a beautiful book on tea parties 4 out of 5 stars.
53 of 53 people found this review helpful.

This book starts with 4 pages of tea history and brewing instructions and then has 3 pages of "how to's" for tea parties. There is a theme tea for every month with menus and suggestions. There are approximately 4 recipes included with each month, so having another tea-time cookbook is advisable. Two of my favorites are "The Book of Afternoon Tea" by Lesley Mackley and "Totally Teatime Cookbook" by Helene Siegel.

As far as "how to's" for tea parties, "Tea with Friends" by Elizabeth Knight has more information, but fewer recipes. Even so, this makes a beautiful gift book.

Let's have a tea party! 5 out of 5 stars.

A little something for everyone! 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Time for Tea offers a delightfully unique expression of why English society has so steadfastly preserved its teatime tradition. Thirteen English women, ranging in age from six to eighty, share their very candid and entertaining reflections on why the teatime ritual -- in all its incarnations -- is such an indelible fixture in their lives.

From Virginia, Lady Bath, to Winifred Westcott, a dairy farmer, from Anne Slade, a retired ballerina, to schoolgirl Hayley Richards, a farmer's daughter, we are treated to the surprisingly moving and engaging medley of these women's memories and dreams, as they discuss their own teatime traditions and their lives with us -- over a cup of tea.

The women also share their family teatime recipes for delicious cakes, scones, crumpets and jams, and suggest an appropriate tea to accompany them. Along the way, we explore the secrets of an English specialty tea shop, see the inside of a tea blender, learn how to brew a perfect pot of tea and how to make an authentic cream tea.

The women's stories are beautifully framed by spectacular photographs of the breathtaking English countryside, which perfectly complements the peace and serenity of a good English tea.

Chai, The Spice Tea of India 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

After living in India for 12 years (1971-1983) this delightful book brought back so many wonderful memories that were so strong you could almost taste them. Diana Rosen has done an excellent job of blending the romantic culture with the traditions of making and serving tea that transcends all classes and castes of the India subcontinent. After reading 'Chai' I have order six more copies as gifts for my close friends. Everyone who enjoys a cup of tea, and what it can bring, will love this tasty and instructive book.

Good Book 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a fine book for any tea lover. My only quibble is with the recipes using a 14 ounce can of unsweetened condensed milk. The only milk that comes in that size is the Eagle Brand type which IS sweetened. I made the recipes with the sweetened milk and they taste fine. I think it is a typo, but I may be wrong.

Editorial Review:

This flavorful combination of black tea and rich spices is now the up-and-coming

beverage trend. Rosen uncovers its history along with recipes for making and cooking with chai and serving suggestions for tea celebrations. Readers will find variations like herbal chai, iced chai, and chai cappuccino, plus recipes for masala cake, cardamom cookies, and chai scones.

Tea has been a beverage enjoyed through the centuries, and has had much attributed to it in culture. "The Spirit of Tea" is a look at the mystical nature of the six categories of tea and how humanity has treated them throughout history. Offering new ideas about each of them and their value to spirituality, "The Spirit of Tea" should be considered by anyone who takes their tea with curiosity.

A good value for the price, but I liked other books better 4 out of 5 stars.
62 of 64 people found this review helpful.

This book contains 4 suggested menus, 7 pages of history and customs, and 5 pages of quotes about tea.

teas & beverages: 11 recipes / breads & spreads: 16 recipes / light servings: 13 recipes / sweets: 11 recipes

The recipes are easy, some as simple as "Marinate fresh mushrooms in Italian dressing" if you don't have time to make their marinade.

It's an attractive book with delicate watercolors on every page. If you only want one book of tea-type recipes, I prefer "The Book of Afternoon Tea" by Lesley Mackley or "Totally Teatime Cookbook" by Helene Siegel.

Treasure to keep or give! 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 37 people found this review helpful.

This is a great little book... It includes the history ofteas, the tea ceremony and all of the related customs.

All of thepages in the book are watercolors done by one of the three collaborators, almost each page is different and just beautiful to look at.

After looking at the pretty pages you are encouraged to plan your own special "TEA" event. Included are four suggested menus; Winter Holiday Tea, Summer Tea, Formal Tea and Informal Tea. Each menu is complete and lists five to eight items. All of the recipes are included, even the obvious simple basic ones that most of us already know about. The recipes are simple and elegant, all seem fabulous and easy to make with ingredients most of us already have in our pantries.

