Editorial Review:

Linking alchemy, anthropology, politics, and science, Antony Wild uncovers the intrigue that coffee has woven into its 500-year history.

Coffee trader and historian Antony Wild delivers a rollicking history of the most valuable legally traded commodity in the world after oil—and an industry that employs one hundred million people throughout the world.

From obscure beginnings in East Africa in the fifteenth century as a stimulant in religious devotion, coffee became an imperial commodity, produced by poor tropical countries and consumed by rich temperate ones. Through the centuries, the influence of coffee on the rise of capitalism and its institutions has been enormous. Revolutions were once hatched in coffeehouses, commercial alliances forged, secret societies formed, and politics and art endlessly debated.

Today, while coffee chains spread like wildfire, coffee-producing countries are in crisis: with prices at a historic low, they are plagued by unprecedented unemployment, abandoned farms, enforced migration, and massive social disruption.

Bridging the gap between coffee's dismal colonial past and its perilous corporate present, Coffee reveals the shocking exploitation that has always lurked at the heart of the industry. 8 pages of color illustrations.

Great Information for the beginner 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

If you're new to the topic of tea than Tea: The Drink that Changed the World by Laura Martin is the book for you. Beyond the expected coverage of how tea is consumed around the world the book includes a terrific load of basic information on the plant itself, how it is cultivated, managed, and harvested.

I'm well aware of the role tea has had in western history, especially in England and the U.S. I found the author's treatment of the role tea plays in virtually every major culture around the world very interesting. While not a long book, the coverage appears to me to be complete.

I found the rather extensive appendices at the end of the book to be particularly helpful. Tea and Health, Tea with Food, and Choice Teas from Around the World were very informative.

This book is loaded with great information.

Editorial Review:

Camellia sinensis, commonly known as tea, is grown in tea gardens and estates around the world. A simple beverage, served either hot or iced, tea has fascinated and driven us, calmed and awoken us, for well over two thousand years.

Tea: The Drink that Changed the World tells of the rich legends and history surrounding the spread of tea throughout Asia and the West, as well as its rise to the status of necessity in kitchens around the world. From the tea houses of China's Tang Dynasty (618-907), to fourteenth century tea ceremonies in Korea's Buddhist temples' to the tea plantations in Sri Lanka today, this book explores and illuminates tea and its intricate, compelling history.

Editorial Review:

Revised and updated, a compact guide to the beverage that keeps us running.

A freshly updated edition of the best introduction to one of the world's most popular products, The Coffee Book is jammed full of facts, figures, cartoons, and commentary covering coffee from its first use in Ethiopia in the sixth century to the rise of Starbucks and the emergence of Fair Trade coffee in the twenty-first. The book explores the process of cultivation, harvesting, and roasting from bean to cup; surveys the social history of café society from the first coffeehouses in Constantinople to beatnik havens in Berkeley and Greenwich Village; and tells the dramatic tale of high-stakes international trade and speculation for a product that can make or break entire national economies. It also examines the industry's major players, revealing how they have systematically reduced the quality of the bean and turned a much-loved product into a commodity and lifestyle accoutrement, ruining the lives of millions of farmers around the world in the process.

Finally, The Coffee Book, hailed as a Best Business Book by Library Journal when it was first published, considers the exploitation of labor and damage to the environment that mass cultivation causes, and explores the growing "conscious coffee" market and Fair Trade movement.

Absolutely wonderful 5 out of 5 stars.

I have had the privilege of dining at the Elmwood Inn and meeting the authors of this book. I have personally made most of these recipes and they are absolutely wonderful. Will make your tea party forever memorable.

a charming surprise 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Too often tea books rely on beautiful pictures for content, without coming through on quality recipes.

The Tea Table was a charming surprise - while the photography is indeed lovely, it is only a small part of the book. The bulk of the book is made up of unique and interesting recipes. In particular, the savories/sandwiches section is excellent - a large variety made of easily found ingredients. I look forward to presenting these at my next tea party.

Editorial Review:

Kentucky's historic Elmwood Inn won international attention as one of America's best-loved tea rooms when it was recognized by the British Guild of Tea Shops in 2002. Shelley and Bruce Richardson, authors of "A Year of Teas at the Elmwood Inn" and "A Tea for All Seasons," have now created their third volume of beautiful tea recipes guaranteed to inspire readers longing to set their own fabulous tea tables.

This collection contains 70 new recipes and is illustrated with 85 color photographs.

A Wonderful Book 5 out of 5 stars.
33 of 33 people found this review helpful.

