BAD ! 1 out of 5 stars.
35 of 47 people found this review helpful.

600 recipies ... WHO NEEDS IT ? There is nothing said about the art of making a great espresso, a few useless pages in the begining and that's it. What about all the different types of coffee machines ( piston or pump ? ), the water, the milk ? In the little paragraph about milk, UHT milk used throughout Europe, the land of Espresso, is not even mentioned ... and yes you can make your own UHT milk. There are so many recipes that would make anyone SICK, the awful variations suggested were invented to fill in pages. A barista needs to know how to make good espresso and a few basic coffee drinks, no one needs a book suggesting Marshmellow in a rasberry flavored ... thing, topped with whip cream. Awful. Coffee lovers : avoid it.

Good recipes, incredibly crappy book 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is a prime example of why self-publishing is an iffy proposition. The recipes in it are excellent; that's not the problem. The writing is wretched, the editing is nonexistent; while I'm sure the author is an excellent tutor one on one (whatever criticisms I have of the book as written, she knows what she's talking about), but she cannot write to save her life. I found reading this book as an adjunct to my training (I was a Starbucks barista at the time) to be terribly useful, but I haven't seen my copy since 1999 and I haven't really missed it.

The only really invaluable recipe here is the Snickerdoodle latte, which is a vanilla latte with whipped cream and cinnamon on it. Apart from that there are far better sources for information. For the record, the three stars I gave this book are almost solely because of the recipes (it gets some props for at least attempting an organization that fits a barista better than a bartender, though); if it wasn't for that it would barely be deserving of one star.

Mennonite cooking that really schmecks! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm not a big cook, but this is one cookbook that I have added to my library. Edna Staebler, now 97 years of age, was a native of the Waterloo region of Ontario, which is really the heart of Canada's German community, and is where many Mennonites and Amish settled. Although she worked as a journalist for some time, she eventually put together this cookbook based on recipies that she had gathered primarily from fiends and family. Many of the recipies are Mennonite or influenced by Mennonite and German cooking. This book also consists of a number of anecdotes, so not only is it a great cookbook, but an entertaining read as well.

Editorial Review:

In the 1960s, Edna Staebler moved in with an Old Order Mennonite family to absorb their oral history and learn about Mennonite culture and cooking. From this fieldwork came the cookbook Food That Really Schmecks. Originally published in 1968, Schmecks instantly became a classic, selling tens of thousands of copies. Interspersed with practical and memorable recipes are Staebler’s stories and anecdotes about cooking, Mennonites, her family, and Waterloo Region. Described by Edith Fowke as folklore literature, Staebler’s cookbooks have earned her national acclaim.

Including this long-anticipated reprint of Food That Really Schmecks in our Life Writing series recognizes the cultural value of its narratives, positing it as a groundbreaking book in the food writing genre. This edition includes a foreword by award-winning author Wayson Choy and a new introduction by the well-known food writer Rose Murray.

Take Your Tea with This Entertaining Guide 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book is pure pleasure from beginning to end. Like a good novel you just don't want to put it down. Starting with the history of tea we embark on a soothing international journey of tea traditions. The authors have filled this book with descriptive commentaries and color photographs depicting the countries, the people and appropriate table settings. Recipes reflect the characteristics of each region. I have especially enjoyed using the "Guide to Buying Tea" with its serving suggestions. This book is a lovely and must have addition to any tea library!

Editorial Review:

For the entertainer, the cookbook lover and the international armchair traveler. Reveals the culinary rapture and conviviality that make the teatime ceremony a world-wide, time-honored tradition.

Good introduction to the art of Victorian tea. 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 21 people found this review helpful.

A good, practical introduction to the arts of having a Victorian tea. I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Pinchney at a tea conference a couple years ago and she is as gracious as her book would imply! Recommended.

Nice, but a little overboard... 1 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

First, let me say that it's a nice book. But the level of preciousness of this tome is enough to make anyone's stomach turn. Save your money, and buy a book that does a little more research, and leaves out the cute touches. But if you want to find out how to brew a cup of tea, this one will get you in the right direction. A little more editing would have helped.

Well-organized 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I felt that this wasn't the most captivating book I've read on Tea, but it was interesting, easy to read, well-organized and it did touch on somethings I didn't know. I liked the fact that she mentioned French Tea. I wish that she had given more detail about the ways that she makes tea so exciting. She mentioned that people always have such a phenomenal time at her Victorian Teas, but I wanted specifics!

Disapointied by Reality 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The author tried to enlighten people about serving Victorian Tea, and I believe she did her best. But, I was only dissapointed by the sad reality, if this book reflects general cognition about teas and antiques among general public in USA. Isn't it out of question to serve tea in styloform cups? I feel sorry that she had to advise not to!
