Caffeine Clout 2 out of 5 stars.
27 of 89 people found this review helpful.

I liked this book because it makes a good showing on my shelf. People at my house say "Akmed, you are a coffee chemist?" I say, "yes, everything coffee does for me this book can undo. Ever drank too much coffee and can't sleep? This book solves that problem! Sleep for days after reading this book! I did. And you can too." One of my friends borrowed the book just before she quit coffee and died of severe depression. I'm not saying she read the book, but carrying it around seem to have the same effect. I hope everyone with too much time and energy will read this book, as they too will suffer a lingering malaise.

Everything you want to know about coffee 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

It is a very interesting book about the history of coffee, coffee around the world, the art of coffee drinking, and many recipes of cakes, pastries, in which coffee is one of the ingredients. There are many nice pictures in the book. The only thing I dislike is that there are some spelling mistakes.

FANTASTIC! 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is absolutely amazing. It's so thorough. It takes you from the history of coffee to the way it is used today.

The way the history is written will hold your interest as they highlight and write in an entertaining way.

The book describes the process of getting the coffee beans, roasting them, and the way they are ground up. It uses great description in how the flavors are different.

Also, throughout the back of the book, there are TONS of different recipes from coffee drinks (hot and cold) to cakes, crepes, ice cream, and pies, along with many other recipes.

There are resources at the end of the book.

This is perfect for the kitchen, the coffee table, and especially a gift for the die hard coffee lover in your life. You'll learn more than you ever thought you could.

Editorial Review:

Explore coffee's many different uses from aromatic beverage to indispensable cooking ingredient. Learn the history of coffee while enjoying a cup of the brew and maybe a biscotti.

Great and easy to find what you need... 5 out of 5 stars.

I am loving this book. Each time I find more information that is so helpful to me. I never thought creating my own tea blends to satisfy ME would be so easy and fun too. It is so easy to personalize my blends with this book.

Look No Further 5 out of 5 stars.

Lovely, informative book. I took it with me to the health food store so I could have a better idea what to look for. Bulk herbs can be a bit intimidating if you are new to using them. I think this book would be very useful to anyone new to making teas, as well as those who are more experienced.

I like that there are several recipes for teas that have the same effect, such as energizing blends, and that each of the energizing blends is different. For example, The "Good Morning Blend" consists of peppermint, rose hips, ginger, ginko, rosemary, orange peel and anise. "Stamina City" includes dandelion, sarsaparilla, siberian ginseng, rehmannia, cinnamon and licorice. "Damiana Daytime Delight" incorporates oatstraw, damiana, gotu kolo, lemon balm, and clover blossoms, and "Sassy Root Revival" is sarsaparilla root, Siberian ginseng, Korean or Chinese ginseng, yellow dock root, ginger, cinnamon, licorice and orange slices.

I like that rather than tell you how many cups or table spoons of each ingredient, they tell you how many parts (1 part peppermint leaves, 2 parts oat straw, etc), so you can make any quantity you like.

When I went to buy herbs, I looked at all four energy recipes and bought a few ingredients from each (couldn't afford all of them and some herbs are more expensive than others). Although I haven't actually tried a recipe, I can tell the authors know what they are talking about. The cool thing is, you can tweak things and create your own blends, and you don't have to follow the recipes to a "tea".

Also included is a section on brewing and blending, gathering and storing, and getting to know the herbs. The recipes are divided by category based on what you wish the tea to do for you. For example, there are detox teas, teas to combat acne, tummy aches, female issues, teas for sleeping, and stress, as well as many others.

The book is well laid out and easy to understand. In the back of the book, the herbs are alphabetized with a section about each herb. Each herb gets about half a page describing the history, taste, part of herb used, how to brew it, cautionary advice, vitamins, and there are nice, easy to reference side notes that give the health benefits. The pages have subtle green and blue hues that are pleasing to the eye., and the book is small enough to take with you to the store (about 8"x8" x 3/8".

Each tea recipe has a nice, modest monochromatic photo of the creator of that blend, and a page about her (or him). They don't go over board with the mini-biography. In fact, I would usually get annoyed, but it was not at all bothersome, and in fact, quite a nice, personal touch. You will also find some lovely photos and subtle artwork throughout the book. They in no way detract from the content and are pleasing to the eye.

There is also a nice table of taste characteristics. For example, under the category "sweet', there is a list including anise, licorice, stevia, vanilla, and rehmannia .Included are are 10 taste categories.

This is my first tea book and I doubt I will buy another. This one has everything I need. In fact, using the information presented, I look forward to creating my own special blends to give as gifts for my loved ones, and I am inspired to grow my own herbs to make it more affordable. There are 101 blends in this book, which is more than enough for anyone, but the added information enables one to create infinite personalized blends that work in harmony with your body and senses.

One of my favorites 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I collect cookbooks and I love to host afternoon tea parties, so this book was right up my alley. It has probably the most extensive collection of recipes of any tea book I own.

Every recipe I have tried in this has turned out great, scones, mock devonshire cream, whoopie pies (oh my! they are delicious!),mini eclairs, strawberry puffs, chicken salad, cheese spread. I could go on and on, Ive had this book for years and I use it all the time. I not only use it when I have tea but also for finger foods at dinner parties.

If you are looking for a book with many different recipes and menus than get this one. The recipes are easy to follow, great tasting and you'll never run out of ideas.

