inspiring book 5 out of 5 stars.

I read many company books. This is one of the gems. Howard did a fantastic job in writing the history of Starbucks, its root, its spirit, and its amazing achievement.

There have been many coffee vendors. Starbucks sprinted from the pack. It actually revolutionized the coffee industry. While the business world has been looking for the next new hi-tech inventions, Howard creatively rejuvenated the coffee drinks by relentlessly pursuing the quality the culture and the experience. He did the mission-impossible in such a traditional industry. After reading this book, you will never look at Starbucks the same way. Yes, you realize that passion and quality can make a huge difference in this crowded world.

the starbucks story 5 out of 5 stars.

A fascinating look at the history of the cocktail 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I love this book. But then again, I am addicted to his WSJ column and it is for that reason alone that I still retain my subscription. For those of you who are regular readers of Mr Felten's WSJ column, rest assured there is a significant amount of new material in this book. Although it contains no new drink recipes, it appears to include everything that didn't make it past the WSJ editor. In other words, there are new stories and anecdotes for each cocktail supported by Mr Felten's extensive research. I have read the book several times and look forward to reading it several more. Well done Mr Felten.

Editorial Review:

Based on the popular feature in the Saturday Wall Street Journal, How's Your Drink illuminates the culture of the cocktail. Cocktails are back after decades of decline, but the literature and lore of the classics has been missing. John F. Kennedy played nuclear brinksmanship with a gin and tonic in his hand. Teddy Roosevelt took the witness stand to testify that six mint juleps over the course of his presidency did not make him a drunk. Ernest Hemingway and Raymond Chandler both did their part to promote the gimlet. Fighting men mixed drinks with whatever liquor could be scavenged between barrages, raising glasses to celebrate victory and to ease the pain of defeat. Eric Felten tells all of these stories and many more, and also offers exhaustively researched cocktail recipes. How’s Your Drink is an essential addition to the literature of spirits and a fantastic holiday gift for husbands and fathers.

A Must Have 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Absolutely the best camp cookbook I have had yet. Recipes are simple and easy to understand. Ingredients can all be found at any supermarket, even small ones. The breakfast section alone is worth the price of the book.(These cooks really liked a big breakfast) The book is durable and there are enough recipes to last the average camper years before having to repeat a meal. Most meals will feed 4 to 6 easily and the additional stories, tips and photos are a great bonus!

Great Ideas! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book offers some interesting background and stories plus lots of great recipes - mainly for dutch ovens but also for skillet cooking.

History buffs! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Not what I was expecting. There are some great recipes, but the real appeal of this book is the history. The photos and stories alone make it worth the price. Warning! If you aren't cooking for a large group you'll have to scale down a lot of the recipes.

Editorial Review:

The National Museum of Forest Service History presents a charming cookbook that celebrates decades of camp cooking by countless Forest Service agents in the field.

Appreciating wine more by understanding its politics 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It is said that to really appreciate wine, one must understand its context. When some talk of "context", they often focus on what is in the bottle, such as a wine's varietal makeup, the vineyard from which its fruit was sourced, and/or the vintage which serves to describe the growing season. Even still, there are some who extend context further to include the historical and cultural influences shaping a wine, specifically those factors that have served to guide viticulturists and enologists in a singular fashion within a particular region.

Tyler Colman has now broadened this notion of context with Wine Politics: How Governments, Environmentalists, Mobsters and Critics Influence the Wines We Drink, a book that should appeal to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of wine.

If you have ever wondered why certain wines show up on some store shelves but not others, or why specific wines appear on certain restaurant menus while others do not, then you should read Wine Politics. The book not only explains how politics influence the distribution of wine here in the U.S., but also reveals how these same forces direct each bottle's production and eventual consumption. The best description of this book is offered by the author in Chapter 1::

"In this book I follow the travels that a bottle of wine takes from the vineyard to the dining-room table. Along the way it may encounter flying winemakers, humble vignerons, dull regulators, passionate activists, and powerful critics. I tell the neglected backstory of wine, which, as with Hollywood movies, can often be more interesting than the finished product."

Tyler Colman, a.k.a. Dr. Vino, approaches this topic by following the wine histories of France and the U.S., with a focus on winemaking in each country's respective, and most venerable, region, Bordeaux and Napa. This comparative treatment offers the reader a variety of useful insights and revelations throughout the book. Tyler extends his geographic coverage to include other regions of the world, including mentions of specific politics, policies, and practices in the Pacific Northwest.

I enjoyed the second half of the book the most, which includes chapters such as, "Who Controls Your Palate?", and, "Greens, Gripes, and Grapes". What Michael Pollan did in such great detail for food in "The Omnivore's Dilemma", Tyler Colman has now provided for wine, albeit at a cursory level, in these two chapters. For it is in chapters five and six that Tyler exposes the downside of the industrialization of wine, while contrasting this approach with the upside of "natural" winemaking practices.

After reading Tyler's book, I now have a deeper understanding of the public policies that influence the wines I am able to buy and ultimately enjoy at my table. As a result, I am a much more informed consumer, citizen, and most importantly, voter. I highly recommend Wine Politics as required reading for anyone seeking to enlarge their understanding of wine.

If Wine Politics is any indication of the path Tyler Colman is on with future books, then I am confident he will continue to increase my appreciation for wine in the years ahead.

