A very good book, with a minor exception 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've been a tea drinker for almnost all of my life. As a child in the early sixties I can recall that there was always tea in the kitchen. And now, at almost 50, tea is my favorite drink. I don't care too much for coffee. A cup of hot tea is what I prefer.
I've read a few books on tea over the years, and I've drank many, many different types of tea. These days I know what I like and that's pretty much what is in the cupboard.
This book presented a good deal of worthwhile information in it's few pages. The history, geography, and types of tea are spelled out clearly and simply.
All in all, it was a good book. But as I said, there is a minor exception. While this is the first time I'd seen this topic in an actually printed book, it is one that gets it's share of abuse on the tea drinkers forum; and that would be the suject of cream, sugar, and or lemon in your tea. In The Little Book of Tea, the author basically declares those who enjoy a little sugar in their tea, or a little lemon, to be acceptable, but looked down the nose at. I've heard it all before. It's amusing nonsense at best. Drink your tea how you enjoy drinking it. That's what it's all about: enjoyment.

Editorial Review:

With their innate sense of style and sophistication, the French elevate even the simple act of taking tea to an art form. From the delightful tea salons dotting every Parisian arrondissement to tea served at outdoor cafés nestled in the, hills of Provence, Carole Manchester shares the elegant art and essence of French tea.

French Tea features the teas served in centuries-old salons, out-of-the-way cafés, and in charming restaurants and smart homes throughout France. Whether it's tea taken poolside at the Hôtel Ritz or a Sunday afternoon tea served fireside in a cozy apartment in the 6th arrondissement, what distinguishes each one is the individual, stylish touches that make no two teas alike. Mint tea and Moroccan pastries served in a former mosque, elaborate teas taken in a grand hotel, tea enjoyed en famille in a simple loft kitchen, breakfast tea served at the historic Café des Deux Magots -- all of these and more are captured by Carole Manchester's text and Juliette d'Assay's glorious photography.

Of course, no volume on French tea would be complete without a selection of pâtisserie -- the unique pastries of France. Recipes for the most popular French tea pastries and savories include Tarte Tatin, the famous upsidedown apple tart; Financiers, miniature almond cakes; Honey Madeleines; Fougasse, a flatbread with olives; and Zucchini Quiche.

French Tea includes glossaries of tea and pastries, how to choose and serve the finest tea, a list of the best salons de thé in France, and, of course, how to brew a perfect pot of tea.

I wish I knew Helen 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

My daughter gave me this book for Christmas two years ago. It was my favorite gift. I would read it every night and jokingly refer to Helen as "my friend." When the night arrived that I read the final page, I truly felt that Helen was my friend. It made me sad that the stories ended and left me wanting to hear more of her wonderful tales of tea. Tea is an important part of my life and I was grateful to find another human being who shares that love and enthusiasm. I would recommend this book to all lovers of tea.

A sweet book for friends 5 out of 5 stars.

I was afraid this was going to be another restaurant-puffery book, but I was so pleasantly surprised! The engaging stories and accompanying recipes were charming. In fact, I borrowed this book from the library and then ran out and bought three copies to give away as gifts and one copy for myself!

Editorial Review:

Widely famed as the tea guru of Berkeley's Chez Panisse, Helen Gustafson is perhaps the world's foremost tea lecturer, tea writer, and irrepressible tea personality. Gustafson's approach to the minutiae of the tea experience is a magically macroscopic one--she makes the subject of tea come alive as a nexus of biographical detail, stories, recipes and reminiscences. Full-color illustrations.

A Great Book on a Major Part of Native American Culture 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is a series of essays on "the black drink" - a form of tea made from the yaupon holly by the Native American cultures of many parts of the Southeastern United States. The customs and ceremonies surrounding the black drink - called "casina" by the Timucuan Indians, "asi" by the Creeks, and known in various forms throughout the Southeast - were a major part of Native American cultures in this region. Since the yaupon holly is the only plant in North America which contains caffeine, it was used for different purposes by different cultures - some ceremonial, some purely social.

While the book was written some years ago, it's a great, fascinating synopsis of what we know about the drink and its place in Native American cultures. Jerry Milanich's chapter covers what we know of the archaeological evidence for the use of the drink, chapters by Fairbanks, Hudson and Sturtevant cover the ethnography and history among colonial-era and American-era cultures, and other chapters explain in detail about the yaupon holly and its range and natural features. For either the specialist in archaeology or history, or the general reader interested in Native American culture, this book is a neat, concise synthesis of what we know about the black drink and its place in our past.

A fun read, and highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

Until its use declined in the nineteenth century, Indians of the southeastern United States were devoted to a caffeinated beverage commonly known as black drink. Brewed from the parched leaves of the yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria), black drink was used socially and ceremonially. In certain ritual purification rites, Indians would regurgitate after drinking the tea. This study details botanical, clinical, spiritual, historical, and material aspects of black drink, including its importance not only to Native Americans, but also to many of their European-American contemporaries.
