Delicious! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Whether you're looking for a delicious coffee or chocolate drink, a variation on the usual teas, a spiced punch, or some creative uses for spirits, you'll find something in here to serve at your holiday parties. Every drink we tried from this book was wholly delicious, such as Winter Twilight, which includes pomegranate juice and Chambord. I wouldn't particularly recommend this book for folks who don't like alcohol, however, as many of the recipes, even those found outside of the obviously spirit-based chapter ("merry-making cocktails") include a fair amount of alcohol.

Other chapters include chocolates and coffees, teas tonics and tisanes, welcome cups and party punches, and winter warmers and sweet dreamers. Thankfully since this isn't a huge book it doesn't spend much space on tried-and-true recipes; instead it dives straight into some nifty and unusual temptations. One of my favorites was 'tres leches'---a concoction that includes banana, orange juice, the traditional three types of milk referred to in the title, and several other surprising ingredients. I was slightly dubious at the combination, but it was amazing! Another fantastic drink, called 'toasted caramel,' involves the sublime dulche de leche, as well as the wonderful combination of Frangelico and Amaretto.

The table of contents lists each drink by name, and the index allows you to search for drinks by ingredient. The book is small and attractive, definitely a contender if you're looking for a delicious little gift cookbook for someone. The photos are beautiful, the layout is clean and easy to use, and the recipes seem well-tested.

Editorial Review:

Nothing warms up frigid fingers and toes like a mug of spicy mulled cider or creamy hot chocolate. HOT DRINKS presents 50 recipes for mixed coffees, teas, punches, cocoas, ciders, and cocktails perfectly suited for cozying up by the fire or heating up holiday family get-togethers. Featuring the classics (Hot Buttered Rum, Hot Toddies) as well as new twists on old favorites (Candy Cane Mojito, Sassy Hot Root Beer Float, Snowflake Vanilla White Chocolate), this collection of cold-weather warmers is sure to chase away the winter chills.

An Excellent Comprehensive Reference 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Ironically enough, I actually was a complete idiot about coffee before I read this book. But I had a burgeoning interest in the subject and I can now say that I'm quite well-versed in it. I was amazed at the complexity involved in getting coffee from the plant to your cup, and this guide does a great job of laying it all out, step by step. It also provides all the necessary tips required for successful home roasting, grinding and brewing. The sections on tea are also very informative and may well introduce you to a world you never knew existed. If you're looking for a detailed reference on the wide world of these brewed beverages, look no further. This book has everything you need and then some.

This is a nice general book about green tea with some history, recipes and medical benefits of consuming it.

This book is not long-winded, but cover quite a lot of information.

A real jewel of a book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this book too, and one major reason, is that it kind of goes back to the golden age of paperback books, when you could buy little paperback books on every kind of topic imaginable. Combine this with the fitness boom of the '70s and '80s when one could find books on such topics as yoga or running with relative availability, this book fits very much into that mode...and I like a good author and the author is very enthusiastic with her subject. Sure, there are good books nowadays with slick or rice paper and fantastic graphics but this book is surely topnotch reading and magnificent in it's simplicity.

Editorial Review:

In this completely accessible and understandable guide, readers learn how green tea acts as a stronger antioxidant than vitamin C or E and inhibits blood clots as effectively as aspirin. They discover how its wonderful health-giving properties guard against cancer, protect against heart disease, slow the aging process, and even help reduce weight, safely and effectively.

Caffeine Clout 2 out of 5 stars.
29 of 92 people found this review helpful.

I liked this book because it makes a good showing on my shelf. People at my house say "Akmed, you are a coffee chemist?" I say, "yes, everything coffee does for me this book can undo. Ever drank too much coffee and can't sleep? This book solves that problem! Sleep for days after reading this book! I did. And you can too." One of my friends borrowed the book just before she quit coffee and died of severe depression. I'm not saying she read the book, but carrying it around seem to have the same effect. I hope everyone with too much time and energy will read this book, as they too will suffer a lingering malaise.

Disappointing! 2 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

We are getting ready to open the tea room in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and I assumed this book would be helpfull but its was not. Lots of recipes were not accurate, missing steps and ingridients, the photos are nice, but they do not match the recipes. Very disappointing!

The author does a nice job of introducing us to some of the pretty places in Britain. The descriptions are good and the pictures pretty. I would like to see the complete menu in order to plan my visits. The complete address and phone number would be helpful. The book is a lovely one to inspire you.

Editorial Review:

In a skinny-no-whip-mocha-latte world, The Tea Drinker's Handbook is a refreshing return to America's roots in tea-drinking. Though tea is one of the most-consumed beverages in the world, second only to water, it is far from mundane. For both the lifelong tea drinker and the recent convert, The Tea Drinker's Handbook is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in all things tea. The founders of Le Palais des Thés, a retail chain known for the high quality of its selection of teas, have traveled for over twenty years to plantations all over the world in search of the rarest teas, and the result is this handsome and enlightening book. This is the first guide written under the Le Palais des Thés brand. In addition to ten shops in France, there are stores in Brussels, Oslo, Tokyo, and Beverly Hills, and their products are sold at Bergdorf Goodman. In this impressive and comprehensive guide, we rediscover tea, its cultivation, and all of its richness and complexity. In addition to being an informative resource, this book is also a true tasting guide for tea lovers. The authors open our eyes (and introduce our palates) to tea-tasting, as they list the top fifty teas of the world--complete with tasting sheets--and include comments and advice for each. And with 200 illustrations, The Tea Drinker's Handbook informs and instructs with both fascinating text and alluring images.

This man, though not Chinese, truly knows his subject and loves it. It shows all through the book. its a masterpiece! a simply MUST HAVE for all admirers of tea or the Chinese culture/ppl/way. Perhaps in a way it is fitting that the author is not Chinese. It shows that even a barbarian [foreigner] can learn something so different when he has enough love and time and determination.
