vino, vino, and more vino 3 out of 5 stars.

As with many wine book serials, there are new additions, but for the most part, the text usually remains the same as in previous editions. If you are looking for a wine guide written by such wine critics as Clarke, Hugh Johnson, et al., it's important to ask yourself first which critic's opinions you agree with most before purchasing his book. Did you agree with Clarke's rating on a certain viognier? Or do you tend to agree with Johnson more? I have read thorugh Oz Clarke's guide, and it is informative and has a good primer if you're just starting out in wine appreciation. But be sure you agree with his opinions, otherwise his pick may not be quite as yummy to your taste buds. I have both Oz Clarke and Hugh Johnson's 1998 editions, and I found that having them both is useful when comparing their opinions on the same wines, but more importantly, in forming my own opinion.

Editorial Review:

The huge variety of wines now available in supermarkets and off-licences can be baffling even to those with some knowledge of wines. Varieties from all corners of the world compete for shelf-space, and within each region a profusion of grape varieties and blends produces a vast array of quite different drinks. In this revised edition, the presenter of BBC 2's "Food and Drink" series helps readers to break through the mysteries of wine lore, and aims to provide a region-by-region and grape-by-grape appreciation of the wines of the world.

What a Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

"Wine 101", how can you beat this title? It was a wonderful and informative book. I really liked the information about what wines went with various food categories. This book really helps when you take a date out to dinner and you know which wine to choose. I enjoy the light hearted, one-liners of Gerald Hammon.

Editorial Review:

Wine 101, practical information with a minimum of technical language. Won't go out of date the minute a new vintage hits the shelves. Written for the novice who wants enough information to purchase, serve and enjoy wine but who doesn't want to plow through endless descriptions of obscure vintages or wineries. Wine 101 is the first line of defense against wine snobs.

Wine Savvy is adequate, elegant 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I found Wine Savvy to be an adequate, elegant introduction to enjoying the pleasures of wine. Without knowing very much about wine, I was immediately carried along by the easy tone and crisp writing style of the guide. The author's suggestions are practical and useful. The book answers a lot of the kinds of questions Heidi's fans ask her when she does readings. What wine goes best with pizza, or different kinds of meat? What's the difference between wine that is corked, and wine that comes in a box? She offers tons of tips and hints, and not all of them concerning the beverage alone. When discussing wineglasses, for instance, she suggests that "it's better to drink inexpensive wine in a high quality wineglass, than to drink expensive wine using cheap glasses." For solid advice and a friendly, fun writing style, you can't beat this little wine primer from a veteran author and columnist.

Editorial Review:

You don't need a 1000-page encyclopedia to find out how to appreciate the flavors of wine, order wine in a restaurant or pick a wine to go with dinner. Wine Savvy is a toolbox of wine tasting, buying and serving skills that you can use whether you want to spend $5 or $50. In accessible language, with good humor, writer and wine educator Heidi Yorkshire demystifies wine in this book.

Wine Savvy was nominated for an IACP/Julia Child Cookbook Award. The book was translated into Japanese and published in Japan by YoYoSha.

Resonably complete and well organized 2 out of 5 stars.

With 2,500 wines reviewed, you'd think that the whole spectrum of California vintages would be covered...however, I found many of my favorite wines missing. Overall, its a good solid reference and worth the price.

Take the guesswork out of wine selection. 4 out of 5 stars.

If you don't know a Zinfandel from a Merlot, this is the book for you. The very first wine I selected using this guide was my best purchase to date. It's a must if you plan on touring the wineries of California. This simple to read and easy to understand book makes a pseudo-connoisseur out of a novice.

Editorial Review:

From the leading authority on wine comes a handy reference featuring up-to-date ratings of the newest vintages of red wines throughout the United States. A look at the numerical ratings and expert tasting notes will help you select the best of the new wines from California and Washington state all the way to New York. The book also includes maps and overviews of each wine-growing region, plus informative sidebars about the best-rated wines and wine values.
