Editorial Review:

THE WINNER OF THE GOURMAND WORLD COOKBOOK AWARDS in the category of the Best Book in Cooking with Wine, Beer or Spirits for Books
New Tastes in Green Tea is an original cookbook that ushers an underappreciated flavor into the kitchen as a beverage and a cooking ingredient. The range of recipes is startling. Green Tea Latte, Matcha Smoothie, or Iced Matcha au Lait take "the greens" in new directions. Mouthwatering recipes for gratin, quiche, pastas, and desserts will enliven the adventurous cook's culinary repertoire.
While breaking fresh ground, New Tastes in Green Tea also covers the basics. Author Mutsuko Tokunaga, vice president of the World Green Tea Association, introduces the reader to the most popular types of traditional tea, the fine art of brewing a perfect cup, and the ins and outs of tea lore. Lavish images by two top food photographers provide the perfect visual accompaniment for making green tea a part of everyday life.
This book arrives at the perfect time. With the growing awareness of the health benefits of this popular beverage, and the emergence of such innovative teas as vanilla hojicha and mango sencha, green tea is finding a place in more and more households. On the health front, the beneficial properties are almost too numerous to count. It is said to restrict the increase of blood cholesterol, control high blood pressure, lower blood sugar, refresh the body, deter food poisoning, help prevent cavities, fight viruses, and freshen skin.
Whether you are looking for a bevy of palate-pleasing drinks or savory new food recipes, New Tastes in Green Tea is a must-have for anyone seeking to appreciate the versatility and elegant flavorings of one of the world's most healthful beverages.

Colorfully illustrated compendium of tea facts & recipes 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 37 people found this review helpful.

In Mary's exuberant artistic style, the theme of serving tea and collecting "tea stuff" is treated with joy. A lifetime collector who enjoys the acoutrements of tea as much as the tea party itself, the author/illustrator includes photos from her own collection and favorite recipes. I've recently added this volume to my tea book collection and enjoyed reading it.

Tea Lovers Delight 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of those special books you come across once in a long while. Mary Englebreit is well loved the world over and this book contains many of her wonderful drawings plus photos of some of her own tea collectibles. This is a delightful little book - one to treasure. If you love tea I think you'll love this book. If you love ME I guarantee you love it! And if you haven't met Mary and her works yet, you are in for a real treat!

Tea-lightful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Mary Engelbreit infuses her whimsical style into everything she creates, and this book is a prime example. It is beautifully illustrated and photographed. There's a little bit of everything on the subject of tea here, like tea history, tea decor, and tea party ideas. It's bound to put a smile on your face.

"One Is Like The Other" 3 out of 5 stars.
41 of 45 people found this review helpful.

If you own or have read Emilie Barnes' lovely book, If Teacup's Could Talk, you will find it very similar to this book. It contains the same basic recipes and tea information. This book does give a little more detailed information, however if you want nicer pictures and easier reading, the other book would be my choice. Emilie Barnes is a great author with a delightful way of inspiring people, so it is no sin to own both books, however if you are on a budget, you may want to just buy one of the books, you would not be missing anything that way.

Not Worth Nine Bucks 3 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Yes, a sweet book, as others have described it. But, I was a tad disappointed that it was so thin when I received it. I would not have paid nine bucks for this book if I had seen it first. This is the type of book I would pick up at a gift shop for three or four dollars, max. Still contemplating returning this one; I wouldn't even have to box it up - just stick it in an envelope and mail it back.

Encourages creativity 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is a really neat book - it starts out with the history of tea and definitions of different "tea speak" like infusion versus decoction etc. Then it talks to growing/finding and harvesting your own herbs. Then it talks to how to prepare tea and then there are a few recipes. I was expecting more recipes but there are some nice lists that you can just figure out the ratios yourself. For example there's a list of two-herb blends (e.g. bergamot and sweet cecely, chamomile and apple mint etc) - the point of these lists is to give you the basics you need to get more adventurous and create more of your own blends. There are lists for three-herb blends too. The recipes are for more complicated things like making a chai, or making specific teas (there are about 6 recipes like that which are good). Then there are recipes for syrups etc too. The last 50 pages or so are all about the herbs themselves, telling you which parts to use and text on taste, special propoerties, how to grow & harvest that specific herb, and more. Its really a great book. As I mentioned I had expected a book of just recipes but this book is different (and ultimately better I think) in that it gives you the information and some of the baby steps to actually create your own tea blends. Its a lot of fun. Definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys playing around with herbs, ghrows and herb garden or just loves teas.

Very Informative Tea Book 5 out of 5 stars.
35 of 35 people found this review helpful.

I read this book cover to cover and found it to be a GREAT tea book! Although it covers a broad range of tea topics, it covers each of them very well. I usually don't like history but found the author's descriptions and stories of what happened long ago fascinating. I have re-read them many times, each time learning somethings new. Mr. Pratt provides a Chronology of Tea Fortunes in the back of the book which is an extremely valuable reference, helping me keep track of what happened when. The author covers many other tea subjects, too, including types of tea, tea trade, tea things, etc. but doesn't use recipes to fill up the pages. It is all very informative. The only thing that could have made the book better is a more up-to-date reference list in the back. Most of the books listed here are out of print.

I have also read the New Tea Lover's Treasury by the same author but found the "old" one to be a better value. There isn't much additional information in the new book and a lot of good stuff in the old version was omitted. For example, the chronology (historic time line) is completely omitted as is the coverage of the tea trade. The Bibliography of Tea Books in the new edition is more extensive, but here again most of the books listed are out of print.

Editorial Review:

In the U.S., tea sales now top $250 million annually. Now, the author of the classic The Wine Bibber's Bible presents a delightful compendium of history, anecdotes, and information certain to enchant every tea lover. James Norwood Pratt discusses the wide variety of teas available, shows what makes a quality cup of tea, and much more.

Great Information 4 out of 5 stars.

After looking through this book for only a few minutes, I'd located several recipes I wanted to try. I will be preparing the lemon balm punch for an Herb Society event next weekend and look forward to serving many more of the recipes this summer and winter. The size and format of this book (small) make it easy to keep handy in the kitchen.

Excellent Book to Learn and Enjoy the Art of Afternoon Tea! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I recently purchased this great idea! It's a cookbook, along with a CD! It's called "Afternoon Tea Serenade" by Sharon O'Connor. The author is a musician, and author, as well as a cook. Afternoon Tea Serenade is her 12th release!

The book contained within this set is great! I enjoy books that not only offer you the recipes, but also offer you history and techniques. This book tells you not only the origination of tea (the drink, that is), but also the custom of "afternoon tea". There are tips on how to choose tea, how to brew the perfect cup of tea, how to make iced tea, as well as how to make some herbal teas! She suggests how to pick suitable tea cups, and offers some suggestions as to how to throw a themed tea party, such as a Bridal Shower Tea.

The book is filled with recipes from famous tea houses in the United States, England and Ireland. Such recipes include Welsh Rarebit, Cucumber and Mint Sandwiches, as well as Barmbrack. I have tried quite a few of the recipes and they each have turned out wonderfully.

Included within this set is a CD, which contains classical music to set the atmosphere. When I listened to this CD, I felt like I was back in the late 1800s during Victorian times! Artists on this CD include Bach and Mozart. Each piece is wonderful, and I am sure you will recognizea few, if not all of the pieces!

Treat yourself, or a friend, to something special this Spring, and buy this set! Then, call over your family and friends and have yourself a tea party!