TEA WITH FRIENDS is a terrific resource for those who need specific ideas for year round tea parties. Each chapter suggests one theme party for each month of the year. Within each chapter is background information on the theme, a section entitled "Setting The Scene" in which the author gives suggestions on what service and accessories you could use, as well as ideas for centerpieces and music. She also includes a menu, a featured recipe and a craft project or activity relating to the theme, My favorite is November's Victorian Afternoon Tea. Knight gives insightful background information on how tea became a British obsession during the reign of Queen Alexandria Victoria and the causes behind rise in the popularity of black tea, (one of the menu offerings she suggests). In essence, she not only makes menu suggestions, but she provides the background you need to understand why she is making these suggestions. She also includes an example of what an invitation for your November tea might look like. In "Setting The Scene" she lists excellent suggestions for accenting the table with Victorian charm, as well as detailed instructions on how to make a Victorian centerpiece. There are also music suggestions that would be appropriate for this setting. Knight also includes a full menu with a featured recipe for Watercress and Stilton sandwiches. Finally she incorporates detailed instructions on how to make lavender sachets. Sidebars tell about various traditions of the Victorian royal family. In just a few short pages, you have the background, recipes, serving ideas and special touches for a monthly theme tea party anytime of year.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves tea and is looking for simple, creative ways to share the pleasures of tea time with friends.

a beautiful book on tea parties 4 out of 5 stars.
53 of 53 people found this review helpful.

This book starts with 4 pages of tea history and brewing instructions and then has 3 pages of "how to's" for tea parties. There is a theme tea for every month with menus and suggestions. There are approximately 4 recipes included with each month, so having another tea-time cookbook is advisable. Two of my favorites are "The Book of Afternoon Tea" by Lesley Mackley and "Totally Teatime Cookbook" by Helene Siegel.

As far as "how to's" for tea parties, "Tea with Friends" by Elizabeth Knight has more information, but fewer recipes. Even so, this makes a beautiful gift book.

Let's have a tea party! 5 out of 5 stars.

What Every American Tea Lover Has Been Waiting For! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Bruce Richardson has done it again! After much success with "The Great Tea Rooms of Britain," loyal readers asked for and encouraged Richardson to do an American version. Over a three year span, logging alot of air and road miles, he has produced what so many have been longing for. He has given us the first-ever look into some of "The Great Tea Rooms of America."

While not feasibly being able to include ALL tea rooms in America, Richardson, based on his many years of experience in the tea trade, picked those that he thought best represented the fine art of tea. His knowledge is incredibly valuable. He begins the book with an introduction of tea itself and the history of the introduction of tea into America. Then begins the journey. With a wonderful representation of many different styles, twenty-one tea rooms are spotlighted, including: Brown Palace Hotel of Denver, Butchart Gardens of Victoria, British Columbia, Cliffside Inn of Newport, Rhode Island, Drake Hotel of Chicago, Dunbar Tea Room of Sandwich, Massachusetts, Dunshanbe Teahouse of Boulder, Colorado, Fairmont Empress Hotel of Victoria, British Columbia, Farmhouse Tea Shoppe of Dunwoody, Georgia, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort of Lake Buena Vista, Florida, Hydrangea of Wilmette, Illinois, Landy Mendl's of New York City, Lady Primrose's Thatched Cottage of Dallas, McCharles House of Tustin, California, Rose Tree Cottage of Pasadena, California, St. Regis Hotel of New York City, Sentimental Rose Tea Garden of Frazeysburg, Ohio, Swan House of Findlay, Ohio, The T Salon of New York City, The Tea Room of Savannah, Georgia, Waldorf-Astoria of New York City....and of course Richardson's own Elmwood Inn of Perryville, Kentucky. Included in the description of each particular tea room is a bit of history, delicious recipes, great color photographs (Bruce is also a photographer), and a narrative overview of his tea experience there. Included is Jane Pettigrew's (of London) editorial on Elmwood Inn. Each tea room's mailing address, phone number and website are listed in the back. I found the book to be informing, interesting and quite simply...fun.

While I know there are many American tea lovers that are thrilled this book is finely completed, there must be as many international tea lovers that are just as thrilled, as this book makes for an excellent tea traveler's guide across the great United States of America. I assure you, you can find confidence in this wonderful book. With Perryville being home to me, I frequent Elmwood Inn and enjoy the pleasures of afternoon tea as prepared by my friends, Bruce and Shelley Richardson. (I feel so fortunate!) After all, this is the only American tea room to be recommended by the British Tea Council.

Editorial Review:

Bruce Richardson's updated fourth edition of The Great Tea Rooms of America takes you on an insider's tour of 20 outstanding tea rooms in the United States and Canada. This edition is filled with 150 color photographs and contains touring suggestions so you can see the country with tea on your mind. Also included is a listing of America's Great Tea Shops and 25 pages of recipes.