Editorial Review:

After reading this intriguing book, a glass of wine will be more than hints of blackberries or truffles on the palate. Written by the author of the popular, award-winning website DrVino.com, Wine Politics exposes a little-known but extremely influential aspect of the wine business--the politics behind it. Tyler Colman systematically explains how politics affects what we can buy, how much it costs, how it tastes, what appears on labels, and more. He offers an insightful comparative view of wine-making in Napa and Bordeaux, tracing the different paths American and French wines take as they travel from vineyard to dining room table. Colman also explores globalization in the wine business and illuminates the role of behind-the-scenes players such as governments, distributors, and prominent critics who wield enormous clout. Throughout, Wine Politics reveals just how deeply politics matters-- right down to the taste of the wine in your glass tonight.

I've researched others and this one is great 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this as a gift and just received it. I think its great, the layout of the journal pages is simple and straightforward. There is plenty of room for writing your review - so many journals will have one line to fill in 'taste' (isn't that what its all about?). And there is an open page to the left of each journal page that lets you paste in wine labels. I'm too lazy to peel off labels and the pages are so nicely designed that it wouldn't look bad or look like anything is missing if you didn't include a label. Some journals have a giant open spot on the page itself. It has a very simple scoring system with just 1 - 5 stars, and just circle what applies in a couple of different categories.

Its great as a gift, its a very nice looking book, hard cover, great design. I highly recommend it.

Excellent in every way but one 4 out of 5 stars.

After owning and using this book for some time I felt compelled to share my thoughts. It's every bit as good as the other reviewers say but has one shortcoming that I haven't seen mentioned: the font is very, very small. Years ago I could have read it in dim light but now I need bright light and a carefully adjusted distance. For those for whom it makes a difference, you may want to consider a more easily read text such as Drinkology: The Art and Science of the Cocktail, which hasn't gathered quite as many accolades but is actually very similar and features a bigger font.

Editorial Review:

Ultimate Bar Book is the first and only guide to classic and new drink recipes. Loaded with essential-to-know topics such as barware, tools, and mixing tips, this book has it all. As a mistress of mixology, the author has the classics down to a T the Martini, the Bloody Mary, plus the many variations (the Dirty Martini, the Virgin Mary). And then there are all the creative new elixirs the author brings to the table, like the Tasmanian Twister Cocktail or the Citron Sparkler. Illustrations show precisely what type of glass should be used for each drink. With dozens of recipes for garnishes, rims, infusions, and syrups; punches, gelatin shooters, hot drinks, and non-alcoholic beverages; and let's not forget an essential selection of hangover remedies, Ultimate Bar Book is nothing short of top-shelf.

Luscious Lemon! 5 out of 5 stars.

Great For Liqueur Latecomers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'll admit it. I was a little scared of liqueurs. Those fancy-dan bottles, those sweet gooey snifters of purple stuff. Yikes! After taking the plunge and trying a few of the recipes in Luscious Liqueurs, I've now seen the light. First of all, almost anything can be in a liqueur: tart lemon in a Limoncello, hazlenut in the Heroic, or even horseradish in the Hot Horse. You heard me. Horseradish! You'll never think of Bloody Marys the same way. Second, liqueurs aren't built out of some mysterious gunk. Vodka is the simple base for most of the liqueurs in the book. And fresh ingredients bring a lively taste to each drink I've tried. Liqueurs aren't scary, they are great. They are fun and easy to make... and drink... and share with friends. (And then... talk your friends into making a different one for you and share the love!)

Editorial Review:

In this collection of 50 easy recipes, illustrated with gorgeous color photos, master mixologist A.J. Rathbun shows readers how to create their own liqueurs - infusions that meld liquor with fruit, herbs, and spices - for any occasion. Chapters include citrus mixes such as Limoncello and Mandarino; fruit flavors such as A Fair Pear; nutty/spicy liqueurs such as Anisetter and Basil Grappa; exotic mixtures such as Persephonia; and sweet treats such as Mocha Cream. The introduction covers all the basic rules, tips, and necessary tools, as well as information on gift-giving, storing, and packaging, and cocktail suggestions.

Editorial Review:

An original book on the craft of mixology is a rare gem. Gary Regan’s The Joy of Mixology is such a gem, one whose genius lies in Regan’s breakthrough system for categorizing drinks that helps bartenders—both professionals and amateurs alike—not only to remember drink recipes but also to invent their own.

For example, once you understand that the Margarita is a member of the New Orleans Sour Family, you’ll instantly see that a Kamikaze is just a vodka-based Margarita; a Cosmopolitan follows the same formula, with some cranberry juice thrown in for color. Similarly, the Manhattan and the Rob Roy, both members of the French-Italian family, are variations on the whiskey-vermouth-bitters formula.

In this way Regan brings a whole new understanding to the world of cocktails and how to make them. Not only will you learn how to make standard cocktails, you’ll actually learn to feel your way through making a drink, thereby attaining the skills needed to create concoctions of your own. And as Regan explains methods for mixing drinks, how to choose bartenders’ wares and select spirits and liqueurs, and the origins of many cocktails, you’ll feel as though you’re behind the bar with him, learning from a master. Plus, his charming and detailed history of mixed drinks raises this far above the standard cocktail guide fare.

With more than 350 drink recipes, The Joy of Mixology is the ultimate bar guide. Ground-breaking and authoritative, it’s a must-have for anyone interested in the craft of the cocktail.