The book is a collaboration of three women who are lifelong friends. One watercolors and hand letters the calligraphy, another is responsible for the watercolor vignettes and the third is the writer.

Editorial Review:

Because many are rediscovering afternoon tea as a wonderful tradition to share with family and friends, this lovely full-color guide offers an introduction to the practice, providing the essentials of tea service.

Worth every penny! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I had slight sticker shock and hesitated to buy this book. In fact, when it arrived, I was a bit unhappy with the small size. Having perused this small tome (with a cuppa in hand, of course), I've come to realize that my reservations were in vain. What a great book for the tea lover! This guide is not only informative, but well written. I'll be reading it again and again, and I'm sure that many a happy afternoon will be spent in the City (and here in Brooklyn, too) thanks to Ms. Knight. The only downside is that the fifth NYC borough is not mentioned... sounds like a great opportunity for someone in Staten Island to rise to the occasion for a possible (and hoped for by this reader) 2008 edition.

Editorial Review:

Two of America’s leading tea writers have combined their talents to introduce you to all things tea in The Big Apple. Elizabeth Knight, tea sommelier at the grand St. Regis Hotel, leads you across Manhattan and it’s boroughs to experience over 100 tea rooms, tea salons, tea shops, tea bars, hotel teas, museum teas, tea cafes and restaurants that serve exceptional tea. Over 130 color photographs by Bruce Richardson and lots of neighborhood maps aid you in experiencing the city with tea on your mind.

I have had the privilege of dining at the Elmwood Inn and meeting the authors of this book. I have personally made most of these recipes and they are absolutely wonderful. Will make your tea party forever memorable.

a charming surprise 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Too often tea books rely on beautiful pictures for content, without coming through on quality recipes.

The Tea Table was a charming surprise - while the photography is indeed lovely, it is only a small part of the book. The bulk of the book is made up of unique and interesting recipes. In particular, the savories/sandwiches section is excellent - a large variety made of easily found ingredients. I look forward to presenting these at my next tea party.

Editorial Review:

Kentucky's historic Elmwood Inn won international attention as one of America's best-loved tea rooms when it was recognized by the British Guild of Tea Shops in 2002. Shelley and Bruce Richardson, authors of "A Year of Teas at the Elmwood Inn" and "A Tea for All Seasons," have now created their third volume of beautiful tea recipes guaranteed to inspire readers longing to set their own fabulous tea tables.

This collection contains 70 new recipes and is illustrated with 85 color photographs.

A nice coffee (tea?) table book. 4 out of 5 stars.
24 of 26 people found this review helpful.

The New Tea Book is a nice, light read for those who want to learn a little more about tea. It's not the definitive treatise on the subject, but it's great to just pick up and flip through.

There are a number of subjects covered, mainly breaking down into information about the history and production of tea; varieties and types of tea; preparation and serving information; and a few recipes.

It's not the densest book around. If you're knowledgeable about the subject, you know everything that's contained in here already. True tea snobs will find a thing or two to turn their nose up at.

The recipes are interesting, and while I haven't had a chance to try any yet, they may be one of the best reasons to buy the book (snob or no). There are recipes for desserts, beverages, and a few sandwiches. Some of this stuff looks real good and pretty easy to pull off.

The photography is top-notch, and in some cases almost justifies the purchase of the price. But just be ready for light reading that you can flip through as opposed to deep, informative writing.

Editorial Review:

Tea is hot and getting hotter. In the New Tea Book, no leaf is left unturned. Discover the wide variety of teas that are available and their myriad health benefits, as well as over 50 recipes for cooking with tea: beverages, savories, and delectable sweets. This strikingly photographed volume takes readers on a visual journey exploring the riches of black, green, oolong, and herbal teas, from the fragrant, full-bodied Assam to the spirited and spicy Yunnan. An exciting addition is the completely new Personal Spa section, introducing a host of aromatherapy touches for the home with recipes for tea bath sachets, eye pillows, beauty soaps, and potpourris. Finally, a list of resources gives information on where to find interesting tea blends and equipment, not to mention author Sara Perry's favorite international teahouses. Here's just the right cup o' tea.
