Too lazy to update the book? 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The idea of that book is excellent: to list wines that are medal winners, and, even better, multiple medal winners! Plus some additional generally useful information about wines for novices. But, and here is "but", the authors did not update their past books (I have used some older editions when they were freshly published and they were excellent and very useful!) and this book is simply useless. The winners are from 2000, 2001 or 2002 and very few of newer ones, and by now they are all gone from normal wine stores! So, what is needed now, is a good update and a new publication, and I am sure it will be a bestseller!

Editorial Review:

Whether searching for a delicious $8 bottle of wine or a phenomenal $78 bottle, this antisnob's guide to buying and enjoying wine offers wine lovers a foolproof way to choose a great bottle each time they visit the wine shop. Every wine featured in this book earned a gold medal from one of the most competitive and prestigious wine competitions held around the world each year. Sized to fit into a purse or pocket, this resource is a perfect shopping companion, providing information on all types of wines, the regions they come from, food pairings, and fascinating wine trivia. This reference is accessible enough to help novices learn about wine and make good decisions, yet informative enough to please the aficionado.

Never Let Me Down 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is the 11th edition of this book that I've bought and I find it an indispensable tool. As an amateur wine-o-phile I take exeception to the widespread belief that I need to be marketed to by glossy spread magazines whose genuine interest lies more in pleasing their advertisers (Wine Connosieur, etc.). This pocket-sized guide is to wine as the original Field Guide to Birds of North America is to birding: all business, no ads, and without substitute.
Try this: buy the guide, determine the highest price you'll pay for a particular varietal, find the ones in each category that have a significant # of awards, then carry the book with you the next time you're in your favorite wine store. In 12 years I have NEVER been let down by my choices- the prices listed as a reference are often higher than what you'll find at your store, at least at the beginning of the season. Prosit!

Editorial Review:

This portable but thorough guide to California wine is based on the verdicts of professional judges in the state's nine largest and most respected independent wine competitions. The first half of the book highlights the most-awarded wines in all Varietal categories and includes their retail prices; the second features alphabetical lists by winery including each producer's medal winners as well as their addresses and website information. Dozens of helpful photos, charts, and tables are included, and an innovative cross-reference system makes this book a highly useful shopping or wine touring guide.

Great way to learn wines of all local types. 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I received this 11/98 version as a gift. I use it extensively as a reference for learning about different local varietals, and use it when purchasing, and then consuming, certain vintages. My one personal gripe is that I just cannot afford to try all the wines in recommendation. (Maybe that's a good thing!)

This is my wine bible. 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Actually it's more than that. It's like an encyclopedia, dictionary, atlas and buying guide all in one. I'm so happy to see a new addition of this book. There are so many new wines and wineries to know about that it makes my head spin. This book sorts it all out in a very concise and comprehensive format. Bravo!

Editorial Review:

In its newly updated, revised, and expanded fourth edition, America's favorite guide to the wines of California and the West Coast offers even more comprehensive and authoritative information. More than 700 wineries and labels are appraised (including 100 discussed for the first time), and the new edition features "exclusively" the latest word on all the wines of Oregon and Washington State. 7 maps.

Honest suggestions, good accompaniment 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I think this book deserves at least one review, so here I go...

When I purchased it, I hoped it would help me understand vast production and offering of quality wines in the world. Well, it did not. Without color pictures, maps and other fancy illustrations I was not as keen on proceeding. That maybe tells more about my reading habits then about the book. So I bought "The New Sotheby's Wine Encyclopedia instead" which is really inspiring and I am reading it enthusiastically and gaining knowledge. At this point I am founding Daniel Johnnes's book to be good resource to help me find wine values. With tasting notes on 200 wines, hot shot producers and honest suggestions, I don't have to spend hundreds of dollars on "grand vin" and still can enjoy top quality.

Editorial Review:

You don't have to be a wine expert to get a good deal on a great bottle. Without stuffy, technical terms-and without talking down to the inexperienced wine buyer-Daniel Johnnes lays out all the basics that the consumer needs to know before making his or her next purchase. This edition, newly updated for 2004, includes:
* Daniel Johnnes's opinion of 200 wines, including more than 80 wines of recent vintage added since the first edition
* Explanations of grape varieties and the wine-making process
* How to start a wine cellar for only $750
* Helpful hints on everything from uncorking the bottle to complementary dishes
Most important, Johnnes makes the distinction between cheap wines and wines of good value-if a wine is truly great, it may be worth paying a little more than you expected.

Editorial Review:

Distinctive cheeses, their sources and matchings.

When a cheese connoisseur and an authority on wine pair up, beautiful things can happen. This is certainly the case in The Definitive Canadian Wine and Cheese Cookbook. Gurth Pretty is the author of The Definitive Guide to Canadian Artisanal and Fine Cheese, and Tony Aspler is an international wine consultant and the author of numerous books on wine. Together, these authorities have produced the essential guide to Canadian cheese uses.

A sampling of the delicious recipes in The Definitive Canadian Wine and Cheese Cookbook:

  • Smoked salmon with herb and garlic chèvre panini
  • The lamb burger with a dragon's roar
  • Grilled whitefish with wasabi verdelait-coated soba noodles
  • Port cheddar tarte Tatin.

The Definitive Canadian Wine and Cheese Cookbook not only introduces the varied cheeses of Canada, but also matches many of them to locally produced wines. In addition to the 150 recipes, there is a glossary of cheese, a guide to buying and storing cheese, and a section on the principles of matching cheese and wine. This definitive book by Canada's cheese and wine experts is a must-have for cheese lovers everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Beginning with a round-up of the year, Andrew Jefford reveals the best places to buy wine in London, from wine merchants, through supermarkets and high street chains to mail order specialists and warehouses. With suggestions of recommended bottles, details of opening times, discounts, tastings and storage facilities, the mystery of wine is being removed. An exploration of the capital's wine bars makes up the next section of the guide, concentrating only on those places which stand out for quality of choice, amiability of surroundings and excellence of food. Information is given in order to make the reader's visit a pleasant one with wine recommendations, opening hours, number of wines available by the glass and half bottle, numbers of wines on the list and access by public transport. Finally, the author unveils the secrets of how to enjoy wine. With information on tasting, drinking, storing and even studying wine, he then goes on to look at the wines of the world: from such unknowns as Algeria and Slovakia, to the classics like France and Germany and newcomers like Chile and Australia. The book also discusses taste and style, the best vintage, whether a bottle can be stored or drunk straight away, what to avoid and what is recommended.
