visually beautiful as well as an informative volume. As sumptuous as an elegant Tuscan Barolo, as rewarding as a Sarget de Gruaud-Larose from Bordeaux, as pleasing as a Ferreira port, the Sotheby Wine Encyclopedia is a remarkable tome of oenological erudition. --Stephanie Gold

enthusiast's dream 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I was first introduced to Mr. Julyan's exciting syllabus through the Court of Master Sommelier's examination process. As both a student of wine and an educator in the hospitality sect, I have found his brief yet thorough writing to be an indispensable reference guide when educating my colleagues at both of my establishments.

For the home enthusiast or even someone just curious about broadening their horizons into a larger world of viticulture and enology, Mr. Julyan's writing broaches the sometimes forboding subject of the old world in an extremely approachable manner, the new world with a sense of excitement and the realms of bartending with both sensetivity toward tradition and the modern mixologist.

For the wine-savvy diner, this book provides valuable insight into the realm of "what should be going on" in the parts of the restaurant world you don't get to see. As a 20 year restaurant veteran, I also greatly appreciated Mr. Julyan's explainations of the difference between the should be's of service versus the nescessary practicality of providing service within the specific constraints of each establishment's environment and ability.

Both an exceptional value and a more approachable read than the sometimes overtly technical wine tomes available, I strongly recommend this to anyone looking to increase the caliber of thier sales and service training in their hospitality career or to soak in a little more than just grape-juice!

Clear and Inspiring How-To 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book looking for a guide to grow hops... It is certainly that, and more. It covers varieties and where they grow, how to treat the soil, where to plant, what how to build an effective trellis etc... AND it covers how to dry the fresh hops in preparation for use in a brew... how to build an oast (which is the drying structure)... And it does all of this in a very approachable way.

Bonus for me - was that it covers the same for the cultivation, harvest, and treatment (malting and drying) of barley ... And has a nice run-down of brewing herbs and their uses (how much of what herb to use in the brew - and when to add it)...

Just noticed - the cover says:

How to easily grow prepare, and use your own Hops, Malts, and Brewing Herbs

yeah ... that's about right. ;)
Inspiring.

Green is Great 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I had read several accounts of Ann Wigmore's life changing experience with wheatgrass and other fresh fruits, so I decided to give it a try. With my first wheatgrass kit, I got this book. I was so impressed, that I gave it to a friend of my girlfriend, who was dying from cancer along with a tray of wheatgrass and my old hand juicer. A year later, she's still around and I'm buying myself another copy of Ann's book.

Comprehensive book on growing/consuming great wheatgrass 4 out of 5 stars.

One of the two best books available on growing, consuming and knowing how wheat works and the benefits of drinking the juice or eating the wheatgrass or sprouted wheat berries or making and consuming the beverage made from wheat berries.

Try it! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book to learn from, it is not loaded with page after page of pictures and little information on how to.

I found it extreamly helpful for what I was doing.

need more information 3 out of 5 stars.

This book was very informative in the health aspect. Ann Wigmoore made the medicinal qualities of wheatgrass very easy to follow, but the actually growing process was very brief. I was looking to start growing wheatgrass in my kitchen. I started small batches here and there. I ran in to different problem's with all of them. The book was very brief in the sense that it did not touch on problem solving. There is a number in the back of the book you can call of you run into problems growing. Well I called twice in a matter of two week's, and did not recieve a call back. Overall this book is very useful if your just looking to learn the health benifit's of wheatgrass, but buy a more informative book if you are interested in growing it yourself. A process you should consider. It is inexpensive, and so important to one's health.

This is the best.... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the very best book on wines from this reagon that I have ever read.

If you are interested on wines from Burgundy - just get it. It is well worth the money.

A good example is that there is a very detailed section on wines from Chablis. Chablis is perhaps a small part of Burgundy and yet this book treats these wines in great detail... if it does this good a job on Chablis then imagine what a job is does on Cote d'or for example.

Editorial Review:

Ten years after the publication of the highly acclaimed, award-winning Côte D'Or: A Celebration of the Great Wines of Burgundy, the "Bible of Burgundy," Clive Coates now offers this thoroughly revised and updated sequel. This long-awaited work details all the major vintages from 2006 back to 1959 and includes thousands of recent tasting notes of the top wines. All-new chapters on Chablis and Côte Chalonnaise replace the previous volume's domaine profiles. Coates, a Master of Wine who has spent much of the last thirty years in Burgundy, considers it to be the most exciting, complex, and intractable wine region in the world, and the one most likely to yield fine wines of elegance and finesse. This book is an indispensable guide for amateur and professional alike by one of the world's leading wine experts, writing with his habitual expertise, lucidity, and unequaled firsthand knowledge.
