A great beer book for beer lovers, road trippers and anyone who likes to read... 5 out of 5 stars.

I've recently gotten curious about the world of beer and brewing because of my boyfriend (and because I LOVE road trips!) so he got Red, White and Brew and I decided to read it. It is fascinating book about the interesting people and fun stories behind the people who make our beer around the country. Each chapter is totally different and you don't have to be a beer-head (or even a guy!) to enjoy it! I am definitely going to buy a copy for my dad and brother and my grandma too! I HIGHLY recommend!

The Imbible is a riot! I thoroughly enjoy learning while drinking, and Alex's book certainly promotes both. The only downsides to the book are that (1) it has contributed to a sharp decline in my GPA this semester and (2) it could use a more durable cover: having been passed around a fraternity house for several weeks it is beginning to fray at the edges. The reality, however, is that both these downsides are in fact positive... and I'll certainly drink to that.

This book is one of those flashy glossy books with very little content. This is not for the all grain brewer, maybe for the extract people it could be of interest. Recipes are very basic and common. Dry writing style but lots of cozy pictures of people drinking beer.

This is a large, coffee-table sized book on nice, glossy paper with beautiful photos and graphics. Those of you who know Jackson as a beer and scotch writer need no introduction to him, but for those of you who won't, Jackson has authored numerous books on single-malt whisky and beer and starred in and wrote the "The Beer Hunter" TV series, where he travelled the world in search of great beers.

Jackson puts his vast knowledge of beer to work in this very attractive work. There is a tremendous amount of enjoyable detail, history, tasting notes, and other information in this book. In contrast to some of his other books, this one is more topically organized--that is, there are sections on many of the different types and styles of beers, "Winter Warmers" (i.e., the bock beers), "Strong Ales," and "Belgian Wheats"-- and so on. Also interestingly, the later sections are on picking beers to go well with foods, and there are separate sections on seafood, beef, poultry, etc. These sections take up perhaps one-third of the book.

The layout and writing is well organized and fits well with the graphics on each page. Each section has an introductory paragraph or two to introduce the style of beer, giving the basic facts and some history. Then the rest of the area on each page shows photos of prominent examples of each beer with descriptions, including historical info on the brewery and tasting notes. Over 450 important beers are pictured and discussed, making this a veritable treasure trove of fun information on all types of beer. Overall another great beer book from Jackson, and if I had to pick one beer book from him to have, this would probably be it.

I found this book to be fun and informative to read. I am an avid homebrewer that loves to experiment. This book gives a useful account about how the beers of rural Belgium came to be. In particular, the author explores how culture and geography combined to create the beers of the region.

For me the best chapter was "A Word on Style". The quote "Perhaps no other family of beers can frustrate the style police like farmhouse ales..." gives an idea of the attitude of this book. The point is made that "style" is sometimes over defined and stifles creativity. The point is to make good beer.

The book does not set out to prescribe what a farmhouse ale should be. Rather it describes the history of the farmhouse ales and their modern successors. The book does give some recipes and suggestions, but makes the point that these are starting points for experimentation.

As a brewer who views style very broadly and loves to learn new techniques and experiment, I greatly enjoyed this book. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys beer and brewing.

This beautiful, soft-covered book is fit for the great-room coffee table, but lives with even greater panache in the kitchen. Saunders traces the specialties of craft beer and food within each section of American continent: from the chocolate beer dinners of Chef Bruce Paton at the Cathedral Hill Hotel in San Francisco, California, to "A Day at the Beach" menus with Alaskan Amber-glazed grilled salmon in the Alaskan Northwest or the Belgian Beer Dinners at Monk's Café in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

She seems to single out every great name associated with craft beer and food: Tom Peters and Chef Adam Glickman, Curt Decker, Garrett Oliver, Carol Stoudt, American Bounty Chef Anita Olivarez Eisenhauer, Dave Alexander, Pastry Chef Crystal Duck, Pam and Bob Cooper, Cheesemaker Willi Lehner, Chuck Skypeck, Brewchef Tim Schafer, Larry Bell, Rob Tod, Natalie and Vinnie Cirluzo, Gina and Vince Marsaglia, Shaun O' Sullivan, Dan Gordon and Dean Biersch, Chef Jody Denton, Lisa Morrison, Charles and Rose Ann Finkel, Greg Higgins, Jim Koch, Tomme Arthur, Ben Johnson - and scores of others. Beer for dummies is an excellent starting point fo people who want to learn more about beer. it is well organised with good information and a little humor. It's one flaw is that a few chapters of the book are little more than tables that don't really help the novice user and can be overwelming. It is overall one of the better books about beer.
