A Special Gift for Tea Lovers 5 out of 5 stars.
39 of 39 people found this review helpful.

For many people the drinking of tea has become both a tradition and a ceremony. This book is written for these "tea people," whether they are just beginning a tradition of tea drinking or whether they've enjoyed tea for years. The author shares many thoughts and ideas for setting aside a special time each day for enjoying tea. She offers suggestions for special tea celebrations throughout the year and includes meditations for each celebration. She also covers basic information on the history of tea and gives a number of simple recipes for dishes to serve at tea time. However, this is not a recipe book. Its writing primarily feeds the minds, souls, and hearts of tea lovers. Finally, the photo montages in the book are beautiful.

Editorial Review:

Menus, recipes, and inspired suggestions for relaxing and celebrating common life experiences over a cup of tea specially selected to fit the occasion. Celebrations include a private moment of early morning tea, a large group gathering to celebrate a graduation, and an airport tea send-off for family members.

Editorial Review:

Coffee, one of the most commercially important crops grown, is distributed and traded globally in a multi-million dollar world industry. This exciting new book brings together in one volume the most important recent developments affecting the crop. Contributions from around 20 internationally-respected coffee scientists and technologists from around the world provide a vast wealth of new information in the subject areas in which they are expert.

The book commences with three cutting-edge chapters covering non-volatile and volatile compounds that determine the flavour of coffee. Chapters covering technology follow, including comprehensive information on developments in roasting techniques, decaffeination, the science and technology of instant coffee and home / catering beverage preparation. The physiological effects of coffee drinking are considered in a fascinating chapter on coffee and health. Agronomic aspects of coffee breeding and growing are covered specifically in chapters concentrating on these aspects, particularly focussing on newly-emerging molecular and cellular techniques. Finally, recent activities of some international organisations are reviewed in a lengthy appendix.

The editors of Coffee: Recent Developments have drawn together a comprehensive and extremely important book that should be on the shelves of all those involved in coffee. The book is a vital tool for food scientists, food technologists and agricultural scientists and the commercially important information included in the book makes it a 'must have reference' to all food companies involved with coffee. All libraries in universities, and research stations where any aspect of the coffee crop is studied or taught should have copies of the book available.

R. J. Clarke, also co-editor of the widely-acclaimed six-volume work Coffee published between 1985 and 1988, is a consultant based in Chichester U. K.

O. G. Vitzthum, formerly Director of Coffee Chemistry Research worldwide at Kraft, Jacobs, Suchard in Bremen, Germany is Honorary Professor at the Technical University of Braunsweig, Germany and Scientific Secretary of the Association Scientifique Internationale du Cafe (ASIC), in Paris France.

Excellent book! 5 out of 5 stars.
59 of 63 people found this review helpful.

This book can be finished in a day! I simply couldn't put it down. It's written as a story so you get quickly pulled into the storyline to find out the end. Although, you already know the ending...Starbucks is one of the most admired brands and successful companies ever known.

So how did they do it? This book answers this question and more. What I enjoyed about the book is that it opened the door to the heart and soul of Starbucks to reveal their evolution and foundation. As I prepare my business plan, this book has been more helpful to me than typical business plan books. A lot of times those books provide heartless examples of companies. Sure you've got a great idea for a product or service, but how do you translate that into a brand? What is in the best interest for your customer? After all, Starbucks just sells coffee and coffee related products - nothing extravagant alone, but the mystical & romantic experience surrounding their coffee is a distinctive brand that is difficult to match.

This book answers the Who? Where? When? Why? How? of the Starbucks development - their trials, errors and commitment to their beliefs. The concepts discussed in the book are things that I feel touch every business, yet this book provides consistent examples of how to address them.

Concepts such as:-
-Growth & development
-Branding
-Why you don't have to franchise to be successful brand
-Rewarding customers by first rewarding employees ("partners") and suppliers
-Turning down profitable alternatives if it sacrifices the customer's overall experience or a partner's view of the company

I must admit I have not read "Pour your heart into it" so I can't comment on any similarities/differences between the two books. What I can say is that if you are interested in creating a world-class company and want to learn how to infuse your company with a soul (rather than focusing on your product development) to ensure success, then this is your book!

