Not a Lager Book 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Although this book has a lot of useful information in it, I was disappointed to find it was not about lager at all. It is simply a general purpose brewing book with a lot of emphasis on all grain brewing. This makes it hard to rate because as a lager book it gets zero stars, which is why it was on my Christmas wish list.

Must be for REALLY advanced brewers 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I hesitate giving this book a bad review because it's clear that anyone who does so must not be "advanced" enough in homebrewing to appreciate it. (We might not be altogether different from those who couldn't see the emperor's new clothes.)
The book certainly isn't about brewing lagers (as opposed to other styles.) The author says as much in his introduction. That was a disappointment. More disappointing was the tone. It read more like a textbook than what I've come to enjoy in "homebrewing books." (Books like Papazian's and Palmer's among others.) It screams with the message that brewing is just too serious of a matter to have fun with. I disagree. I guess that means I'm just a beginner.

Editorial Review:

This book offers a thorough yet practical education on the theory and techniques required to produce high-quality beers using all-grain methods either at home or in a small commercial brewery.

Non-biased review 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Please, take this book for what it is worth. It's written by a brewer, so obviously it is going to be skewed to brewing. The author never denies this. Look at the first paragraph. This books is great at showing why wine has gained the social status that it has and why beer has not, but should have. Wine has always been considered a rich mans drink, and beer is considered to be a poor mans drink. This book goes to show why this is not true. Beer is just as social and respectable as wine and should be considered so.

Editorial Review:

Why is wine considered more sophisticated even though the production of beer is much more technologically complex? Why is wine touted for its health benefits when beer has more nutritive value? Why does wine conjure up images of staid dinner parties while beer denotes screaming young partiers? Charles Bamforth explores several paradoxes involving these beverages, paying special attention to the culture surrounding each. He argues that beer can be just as grown-up and worldly as wine and be part of a healthy, mature lifestyle. Both beer and wine have histories spanning thousands of years. This is the first book to compare them from the perspectives of history, technology, nature of the market for each, quality attributes, types and styles, and the effect that they have on human health and nutrition.

Unbeatable Dictionary of Beer 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

In case you haven't heard, beer's the new wine, and RateBeer's been guiding drinkers of Milwaukee's finest through the microbrew revolution for seven blurry years. "The Beer Guide" basically puts the best of the website in your pocket, with reviews of nearly 3,000 brews that range from Bud Ice to Zywiec Porter. Everything's ranked alphabetically, with an easy (if brutally honest) five-star rating system, listing of alcohol content, and short descriptions that are as funny as they are informative.

I especially liked the section in front with brief, helpful definitions of the different styles of beer (a crash course on learning your lagers from your lambics) and a Food-to-Beer pairing guide in the back that suggests, wine-style, what brews go best with which meals. There's also a Judging Sheet in the back to help get your own tasting chops up--you too could be a RateBeer star. Sized to fit in the palm of one hand (presumably with a pint in the other), it's the ideal guide for sudsers of any level looking to elevate their game.

Editorial Review:

Recently updated, this is most comprehensive guide to ales and lagers sold in the United States: More than 2,700 beers are described and rated, based on tens of thousands of reviews on RateBeer.com, the country's foremost beer judging website. 'We found RateBeer to be the most reliable,' says Men's Journal. Includes bonus food-pairing guide by award-winning beer writer Stan Hieronymus, as well as descriptions of major beer styles. Makes a perfect -- and highly affordable -- gift for the beer geeks on your list. Updated June 2008. Celebrator Beer News magazine calls it ''a handy reference guide to beers from around the world. Its 2,700 reviews are by Rate.Beer.com's top evaluators. Each entry includes the beer style, brewery information and a description of the beer.''

A Brewing Chem Book for Non-Brewers? 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I am an analytical chemist and homebrewer. I thought this book would be targeted towards an audience that was interested in both. Seriously, who else is going to buy it? In its attempt to be "non-technical," it simply doesn't cover the subject matter.

The worst thing is its complete failure to discuss water chemistry and pH control in the mash. There is a table of ions, but nothing more. Despite being a "chemistry book," it never even defines pH. Look up "pH" in the index and you get "pH, measuring." That's it.