Editorial Review:

The book includes a description of a unique tea held at each inn, the innkeeper's favorite recipes for tea-time delicacies, and pictures of the inn and tea service, as well as mouth-watering photographs of the foods. Not much information on Chinese tea 1 out of 5 stars.
40 of 47 people found this review helpful.

This book might be useful to someone looking for a book with general information about tea, but for someone who wants to learn about the real art of Chinese tea, this book is useless . The book does not go into any detail about important elements of Chinese tea drinking such as Yixing teapots and the gongfu brewing method; it just tries to explain them in a few sentences. After reading this book, you will hardly have gained any knowledge of Chinese tea at all.
The book is obviously an imitation of John Blofeld's "The Chinese Art of Tea", which is an excellent book on the subject of Chinese tea. This book even copied the format of "The Chinese Art of Tea" by inserting small drawings in the margins, and they also copied the teahouse section of "The Chinese Art of Tea". The only thing they forgot to copy was all the good information.

The section in this book on tea brewing, entitled "How to Make a Nice Cup of Tea", provides instructions on making tea that could only be used to make tea for your dogs. The book does not explain any of the Chinese brewing methods, it seems like the authors just read the back of a Lipton box and copied into their book. If you are interested in Chinese tea, it is much better to find a few good websites on Chinese tea than to buy this book. Anybody who has even a small amount of knowledge of Chinese tea can see that this book is very badly made.

Disappointing... 2 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

After purchasing my Nespresso machine I enjoyed churning out Gingerbread lattes from an online recipe. My daughter requested a turtle latte and I decided a few fun espresso recipes would be great!

So I went in search of the perfect coffee drinks book. Sadly, this was not it. This was very disappointing. The espresso section was a few brief pages AND did not really include any speciality recipes.

Not a good choice for good coffee drinks.

A history / cultural lesson 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

If you want to know all about the culture and art of coffee making then buy this book. If you want a bit of help to impress your friends than this is not the book.

Pretty disappointed in this book. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There is only one recipe for espresso drinks. There are other recipes for drinks with brewed coffee, but they have ingredients that most people do not normally keep in their house. The sections on the history of coffee and some tips on how to make a better coffee/espresso, are pretty good. If you are looking for some recipes for some different drinks, this is definately not the book you are wanting. I'm going to keep the book only because I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it, but I will not be recommending it to anyone to buy.

Editorial Review:

Mathew Tekulsky chronicles the history of coffee drinking, surveys the types of beans and blends available, reviews coffee-making accessories and their uses, and dispenses tips for brewing a perfect cup of smooth, flavorful coffee. An appendix lists sources for gourmet coffee beans and flavorings and coffee-making equipment. 10 line drawings.

Editorial Review:

In Iced Tea, author Fred Thompson serves up 50 vibrant variations on "the house wine of the South," using black, green, and oolong teas ("considered by some to be the Lafite Rothschild of teas") as well as tisanes, which are teas made not from tea leaves but from flowers, herbs, and spices. Recipes range from Southern-Style Iced Tea--a basic formula of tea, water, and sugar--to Teatotaler's Sangria, which combines chilled green tea with peaches, oranges, and other fresh fruits. Other notable concoctions include the tropically tinged Bimini Island Iced Tea; Cha Yen, or Thai Iced Tea, which uses condensed and evaporated milk; and the classic Sweet Tea, whose main ingredient is sugar--and lots of it. ("A visitor to the South once said that it made his teeth hurt," writes the author.) There's also a section of mixed alcoholic drinks.

"Tea is the world's second most popular beverage, after water," says Thompson, and it has noted health benefits; its consumption has been linked to lower instances of cancer and strokes. Iced Tea should help readers pursue good health--and have a delicious time doing it. --Andy Boynton

Wonderful treats! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a gorgeous little book that could serve quite well as a gift. The photos are eye-catching, delectable, and frequent. The recipe layout is clean, simple, and easy to read. Directions are easy to follow, and there are no unnecessarily complex recipes in here.

The book starts off with a modest amount of information aimed at helping you to produce a wonderful cup of coffee. (This is largely information such as different brewing methods, a few notes on different roasts, and a page of tips and hints.) This is followed by 'recipes' for the basic coffee drinks that everyone loves. However, the book swiftly moves on to the recipes you won't find in every other book; this seems to me to be a very good compromise.

'Coffee' includes recipes for new and different coffee drinks (one of my favorites is a coffee-based ice cream soda), tidbits to enjoy with your coffee (such as a fantastic pastry to dip in your coffee that's easily assembled from a sheet of puff pastry and some crystallized ginger), and coffee-flavored treats. We made an ice cream recipe from this book that was out of this world. If you're feeling adventurous you could make a coffee-flavored cake with coffee-toffee icing, or you could keep things simple (yet impressive) with java jolt truffles or coffee caramels. Every recipe we tried came out beautifully, and the directions were detailed and easy to follow.

Editorial Review:

Every day, millions search for The Perfect Cup of Coffee in caf s, diners, and kitchens around the world. Here, coffee guru Betty Rosbottom offers easy-to-follow recipes guaranteed to please anyone who takes delight in sampling, sipping, and serving exquisite coffee concoctions. Mornings are brighter with a hot Caf au Lait, and a homemade Cappuccino takes the frost right out of a cold day. A chic Caff Macchiato is sure to spice up the night, and for something sweet, an Old-Fashioned Coffee Soda topped with whipped cream should do the trick. Aromatic, delicious and addictive nothing satisfies like a good old cup o' Joe.