Editorial Review:

Insight into Starbucks's rise to worldwide recognition is given in this tale of marketing success. From three college friends' dreams of coffee beans to the cafés that are open on nearly every street corner, Starbucks has grown immensely with three new shops opening every day across the world. Full of interesting facts about the coffee giant, the book includes a rare interview with CEO Howard Schultz.

Each title in this series features an in-depth, biographical look at one of today's top brands, such as Guinness, Adidas, and Starbucks. The brands included have all established themselves not only as financial successes but also as cultural icons. The storytelling style and eye-catching design of the books make learning about these innovative brands stimulating and enjoyable.

Mostly good 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book is a great beginner's introduction to the world of tea, with the exception of the chapter on the history of tea, which I found to be incomplete, if not historically inaccurate. The insinuation was that the tea-opium trade problem was all due to the British, when the reality was that the Chinese were not easy to deal with. I think perhaps the best feature of this book is the discussion of the different types of teas, how they are processed, and especially the many excellent pictures which show the differences in how various teas look, as well as suggestions for proper serving and brewing.

For a much more detailed and interesting discussion of tea history, read James Norwood Platt's New Tea Lover's Treasury. His discussions of the differences in taste among the various types and blends of tea were also more interesting to me than in The New Tea Companion (although more opinionated as well, but I have found Mr. Pratt's tasting comments to be generally "spot on").

Editorial Review:

London's Jane Pettigrew has joined American tea writer Bruce Richardson in creating the latest definitive guide to teas throughout the world. Beautifully illustrated, this classic book gives detailed information and brewing instructions for over 80 teas. Chapters on the newest information about tea and health, tea production, tea blending and tea hospitality are included. This book is a valuable up-to-date addition to libraries of both tea novices and professionals. If you have ever wondered about the time and temperature to brew your teas - white, green, black, or oolong - this is the book for you.

Nice "fluff" book about creating comfort and coziness with tea 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Drinking tea is an age-old way to pamper yourself. Simple Pleasures of Tea is a delightful book about one of life's most cozy and comforting activities. The book's introduction sets up the lovely premise of using teas to enjoy a simpler lifestyle.

Many wonderful ideas for infusions, types of honey and recipes for cooking wonderful baked goods that go well with tea follow. I love the quietly festive recipes, like Red Velvet Cake, Mexican Wedding Cookies, Lemon Tea Bread, Buttermilk Biscuits, Rhubard-Strawberry Crisp, Pumpkin Bread and Raisin Scones. Yum - comfort foods for chilly afternoons with tea. There also are recipes for homemade teas, sun teas and steaming tea facials.

The Simple Pleasures of Tea book also FEELS good. The pages have a nice clay coating and really gorgeous pictures. Great quotes from Emily Post, the Wind in the Willows and Thoreau spice up the content. It's a pretty lovely little kitchen, breakfast nook, or tea shelf book.

Editorial Review:

Feast on the simple pleasures of life! Enjoy the presence of flowers, sipping a delicate cup of tea, and lounging in a warm bath on a cool day. Make the most of these stories, recipes, crafts, quotations, and suggestions that create comfort in and around us. Any one of these ideas is perfect after a long, trying day.

Idiot Discovers Tea 2 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Great idea, dismal execution. Apparently, the author has just found out about tea. Then he probably checked a few websites, looked tea up at Wikipedia, and wrote a book. The book is mainly recipes, foods to enjoy with tea. I cannot comment on them as I did not buy this book for recipes, I was looking for new information on tea. While this book does contain a few accurate facts about tea, it also contains egregious errors. One of the biggest being that Puer tea is a type of oolong! This mistake alone is so boneheaded it invalidates the entire book.
I love the Little Black Book series, but this title is more like the little black mark.

... Very well done 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

It was the cover that caught my attention initially, as it suggests quality. And this is one case where you CAN judge a book by its cover!

The author has done an impressive job presenting coffee-related beverages, but this book is much more than that. I can't imagine a more definitive and entertaining read on the subject of the humble coffee bean. Folklore, photography, humour, great recipes... simply an excellent read. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