The "best" chapter -- on off-flavors -- offers trite answers; lots of info on what to do, no guidance whatsoever on HOW TO DO IT.

The last chapter is on how to be a homebrew judge. Sorry Dr Janson, but that topic is UTTERLY IRRELEVANT to the subject of your book!!

I have been more disappointed in a book purchase, but not often. I anticipate having a difficult time even giving it away. Do not buy this book.

Editorial Review:

These simple explanations serve as a guide to the brewing process and demystify the biochemistry of beer, yeast and fermentation, mashing and sparging, and more.

I'm giving this book one star only because I can't give it 0 1 out of 5 stars.
9 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Don't waist your money. The first chapter on the history was great. He tells how Guinness got started and things about other breweries. But after that it's all down hill. This is the worst in the series. I thought it would be geared for the home brewer like the others in the series. Boy was I wrong. This is the worst beer book I have ever read. The author goes on and on and on with formulas and equations. I guess he has to show off his knowledge. He is a doctor. He does not have to impress me with all this stuff I just want to know how to make Stout in simple terms. He brings up a lot of stuff that in my opinion is not related. You would have to be a biochemist and a doctor to understand 99% of this book. A commercial brewer with some education may understand some. And there are no recipes for Stout. How is a person supposed to know what it tastes like if you don't know what's in it? How are you supposed to make it if you don't know what's in it. In my opinion the other books in the series pull this one threw. People think the others were good so this one must be to. NOT!! In my opinion the author is a quake who just so happens to know some history about Stout(That was ot very much get got most of the info from some were else and he even says so) and he filled the rest in with garbage that the average guy has no clue about what he is talking about. This book is not about brewing Stout and how to like the rest. It's the biochemistry of Stout.

Editorial Review:

Michael Lewis, Ph.D., traces the changing view of this popular beer style from a medicinal tonic to its glorified position in today's beer world. Illustrations and photos throughout.

Very well done 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Any homebrewer that enjoys making and drinking pale ales needs this book. As an avid reader of the Classic Beer Styles Series, I feel that the author has taken some of the best aspects of the previous 15 books and combined it all into one, making this one of the most useful in the series. The second edition of the book is a tremendous improvement over the first.

The book is longer than most of the others in the series, but only because the author broke the pale ale category into many subcategories. He does not discriminate - he explains all pretty much equally. The recipes are different and thoroughly presented; the method of dispensing each is even specified. All in all, a very useful reference for the homebrewer.

good for history, short on brewing information 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I liked the historical information, the main reason for my rating, but was disappointed in the lack of brewing information. Maybe it will tell you enoough to get an idea of whether or not you actually want to brew Pale Ale but you won't learn the how part.

Editorial Review:

Never before has the evolution of pale ale been so thoroughly explored. Terry Foster pays proper homage to this distinctive ale, and the substyles it has spawned.

Very Helpful but needs Update 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great introduction to advanced brewing topics. Chapter one discusses the US Beer Market, from a craft brewing perspective, the arrangements between brewer-distributor-retailer-consumer; various state laws; taxes; production. A very interesting read. Further chapters discuss characteristics of malt, hops, adjuncts, and yeast, going over composition, how they affect brewing, compromises that can be made.

This is a fantastic book for understanding why beer works, and how to make it work better and more consistently. The only problem is that the book has no data more recent than about 1997, making some of it (particularly the US Beer Market chapter) obsolete, as it is now a decade old. Still a great and easy read, particularly for the introduction to advanced brewing techniques.

Editorial Review:

Whether you're a professional brewer, a homebrewer, or a beer buff who wants to know more about beer, The Brewers' Handbook is a comprehensive introduction on the art and science of brewing beer. This easy-to-read book is a practical, step-by-step guide that covers it all.

This book is not for the serious beer cook. A typical ingredient is "1 can beer". Real beer has styles and rarely comes in a can. Need I say more?

Walk, no run, away from this one.

Nice addition to a beer-themed gift basket. 4 out of 5 stars.

Book was a fun addition to a beer-themed gift! Although the recipes were not complicated, it was great for someone just learning to cook. Note: I did not pay attention to the dimensions and did not realize it was only a couple of inches tall.

READ THE DIMENSIONS!!...but cute little book 3 out of 5 stars.

Great book for the price! 5 out of 5 stars.
