Editorial Review:

Unquestionably unique, demonstrably delightful, Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine is the culmination of one of the most extraordinary careers in the world of wine. Michael Broadbent quite possibly knows more about fine, old wines than anyone else alive, and he writes about them with unparalleled expertise.
Hired by Christie's in 1966 to revive their wine auctions, Broadbent threw himself into his work, searching out great collections of the world's finest wine--and keeping meticulous tasting notes. Here are evocations of Chateau d'Yquem from 1784--one of Thomas Jefferson's favorites--and hundreds of vintages and thousands of wines right up to the present.
Years of "cellars visited and pillaged, involving the checking and packing of dust- and grime-laden bottles in distinctly dank and chilly conditions," jet-set auctions around the world, legendary tastings and society events, have all helped to create an unrivalled store of vinous anecdotes as well as an unsurpassed wine-tasting history.

EXCERPT

From a tasting of 1784 Chateau Yquem:
"The most renowned vintage of the late 18th century and well-documented thanks mainly to the original copies of the letters and orders of Thomas Jefferson. . . . Jefferson did not trust wine merchants and insisted on bottling at the chateau. . . . The wine has a warm mahogany-amber colour with a pronounced yellow-green rim. Initially, the nose, unsurprisingly, was creakingly old but after fifteen minutes settled down to reveal a remarkably rich, tangy, honeyed scent."

Editorial Review:

First published in 1997, Concepts in Wine Chemistry was the first text and reference book in decades to set out the basic science behind the chemistry of wine. Now, this new edition is fully revised and undated to meet the field's most recent developments and explain the chemistry backbone to the broader science of winemaking. The chapters are logically organised from the must and juice composition through each step of the winemaking process: fermentation, phenolics, oxidation, oak products, sulphur dioxide, cellar process and wine defects. Also included is a chapter on the history of wine chemistry and ancient winemaking practices, and a thorough index and chapter outlines.

Très bien! 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Several options using 3 or 4 basic folds.... 4 out of 5 stars.

The book gives relatively clear instructions and has corresponding drawings to help diagram. Makes for a great basics type of book. I had hoped for a few folding techniques that were more dramatic...it is still a fine book with many different folds.

Editorial Review:

Turn a good meal into a gala occasion and delight your guests with the festive touch of an ingeniously folded napkin. This rich selection is illustrated in clear, step-by-step drawings accompanied by easy-to-follow directions. Introduction. 22 napkin folds. 22 black-and-white photographs plus 11 in color on covers. Several numbered diagrams for each fold.

Editorial Review:

This is a unique lifestyle book with wine as the centrepiece. A voice is needed to help women to understand that their busy professional and social lifestyles can be well paired with wine. Master Sommelier and successful television host, Alpana Singh happens to be just the person who can help them do it. Alpana Singh is uniquely qualified to talk about wine, contemporary women and relationships. At age 26, she became the youngest woman to be inducted into the world's most exclusive sommelier organisation, the 120 member Court of Master Sommeliers. She spent five years as sommelier at a world famous four star restaurant, Everest of Chicago. While there, she closely observed the sometimes humorous, sometimes absurd, social interactions between men and woman at all stages of their relationships. Her mental journal of these 'social observations' came in handy as she wrote her first book, "Alpana Pours". The book reaches readers in playful language they will understand, and in a highly entertaining manner they will enjoy. Women want to know how to select wine when entertaining important clients, pair wine with food they and their partner are preparing together, choose the right wines for hostess gifts, bridal showers, a first meeting with a boyfriend's parents and what wine to, or not to, order on a first date. "Alpana Pours" supplies tips on these and a myriad of other topics including 'dating' and 'dealing with guys'. The book's take on wine and lifestyle is unique and will definitely grab reader's attention.

Editorial Review:

Choosing a bottle of wine should be fun, not frightening. After all, one of the most important elements of enjoying wine is not so much the vintage or the vineyard but the occasion on which it is enjoyed.

In their new book, Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion, Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, authors of the popular weekly "Tastings" column in the Wall Street Journal, give you the kind of honest, accessible wine information that is hard to find.

In Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion, Dottie and John, as they are known to their fans, answer the most frequently asked questions about what wine to drink on specific occasions. They cover all the bases: What wine should I put away for my newborn's twenty-first birthday? What wine is best with Thanksgiving turkey? They also suggest ways in which wine can make every day a little bit more of an occasion -- how to throw a wine tasting, how to start a wine-tasting group, even how to add wine to your tailgating party. And they share scores of tips from people like you.

Chapters include lists of specific wines and provide readers with suggestions for choosing Champagne to ring in the New Year and for chilled whites (and even reds) to drink in the summer. There is no stodginess about vintages and there are no numbered ratings. Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion gives you simple, straightforward advice to help you choose the best wines for life's best moments. As Dottie and John say, "The problem with most wine books is that they are about wine. Our book is about life."

So raise your glass to Wine for Every Day and Every Occasion. And drink to life.

Excellent source for beginners 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I checked this book out of the library, and liked it so much I had to get a copy for myself! I am organizing a wine tasting group, and my hope is to educate as well as learn along with everyone else. We range from novice to experience wine tasters in our group. This little guidebook is one that I will bring to every tasting as a quick reference for those who want to learn an overview.

My favorite section is "Assessing Wine," which touches on color, tasting do's and don'ts, smell, and wine flavors. I wish DK Publishing would put out a poster with this information on it! I guess I will have to let people flip through this book when I want to make a point.

As with all DK books I own, this book is graphically excellent and it uses photography to illustrate its text in a very effective way.

I think this a great book!

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

I am currently using this book at work. When I started reading it I knew nothing about wine. I am only half way into the book and feel that I know more then most people would about wine. It is an excellent source for anyone who would like to know more.
